 I took out my boat today and to me it seemed to run hotter and just didn't seem to have the power it did last year. I have a berk. 12j pump and a olds. 425. I was thinking that the pump wasn't pushing the amount of water it needs to the motor to cool it. I have a diverter valve to control the amont of water to the motor and it was all the way open. Last year the temp was 185  +/- 5-8degree constant. Today I it wouldn't go under 205, 215 was the highest before i shut it down. It has fresh oil and the presure was good, I had no water in the oil, no water leaks or oil leaks, the boat is a 18' hornet made by jet boat services( thats what the pink slip says) and it took longer to plain. speed was hard to judge because it didn't run it too hard but it seemed to be just a resonsive as it was. Pump was rebuilt about 5 years ago and has maybe 50hrs on it. Any suggs.?

I'd suggest you troubleshoot by checking that cooling water is getting past the control valve and is actually making it into your engine block. You need to be careful where and how you do this. Remember that taking off any of the cooling lines has the potential to let a lot of water into the boat and eventually sink it.

Probably best to do this with the boat on the trailer but jet in the water.

If there IS plenty of water getting to the block, then hook that line(s) back up and then confirm that the water is coming OUT of the block.

If you have low/no water getting to the block then you have something blocking between the engine and the pump. If you have water to the block but not coming out, then you have something inside the motor. Either condition will keep cold water from cooling off your motor.

Look into the pump first, it seems there are some common denominators for the pump having an issue....

That being said, you can run the garden hose back through the pump to make sure there are no immediate blockages...

It almost sounds as though the block is full of sand or something..maybe pull a plug on the block and find out if its clear...

My 1st thought was the sand in the block, maybe hardened up while sitting.  If you have plenty of water coming out the back and it feels hot after then engine warms then flow shouldn't be an issue.  Maybe your carb gummed up and is running lean... I think that causes the motor to run hotter, might check the spark plugs???  If the jet pump is binding this could cause the engine to have to work harder to turn over...   Just brainstorming ???

Just read this all again.......last year your water temp was 185*????  My water temp may get up to that'ish at idle(for a while) but... at throttle she should flow like a mofo.

Sand and dirt have a way of following gravity, to my thinking, you could have the block sorta plugged up on the lower side with sand and grit. Would not necessarily affect flow through the o/b dump. What you're gonna have in that situation is less water spending less time absorbing heat in the engine, and maybe not in the right places. Think physics.

The engine is still producing the same amount of heat, no matter what, but because maybe sand or whatever has settled in the bottom of the water passages, also heating up with the block, that same heat is being applied to a subsantially less volume of water. Temp goes up. I'd be worried, because water temp is just an indicator that something is wrong, meaning if something like this is happening, something else in the engine is getter FAR hotter than it should.

I'd do the hose thing, while on the trailer, just to make sure there's flow and not a simple problem. Then yeah, as Glenn said, pop  out a plug or two and see what comes out or what it looks like in there (I'd do the rearmost ones, the hardest ones to get to). A byatch, yes, but much cheaper than a new engine.

I'd also probably at home hook a hose to the outlet side (Vise grip the header hose), unhook the inlet side and sorta backflush it to see what comes out.

Just another .02 observation.

For future reference, I dunno if everyone, or anyone, does this, but I do. I pull the block drain plugs out right after I trailer the boat(s) home (hafta pull the starter on the bitch side). I don't use pet cocks, just thread tape the plugs again and put them back in. Petcocks will act as a sort of filter, but maybe I'm being anal about it, then I'll run the hose hookup through the motor with them uncorked for a few minutes. Just me.

I read somewhere the other day that more rust will accure with the block drained than with it full of water...I dunno. I pull my plugs once inna while to drain the poo poo.

OK, today I pulled the hoses off of the threm. housing and the hoses off the plate were the water pump would be and flushed out the block. equal amounts of water on both side and wasn't restricted, back flushed the pump and lookked for anything comeing out and every thing seemed to be fine,put a new deverter valve on the water input  to the motor, changed the oil and filters,cleaned out cheak ball at the tee to the headers( made sure it was working) and i'm going to take a IR temp gauge and go give it a try, The launch is only 10 mins away so I should know prety quick. and am going to put a mech. temp gauge to check that to. Thanks for all your guys' help

After I rebuilt my WJ it was shoving water in the motor so fast that I was getting water out of the headers at idle. So I'm going to have to say the pump condition can be held on water pressure to a degree. You never said what the over board dump was doing is it flowing normally or leaking out? Another thing to check that you really cant check when running at speed is the hose from the valve to the inlet side of the motor. I blew this hose twice the only way i found out was water temp going up and no water out of the exhaust. I now have a hose on there that super man him self could not break.

Are you running a thermostat at all?

Although Jet inlet line restrictions , obstructions and plumbing "issues" can cause overheating and running hot (near 200*) , several times a season we get boats or pumps in with complaints of poor performance and "Oh BTW it also runs hot" Jets without T sat setuops will barely get off the cold peg as a rule running around 100* to 140* depending on ambient temps and lake temps  (even when retricted at a jet mounted gate valve).  "running hot" especially at low RPM could be a harbinger of pump issues developing  These are all easy to check and I'm around and happy to help Tom

BTW one of the simplest ways to test this is to run on the garden hose with the hose water going directly into the engine at the disconnected jet line for a short time (in a "safe" mode of course) if your temp is low and "normal" this will tell a lot
