Determining factors for impellors

18' jetboat possible 460-454 powerplant Berk pump. Now i know the cam comes into play when deciding on a operating rpm range for the impellor right? But what else determines the size of impellor to be used for your application, and whats the norm for these two different engines.

Was just curiuose if my SS A impellor will work, its used came out of another boat/pump and all. what do i look for as far as a damaged impellor ???

It looks good to me but i am new at this.

Is it true that it takes more HP to turn a SS compared to a aluminum?

OH ya i forgot to mention that the engine was a 454 that powered the boat i took the pump/impellor out of ;D

 Ran Across the Board- Just Dropped in to say hi to all. Looks like the Impeller Question has been outlined. I think a new version is comming for fuel and higher HP application by bigger size. I am getting more and more requests for this application all the time. We tested our new design at world finals only to have the test boat bust a rod 2-300 feet short. He still went thru at 128 MPH and was within hundreths of his fastest time ever. Our other test boat ran it in a stock application and found it to cut 2-300 Rs off each pre established MPH to Rs test point's the Mfg used as test basis. Its our New Cupped Impeller. We did build this and tool it several years ago, and gave two to Roger Wieman (Rogers Custom Boats) to test in 500 HP Units. None of the test boats ever returned them to us as they worked so well. I have made application for patient on this and several other Designs for the near future. I know some have seen these and we are testing in 3 through 6 vane with both the Aggressor standard exit port size (which is larger then others) and in a new 1/4" larger exit port size. We hope to be able to fill the new 11 Vane Bowl which requires 54 more CFM then our 9 Vane Bowl. Anyway we are working to get both our current and future products going forward as the industry has been stuck in the same O same O. Dave 888-246-5075 toll free

I've got an aluminum "A" impeller sitting here doing nothing if you are interested.  O replaced it with a new "A" since I was going through my pump and just for kicks went all new.   Greg

Is the impeller you sent me last year the same as the one mentioned in your post? I'm just wondering.

BTW, so far it's worked out great. With the new impeller and the inducer installed, the boat gets a real nice bite out of the hole now!

The Impeller you have is from the newest tooling. Its the same as most of the big guys are running and the same version Frank Nagore ran this past year. Franks is Mag. also, and pulled some very impressive numbers in ET. Like 7.04 What the new Impeller is old to us, in that we tested it 5-6 Years ago just before we lost most all our tooling. We redesigned it into 2 diff. exit port structures and put the blade rap on different angles. We know it works its just can we improve it further and get even a higher water volumn out by another 54 CFM. The one you have is a increase of around 52 CFM over anyone else and has been that way for several years now. We have LOL at the interpretations and copy effects in a attempt to copy this Impeller.  What you must do to copy,  Is start with the tooling core procedure. if you try to make it the conventional way the core box cannot be pulled, so what they get is a cone and wrap that is quite a bit different yet quicker to produce and less detail time required. We have a couple more tests and then will make a decision on exit port. We know in the pre-tested our cupped works well for the stock application to 500-600 HP its the 1,400 to 2,000 HP now we want to know about. Then will it supply the 11 Vane Bowl the added 54 CFM it wants. Remember our 9 Vane is 52 CFM (non Cavatational) above all others and we just completed up-dating it to withstand higher pressures and force. The same is planned for the 11 Vane. Anyway thats enough about what can be untill we demonstrate it in a monster way at a Drag Race in public its all marketing BS till then.

i've not seen a test that proved it took more hp to turn a heavier stainless impeller than it does to turn a lighter aluminum one.

if it were me, i'd keep the stainless impeller because it will be suitable for whatever power is added later on. no good reason not to run it.

SS does take additional power to turn. I hate to be the one pointing this out... But your own post is a contradiction in itself... Don't see why it would take more power to turn a heavier material?

Think about it. A diesel engine --which typically has a much heavier rotating mass than a standard gas engine of similar size-- needs a much higher torque starter to get it turning... Additional battery amperage is also needed. Based solely on that logic, would you not agree that more power is necessary to turn the heavier rotating mass of the SS impeller? If this wasn't true, why would the companies making impellers, or for that matter, propellers constantly strive to make their product lighter but still maintain tensile strength?


However, you are right in one sense. Paying additional greenbacks to regress to an aluminum impeller would seem somewhat ridiculous.
Stick with the SS, use the money you would spend buying an aluminum impeller to make at least another 50 HP out of your Big Block...

you're right. i was thinking in terms of only wide open throttle. i dont think a stainless impeller, which is heavier than an aluminum one, reduces peak operating rpm of a jet boat engine. the weight difference is negligable and since the engine accelerates so quickly in a jet boat, i dont think the weight really matters. The engine will go from idle to WOT and park itself at a specific rpm that's dictated by the cut of the impeller and not its reciprocating weight.

so yes, you're right it does take more power to turn but i doubt it takes enough to even matter to most people.
