I got rid of mine a lil bit ago. Sold it to a friend that has a lil more time on his hands. My heart wasnt in it, wasnt really the hull that I wanted...

Not like we couldnt find a trailer to put it on or throw it on some stands temporarily!  Lets go this week and take a look. Get it flipped, take a bilge pump with some long battery leads and get it drained and towed back to the ramp.

Whats the worse that can happen? we sell it to 2Sav and it sits in his yard?  ;D

I told my wife about the hunt for Blue October and the idea of rescuing this piece of river lore.  She wondered who really owns it and are there salvage rights for something in a lake/river, not international waters.  Good question.  I'm hoping you save it but you may need to find out who owns it and buy it off them for a buck.  If the feds figure out that it has contaminated the entire water supply of the Western US and want the owner to pay for a Billion dollar "haz-mat" spill then the clandestine method may be best.

Has anyone thought that the original owner might still be under it?

Post by: OC2Vegas on October 07, 2008, 11:50:33 AM
If the wner wants it he can buy it fro whoever finds it. As far as the salvege rights, the answer I got on Monday from an attorney here in Vegas(Salvage rights are not his specialty)was that whoever finds and RECOVERS gets it!

We going Terry?

So here is what I can gather , Terry has a flat bottom ,Josh has an 18' jet and niether would be ideal for towing a wreck . I'd be willing to drag my hallett up there if a few others would join us . The way I see it , if we have enough people , we can flip it and it would still be close enough to shore for us to drag the ass end up on the beach to see if it'll float or at least get some of the water out . I bet it was just swamped by rain or wind and chop . So who wants to car pool up there and split some gas money  :sly:

Your gonna need something to keep it afloat while in tow , just in case . If that fuker goes down while in tow , it'll probably drag the tow boat with . I'll cut the fukin rope if it's behind my Hallett . ASTA LUEGO HONDO ! Hondo is espanol means "deep" so....

PS: what's the distance from where it's resting, to the ramp or where your taking it out?

We could use some spray foam and or 3 bilge plugs. I have a bilge pump and a battery, need some 3/4 ID hose. At the time I found it I think it could have been simply rolled over into the water and be afloat. The water level has come up 3 or 4 feet since then. We can hug the shoreline most of the way to the ramp, maybe a mile, one spot will be over 100ft deep.

Man, I would love nothing more!  That would be a blast.  But, unfortunately, not a option for me.  I don't think that foam will work under water, without air, will it?  I was under the impression that, air was the catalyst for the foam.  My thoughts for the towable tubes, was to rig a sling, using 2 tubes across front and 2 in rear, secured to the deck cleats, or anything to keep the sling from shifting.  Using the tow ropes, will let two guys pull back and forth under the bow, to use as a sling, same with stern.  We've salvaged a couple small boat, that were in 6' waters, this way.  It went pretty smooth, rednecks. LOL.   I'm just thinking out loud, not meaning to butt in.  Just a thought.

soooooo........just how are we going to get this thing off the lake (trailer) and exactly where are we going to put it?

i thought these details were ironed out, but i just talked to terry and he said its all still up in the air.

last thing i think any of us want to do is get this thing flipped over and towed to the ramp then have to leave it for someone else to take home after we did all the work.
Title: Re: Free Flatbottom
Post by: OC2Vegas on October 22, 2008, 10:38:26 AM
The general idea was that we were going to throw it on terrys trailer take it over to his house and off the trailer and go back for his boat.

If we can find a trailer for sale(cheap) or borrow one, I have a storage business that will let me keep it there(free of charge) until more permanent arragements are made.

If a trailer is not an option I can bring it to the storage place and place it on stands/tires in an inside storage unit (10x20 or 10x30) unit

Ok, just confirmed...I have a 10x20 inside unit it will fit into(without trailer) for temp storage until a trailer can be found

is the storage unit's door wide enough to get the trailer in there? i just got a 10x25 unit....and the damn door is only 7.5' wide  :banghead: although i didnt need the storage unit for my boat, it would have been nice for that option.

and does anyone have some old tires to throw this thing on?

