« on: January 04, 2019, 03:34:45 PM »
Newbie,  sorry if i have posted in wrong place... My first post/cherry popped ect.. . Ive lurked and read almost every post for months. Butt.. Figured id just join and ask.. I will not be building my own pump- itll be ss but should i shoot for 9.5 and hope to pull 4700 or b/c and hope for 6500
Eliminator, bubble, 18'full stringer, no floor..530 bbf engine was tested exactly like it will be in boat..engine guy thought it was for prop boat :banghead:.should i have cam changed to shoot for max tq/lower rpm ..solid roller now
carb was only 750,  if cam change ill take dom carb off other boat and test.
Didnt want to call a pro shop yet and get stuck with salesman- not a tech ect
Whew that took me forever to type,  thanks

Any chance you can dyno with a bigger carburetor? The 750 is stupid short. You are deep into 950HP territory.

With the numbers you currently have, I would go with a stainless A and keep the RPMS down in the 5,300 RPM range, but I feel there is more left in that deal with more air. It is very difficult to over carburate a jet boat engine...

JMHO, if stuck with an as is, I would run an A, you simply don't have the torque numbers to pull a 9.5"

Welcome to SCJB. Do you have pics of your boat? Bummer about the build mix-up.
By no means am I an expert, but I agree with GT. You should benefit quite a bit from more carb.
Also, What kind of intake manifold are you running?

When i have them dyno with bigger carb, wonder if it would be worth changing cam to 106lsa or 108 to bring peek down, my other 514 peaks at 5500 but cant find that cam card.
Im keeping this boat,  selling southwind some day. Id like to push this one as hard as i can. Limits to delta bottom speed?has port matched victor. ..took me awhile to figure out how to reply.. Lol ...waiting to sell the existing 460 with 5hrs on it before pulling for new

You could swap the cam, but to what end? Your carburetor likely starved the engine for air at about the 5,000 rpm mark. A carburetor is rated at .5" vacuum at the plate. You are shooting for much closer to atmospheric pressure.

In all honesty, the member you need to message is Joe (flusher). He could probably get you headed down a logical path that will be both fiscally and mechanically sound...

Well... My dream was to run 90..i know Ive probably lost my mind.. Thats what i hear for other half anyway.. Im beginning to realize its not gonna happen with this motor.. Ugh
I like the old school v8 sound/ trying to stay away from buying a weed wacker.
Ill have to search for someone running same boat/bottom and start over i guess.. Know anyone running 85-90 with one... Thanks

90 isn't at all unrealistic. It did however depend on how far you want to run 90.

Touching 90mph and driving for miles at 90mph are two different animals.

My Renegade ran 85mph for a long as you had your foot in the gas, but was a bit sketchy to drive when compared to the aluminum tunnel hull or our deep V cruiser.

If you just want to run it for a half a mile, I think your platform is a good one.

If you look at your dyno sheet you can see where your carburetor held you back.

Put it into a graph and it will be obvious.

The horsepower curve tapers off.

Now that ya said it, i can see it in the numbers.    :banghead:   my guess its down 50-70hp possibly
That right there makes me glad i signed up...And saved me $$$$
Id like to be able to run 85-90 for short spurts ect...  Thats why i thought big impeller,  and bring rpm down,  but then cam change,  never ending circle. Lol

I got a laugh out of your "Weed Wacker" comment. I would assume you are referring to an OB? I haven't lake tested my new set up yet as it's still not finished. My old now sold 460 made over 600 hp on the dyno. (with two qts of Torco booster @ $22.00 per qt) With an "A" impeller did an indicated 75 on GPS at 5200rpm.

My new pump gas friendly 460 9.5 compression, forged internals, solid roller cam made 472.6 @ 5400 and 553.3 lb. ft. @ 4000 rpm with an air gap manifold and 850 double pumper. It will likely not go faster, as the rebuilt pump has a new "A" impeller; Couple hundred more rpm.
