Title: Havasu seaweed?
Post by: 76Rogers on July 11, 2015, 05:08:20 PM
Is anyone else running down in havasu who keeps sucking up all of this damn seaweed? I've sucked it up twice today and both times I almost over heated my engine. It's starting to become overwhelming.

Thats where I caught it the second time! The first time was right at the mouth of the lake trying to go up River. Right by Disneyland.

Yes. We had some coming out of the river, we had to stop because the boat wouldn't go anywhere and coming out of the channel too. If u are in those areas just have to clean the pump out.

Yeah it's even worse than it usually is at Windsor.

I guess I sucked some up at the beginning of the channel and since its no wake I couldn't really tell the difference in power. So I was just idling through but I could feel how hot my engine was getting (temp gauge is temporarily broken) but I had no idea that it was the seaweed in my pump. So whenever I finally stopped I felt underneath and grabbed two huge handfuls of grass from the bottom the intake. I'm just glad I didn't harm the engine at all from how hot it was getting.

Dumb question, do you have to clean it out by hand ? Pulling seaweed out from grate. Can't you just flush the pump with reverse bucket down. Blow it out of the grate.

Post by: WhyNot76 on July 13, 2015, 06:19:54 AM
Putting the boat in reverse does not shoot water back out the intake, impeller is still sucking water in, only thing that changes the direction of flow out of the nozzle is the reverse bucket.

If u clean it by hand then u know u got all of it out. My friend thought it was seed weed and he pulled a wooden stick out of his pump. So using your hand would be the best idea.

I had to use a pocket knife and cut it off, it was all wrapped around the impeller shaft

I launched at the marina at the end of industrial sunday and the sea weed or grass was terrible. It plugged up my jet and i overheated. No one with a jet should use that launch.

I stay and launch over on the California side so I don't have to have to deal with the Marina. I think I'm just going to stay away from the channel.

We went into the channel Sunday and had to stop because of the seaweed. Stay away from the channel and go around Windsor. Windsor is bad too.

Definitely! We usually hang out at the sand bar or Disneyland. I'm going to stay away from the channel the rest of the season.

I was at the mouth of the river today and like I said seaweed across the whole channel. Are you just risking it and driving right over it with your jet or is there another way around it?

I just drove up there past the sand bar yesterday and my engine stalled out, it wouldn't restart until an hour or so later. Could this be from overheating? It seems like my engine temp was running normal though. I'm leaning towards another problem with the electrical

Would it Crank?
Crank but not catch?
Did you have fuel?  Spark?

Yes it still would crank, fuel was pumping, did not check for spark, probably should have pulled a wire off to see

We ended up driving up to Pirates cove, launched there and drove south to the sand bar then stopped at Topock 66  for dinner on the way back. Ended up being a nice ride.

I have a prestolite distributor with a pertronix conversion, no computer module. I recently replaced the alternator with what I believe to be the wrong type. The last one I had had a big square box on the back, the new doesn't have that, it has a field wire connection which tells me that it has no built in voltage regulator. The old one had two wires running to it; a battery terminal, and not sure what the other wire is.