Post by: OC2Vegas on October 22, 2008, 10:46:38 AM
modified my last post.....

I believe the door is 8ft-ish wide so I think it wouldnt fit or would be a tight squeeze, The storage place is right by a couple of "pick a part" type places, dont think it would be hard to find a few tires

ok, things to keep in mind....

this boat probably is full of sand/mud/etc...mostly in places we cant reach (ie under the bow) ....also, its got a motor in it.....so that being said, its going to be a heavy sumovabitch.

how are we going to get it off the trailer and into the storage unit?

so far theres only 4 people involved (oc2vegas, hdrider, chromey, and myself. theres no way 4 people are going to get this thing onto the trailer ....its going to want to sink like a rock at the ramp and will need to be lifted onto the trailer....ive seen teams of 20+ people struggle to get wrecked boats onto trailers.

i say we postpone this until next week until we iron out all the details....the wind is also picking up and terry said they are reporting 40+mph gusts on the lake today. that can only just make things even more difficult especially towing a wrecked boat.

Ok, the wind aint so bad right now. How 'bout taking the pirate ship up pull it up on it's side see what we got. If alls good foam holes and roll it over, pump it out and pull to the ramp, tie the ship to the dock and put it on Chromy's trailer, bring it here and slide it off onto Nordies tires, go back and get the ship. Cant just let it sit in the yard, will need reliable help to remove motor and move shit around. Group project?

Unless it's under a bunch of water it might be easier to float. Can you get some deflated inner tubes under the deck and then fill them up with a compressor? That could take a bunch of weight off the backs of the pirates who pillage her.

me and terry discussed this earlier...the problem is we need a compressor and man power...the deal with that is all of us are on different schedules so getting all of us together is a task in itself, and with the sun going down early that doesnt leave us any time if we attempted this after work...we want to get this boat before it has to spend one more winter underwater...from the picture terry sent me today it isnt far under water so we will see what we can work out...there are alot of things that will half to account for...me and brad discussed this over some beers last night...the motor is in it and probably a ton of mud, that alone is going to make it extremely heavy...i wish we could make this a smash and grab deal, but we are all amatures when it comes to unsinking a vessel that probably has rested there for quite a while...i call this mission TITANIC...a true sunken gem...terry had me yesterday he's all what if this thing has a blower on it...interesting thought

the things i believe we need for the mission

battery
bilge pump
floatation devises
man power
come-a-longs
some rigging
shovels
something to plug holes if it has any
transportation of the boat
tow line
compressor
lots of beer
tools
more beer
maybe some pails for bailing out alot of water
and im sure alot more
Title: Re: Free Flatbottom
Post by: wizard612 on October 23, 2008, 05:15:23 PM
Instead of a compressor a bunch of basketballs or anything with air in it that you could force under the deck could work.  Someone thought they could raise the Titanic with millions of ping pong balls someone didn't tell them what the pressure would do to them at that depth though. Another thought. there are some foot type air mattress pumps out there that pump a lot of air quickly.  that and heavy duty trash bags might actually hold air long enough for you to get a sling under it in order to flip it. once flipped over try to get the mud out while it's still sunk in the shallows then tow it out with someone bailing once the gunnels get above water. Same method we used to re-float a flipped boat at the races.  By the way I really wish I could help you guys out it sounds like such a great adventure.

Post by: v-drive video on October 23, 2008, 05:33:24 PM
If that is a typical Hondo sprint, the deck may not be capped (not air tight) and the deck will most likely be foam filled. Also the bulkheads usually have a smaller than usual access hole. These boats also have front to back bulkheads.

I think you guys will have a decent chance now that the water is up. Make sure you bring a stout towline in triplicate and lots of muscle.

Title: Re: Free Flatbottom

Heres my idea ;D

[yt=425,350]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HoHYYOylqVs&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HoHYYOylqVs&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/yt]

27000 Ping Pong balls to raise an 1800lb boat! The best price I can find for Bulk Ping Pong balls is .33/each. Which means that if the boat weighs half as much as the one on MythBusters it would take 13500 balls at a cost of $4500!

