Title: Wear ring non existant?
Post by: steves86ta on February 19, 2015, 09:20:56 AM
I was pulling my JC pump apart, and noticed that it didnt have a wear ring in the suction housing? The guy i bought it from did have it in a running day cruiser. But a very low power unit.

Obviously im going to replace the trashed impeller and wear ring. But am i looking at this right? There is no wear ring? Or does it look seized to the impeller to you?

impeller, it looks like it might be stuck to it

Chuck it up on a lathe and cut the wear ring off, could save you a couple bucks

If the wear ring seized to the impeller there's a good chance it "self clearanced" and wallowed out the jet housing.  I'm a total newb to jets but see this type of situation on cars/engines all the time.

If the ring is supposed to be a press fit (pretty sure it is?) a standard OD ring probably wont work anymore.  The hole may not even be perfectly round anymore.  Maybe someone with jet experience can chime in but it seems to me either the housing may be junk (toss it) or needs to be machined for an over-sized ring if such a thing exists.

I know that's a lot of ifs and maybes from a guy who hasn't done it.  Trying to offer food for thought and things to investigate before you buy new parts.

Hi Chad,

Thanks for the info, but i think ill be okay. In jets, there seems to typically be a rubber insulator between the wear ring and the housing.

I think i might be okay

How does the housing bore look?   You might use an Ultimate wear ring from HTP...order it for an undersized impeller, after you install the wear ring, measure the bore at a few locations to make sure it's round, then machine the old impeller for the correct clearance.  If this isn't a race pump, it's all salvageable.
