Title: Timing an old 200 merc
Post by: todd98se on May 05, 2014, 08:41:33 PM: Anyone every done it? Ive built engines but my experience setting timing involves going into a timing map and changing cell values....... From my reading to do it right (most accurate) I need a TDC dial indicator and need to find TDC on each cylinder and then set timing based on the one with the most advance. The Clymer manual looks fairly straightforward but I'm scared to screw this up.

When you say "old 200 Merc, I am going to assume you are talking a Thunderbolt ignition straight six?

It is fairly straight forward, is this one old enough to have a distributor?

I guess what I'm trying to say is "what's the serial number"... Need a wee bit more info.

Follow the book, it really is that straight forward. I use Liquid Paper to mark the indexes. It seems to hold the light better. Stay away from that hungry ass flywheel, I have a couple pretty jacked up fingers from those sombitches. :sly:

Post by: lbhsbz on May 05, 2014, 09:51:43 PM: It's easy...make sure you shitcan the black boxes...idle stabilizer and advance module. The work best in the trash can. Use your indicator to find the earliest TDC, grab that wire with your timing light, fire it up on the hose and yank the trigger arm to the stop, set it to 25 degrees and call it done.