Next option!

Title: Re: Free Flatbottom
Post by: Nordie on October 23, 2008, 06:30:07 PM
another thing is that i went and picked up a sunken vessel that was proffesionaly brought back up, and we spent 9 hours in the marina using a garden hose and other things to get all the sand out of the boat...i bet when i pulled the boat out of the water it weighed about 10000 pounds every compartment was packed with sand...and the recovery guy told us how unstable it was to tow back because of all the sand...this is something else to take into consideration...

Why cant (assuming a bunch of heads can go ) you just drag it up on beach , rightside up , and backwards (ass up on the beach) to try and get all the water out . I dont think it's full of sand since it is upside down .

It might be easier to transport a bottle of nitrogen, over an air compressor (for filling floaties).

If it wasn't so far I would like to help.

What's the hold up?  This should be easy, just flip it over, drain the water, fill it with oil & fuel and drive it back to the dock.   O0   It ran when it got there, didn't it?   ;D

Good luck with the recovery, don't hurt anyone.

You thing this project is tough. Try recovering and restoring Malcolm Campbell's K7 Bluebird.  Crash killed Campbell in 1967.  Found the boat and the driver in 2001. Buried Malcolm and are restoring the boat.  See web site they have pix of the process. http://www.bluebirdproject.com/ (http://www.bluebirdproject.com/)

I think since winter is coming on, the lake will continue to rise and if we get a lot of snow up stream she may be gone for good if someone doesn't get it soon.  Diving gear may be needed already.

problem is that we still dont have a way to get it from the ramp to storage...and we dont even have anywhere to store it!

yeah, oc2vegas said he got a storage unit, but its not wide enough to get a trailer in there, so that means we would have to have enough people to lift AND carry it into the unit.

THEN hdrider said he would store it on the side of the house if we all go over there and tear down a wall....im all down for getting this boat ressurected, but i aint down for that.

so until someone comes up with an ultimate plan AND the people to execute it...it aint happening.

so yeah....keep saying youre gunna come and do it cuz we're all being lazy about it.....make sure you bring 10 or so people with you.  :screwy:

i'm still waiting to hear from the crane guy. he was off a couple days then i was off a couple days then friday i busted my ankle so i've been off. the wall is 5x8, nordie said he had some tires and was gonna push or pull the wall down w/ his truck. we dock a boat, prolly mine, put it on the trailer and drop it off on the tires....done

If you are seriously going... I'll throw new tires on the old trailer the stevens sits on (single axle, solid but rough old trailer) and set the stevens on the ground while I build a dolly.  Go get it and we'll get the trailer back sometime this winter.  May not be direct but I'm on your way.

Dude, I was drowning my sorrows, in a bottle of Wild Turkey, at the time I wrote that.  However, if I feel the need to stay home, or loose my job, and sit home and wait for Obama's free money, that the working stiffs will be providing, maybe we can have fun and take a road trip out there. ;D   We could swing thru Tucson, got a bunch of friends there.  I'd never snake a boat from my forum buds from the west, but I think it'd be a f'in blast, to go screw off for a week with them.

I want to go to NZ, I just watched a movie agout a guy who baught a '21 Indian and braught it here to Bonneville and set 9 land speed records. This guy poured his own pistons in his shed! 67 yrs old, baught the bike new, went two hundred miles an hour! The name of the movie was "Worlds fastest Indian" with Anthony Hopkins, highly recomended. Anyway the guy was from NZ, big go fast sceen over there.

Sh*t, if these old hulls could talk! I know the complete history on mine, so no surprises, one owner, one engine and one mechanic it dont get much better then that on a 25 yr old boat. Glass and stainless should be fine on the sunken treasure and I have the rest to put it together.

