Without a shoe, it can be beneficial to run a more aggressive loader that has ramps with leading edges below keel.
Adding a shoe and a loader both increase drag. Typically a ride plate is added along with a shoe. A ride plate generates lift which reduces wetted surface area on the hull, reducing drag. Loading vs. drag is a balancing act. For optimal results, testing & tuning is required.
Here's the thing, do you need optimal results? As a manufacturer, we need to look at the big picture. What is the application? Who is the customer? For someone who just wants to enjoy their boat with a little more speed and efficiency is not going to be happy with the same parts that someone who is trying to make the top 10 list. Some users just want to get in their boats and have it work, yet some get off on how every little change will affect performance. Lastly, a 70 MPH ski boat does not require the same construction that a 120+ MPH race boat does.
Ultimately, we consider loaders to be required equipment. If they didn't work, we wouldn't make them! Every boat on the top 10 list is running a loader. If something on any one of those boats didn't contribute to performance, would anyone continue to run it?
Every case presented against the use of loaders is an example of the wrong combination. There is justification for the use of rock grates, some boaters just can't stay off the rocks. I am willing to bet that any boat will pick up performance simply by removing the rock grate. Even more if an effort to blend the recession for mounting the grate is filled to blend in the contour of the intake roof.