Of course its still there, these guys are still in the "planning" stage.  :screwy:

Give them about 6 more months and then maybe they might try to get it.  Of course they will just drag it into deeper water and sink it again.  >:D ;D

I've gotta admit, reading the first few pages I was all excited for this stuff and was kinda bummed I wasn't around when all the planning was going on... So I'm looking at the page 12 marker and thinkin 'hell, lets just see the end result'....... and here I am!  ???

Lets get this thing out! The body under it has got to be decomposed by now, so it can be like a real pirate ship, complete with skeleton.  ;)

You guys wanna go get it? I'm in if you wanna wait til I'm up there in June, (Which appears to be the case, why hurry now?)

I can probably pull it over with my boat and some persuasion, and as Omar said, strap some inner tubes to the underside of it, voila!

Dunno what any of us, or all of us, are gonna do with it, but..... Might be kinda cool to rebuild a piece of lore.

did the hull have any significant holes that would allow water in?

A few small ones that you can tell water and oil had leaked out, but nothing that cant be sealed up with some expanding foam.

This thing is VERY close to the Marina. So foam wouldnt have to hold for very long.

I've go tot put header gaskets in mine ..again, Want to wait till Dyno-Flo is open so I can get some good ones. If we prop it up w/ wood or something we can get any shit out. If we just flip it it gonna smash onto the rocks. We could put it on my trailer bring it to town and go back and get my boat. It has three drain holes in the back and a couple pin holes. I have two bilge pumps and two batteries. headers are mangled still have twisty baffles in 'em. Top of transome looked good

My concern is if the wood, stringers, bulkhead etc. is swullin up and rotted. I went and saw the long nose Hallett tonight and the Sanger in Indian Springs last saturday. The Hallet would make a nice roundy/ drag boat. the Sanger bubble deck would make a nice drag/ cruiser.

Title: Re: Free Flatbottom
Post by: IRRebel on May 12, 2009, 10:23:16 PM
From what I can see, a few old tires. two boats with tow straps hooked to it and a couple guys on shore, should be able to flip it easily. If anything, I would jack it up or lift it and maybe put a tire or two under the shoreline side gunwales of it, then put a few out there to catch it once you flip it. It's already kinda angled to flip easily, with a few guys on shore to get it lifted up and going. Getting it off the shore will be a method of pulling it a little and moving the tires then, over and over again.  The problem is to go easy with the pulling boats, something none of us are used to, lol.

(Pulled many a backhoe and bulldozer out of the muck, rivers, etc. even a few flipped backhoes)

Can be done with one boat, I would think, but the more the merrier, and easier. Be safe on this guys, stay clear when the boats are pulling!

I mean this boat belongs to someone. Either the owner or some insurance company that paid the owner when it sank. I can picture the look on the rangers face when he pulls up and sees a bunch of pirates trying to salvage this boat. ;D

I'm down to help you guys out but I don't want to end up in trouble either.

dang  guys
this thread is getting to be longer then 2Sav`s boat thread. figured you all would have had this done and out by now. if only i was closer would be willing to help. and no it isn`t like an hr or two drive. more like 18 hrs.
think i need to start a poll thread on how many pages it is before you all get that there boat out and at someones house, trailer whatever.

I say we keep this thread going and give the flatty to 2Sav to build  :o :sly: :screwy:

GT

OR
you sell it to me for the standard SoCal offer and i make 2sav an offer for his oars and  i have a working boat. lmao. would be a b***h pulling the kids tubing. might need an extra set of oars and one more person to row. any takers. lol

Dunno, lemme get my gps charged, it's a lot more accurate than mapquest, and it's still in the Blue Meaney, lol

I'm guessing maybe 4 hours. (Hopefully the bridge building in Wickenburg is done)

I'll get back to ya on that. Might as well keep the boat and use it over Memorial Day weekend. Maybe you can ID where the gasoline smell comes from. (I think the carb, not seeing any gasoline leaking anywhere)

I'm working all that weekend (Volunteered in order to get an extended 4th off). Maybe we can all get together again then, after the Father's day trip. (Still working on my brother and his girl to bring both boats.)

Jeremy, looks like Wikieup should be your side of halfway, and should be less than 3 hours from you, about 4 from me (According to GPS, I bet it's more like 3). That would put me there right about 5 or 6 pm Monday. Should miss rush hour in PHX too, which is good.

Theres a few restaurants and gas stations there too, so a good spot.

Seems to me I made Vegas before in like 5 and half hours though.  >:D

Turns out I'm off Tuesday too,  >:D But can't go up there with you guys with the kids here, and then back to work at 4 am Wednesday,  :banghead:

Well, there's you and Terry, Jeremy's got my boat, so that's three. Chromey's not fixing his, so I'd guess he's free (sent Jeremy with a couple toddler vests, JIC Chromey tries the Babysitter excuse), I'd say you're ok if you have a few old tires or tubes layin around. More tha  enough horsepower to flip it and drag it. I'd take some spray foam (The Door and Window stuff), and a couple tubes of silicone, but that's just me thinking out loud.

Left Jeremy with one rope, 25' I think, might need more.

This is just me guys, I would try lifting it. put some tires or tubes under the gunwales of it, then drag it right into the shoreline before flipping it.  You've prolly already planned this with Terry's Yeager, but you might be able to flip it right into the water on it's bottom.

Just my .02, and you guys prolly already thought of that.

If your PH and Alkalinity isnt right then it will never keep chlorine in it. You also need use Stabilizer or the sun will just continue to burn the Chlorine off.

Jeremy only borrowed one boat. Mine, which apparently had more problems in it (that I was unaware of) than an episode of dirty jobs!

He's done well with it, and I tease about what it's gonna cost me, and I will pay for all this, but it does bother me that you guys would gang up on him like this. He coulda just as easily said "hey, have your focking POS boat back" and been done with it, but no, he chose to fix the thing and make it right. Between Jeremy, Nordie and Terry, they've done a TON of work on my boat.

So leave him alone, lol.

Sorry Jeremy, had to vent when I read that.

Went out to have a look today, took shovels, 2x4, etc. went to pull up to the beach thats near it and the beach wasnt there

Apparently, the water level had dropped since yesturday and now theres no where to beach except the rocks. There was a breeze and there were some rollers coming into the cove, so I wasnt letting the boat get slammed into them.

It will have to wait till.....Echo Bay Trip??

A breeze  ???

10-15 with gust to 25. Made some nice 2-3 rollers with the occasional white cap! As we were surveying the coast line trying to find a decent spot to beach we had a couple come over the back of the cruiser (and it has a swim deck). Decided that I wasnt sinking one boat to recue another.

We also need Terrys flatty trailer, and with the conditions his boat wasnt leaving his driveway.

....no barges alowed?       Jet skis?

the water depth isnt ideal for barges....lots of shallow areas.....just gotta know how to read the water.

and yes, theres jet skis, but not anything like the avi.

i know youre an old river rat....but im telling you, the saturday of the fathersday weekend that we all went to parker last year....jeremie, rivertad and myself put our boats on the trailer and headed for big river.....we launched around noon and were on the water till 6 or 7....i think i saw maybe 3-4 other boats on the water the entire time....this is a SATURDAY AFTERNOON. not a weekday.

i know youre bitter about parker and hate the place and dont blame you, but please stop generalising the entire river with your experience at parker.  ;)

Terry just picked me up a Sanger flat bottom v-drive and is gonna start wrenching on it (News at 11 on that! WOO HOO!) RJ will be excited! But yeah, we're gonna get this thing if it kills me now, lol. Yeah, Steve, it's BBC and we're goin blown on this dealio!

Yeah, I know, the Bi thing, lol. But gotta at least try a V-drive and BBC! I think RJ will get a kick out of it! 'sides, still looks like a jet in the water!

Dunno what's gonna happen with the "Free" one (Let's be honest here, we're stealing it). Didn't think about that, really. In this process I've lost a boat, then gained one, so gonna be kinda cool to figure out what to do wit it once we get it.

My thoughts are to build it then use it as a backup boat at these SCJB events in case someone breaks down. But that's just me. The boats gonna be in Terry's hands, so vote now, lol.

Edit: and as a V-drive, it'll have the dizzy on the right end again!

I wouldnt worry about it being covered again. Mead always lets out more water then it takes in  :screwy:

All right genius, then how did the spillways over flow in 1983?  :screwy:

In doesn't really matter anyway since the boat will continue to rot right where it sits.

Loaned out a tow boat once on it, looks like it might take some of us to just go and DO it, lol. Dunno if it's under water now or not tho.

based on where the water lines were when josh went a couple of weeks ago, i would say its above water.

it was 1/2 under water when terry and i looked at it last spring and the water level was 5' or so higher then what is seen in joshs pictures from a couple of weeks ago.

X2!!!

Reminds me of a bud of mine, I met well after the burning and sinking of MY Beisemeyer. Learned a few months ago that he too sank a Beisemeyer in the same lake! Was years ago, and the boat was less than a few months old at the time. Basically swamped by other ignorant boaters, as I understand it, and him being inexperienced, well.....sounds all too familiar to me! (We call it Beisey Lake now)

He has this Sonar dealio now and has been mapping the lake bottom lately to see if he can find it again! I guess they couldn't back then. He has found what's left of mine, though!

That Flat Bottom might well have an even more interesting story to tell! Still would be cool as hell to bring it back to life! Why I was so adamant about it. Still am, really!

Well it's obvious that the people who know where it is can't or won't get it so let the location be known. Let The Swamp Thing be recovered by someone, anyone with the moxie get it and take it home.  I suspect that since so much time has lapsed that the wood in it is full of little living things and the motor would be best used as an anchor.

That boat will be a soggy piece of delaminated shit. The engine will be rusted out junk. Maybe you can salvage the v-drive but that isn't too likely either... It's also illegal to take anything out of Lake Mead (that's what Greg from vesseil assist told me).

Mother in law just stopped bye the house and showed her pics to see if she could remember. She could not remember the color but she said either blue or yellow and that he had them all hot rodded out.Headers and big carb. She said that they used to camp and the wind came up and when they woke up the boat was long gone all three times. She did say that that if that was his boat it would of looked like that back in the day.She also said that it sank in the early 80's maybe 81 or 2.

Hell, the hull looks better than some I've seen that haven't been sunk, and that's a perfectly good core motor.  i bet with a good cleaning, that casale box is still rebuildable.

I'd be strapping a line to the bow eye and towing it back to the ramp...looks like it'll float.

Technically, it's not "in" lake mead, so it's fair game right?

lake mead national recreation area! its a huge area surrounding the lake, and belongs to the fed's! i really think of it as something with cool history that should be left unscathed
Title: Re: Free Flatbottom
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on June 07, 2010, 07:34:27 PM
yeah, what he said...plus someone mentioned before that theres also a no scavenging law as well.

the hull is in much worse shape then you think....big hole in the passanger side rub rail where it had been rubbing on rocks for years......im sure the wood (if any left) is rotted beyond anyone can believe.....what was left of the interior was just vinyl. the wood was gone....so imagine what those stringers look like under the glass......and im sure that vdrivecase is usable, but after a ton of work.....and to get it out...good luck....99% of the bolts heads in the entire boat are rusted so bad, theres no shape to them anymore.

i say we leave it alone...let it lay in its grave.

Most of me agrees with you guys, flip it back over and let it RIP.  History of that thing has to be a good story, though.

Part of me still agrees with Pat and Terry, snag it and see what can be done! Christ, I think Riverroy has done almost the same thing on his that would be required, short the transom. Be kinda like rebuilding the Titanic.

I hafta wonder, years from now, when Stewart Dam needs redone (it's comin, it's old) and they pretty much drain Saguaro lake, what people will think of Cave and my's Biesemeyers that'll turn up? And lord knows what else is down there.........
