Are your fuel tanks vented properly?

How are the fuel lines routed?

What fuel pump? Regulated?

Float levels set correctly?

Is the carburetor completely stock?

Honestly it sounds like the wrong metering block gaskets are being used...... Happens often.

My phone was acting up yesterday couldn’t really type, but after the boat acted up again on Friday, mechanic came and put another carb on, it was off his boat, it was a 950 double pumper, def too much carb for motor but idea was to try and isolate problem, boat ran great all Saturday, I mean it bogged down lil at 43-4500 rpm n ran rich but it fired up every time right away and never flooded, so the problem appears to b in my carb, so after all that u still think I should mention the metering block gaskets? Or anything else? I really appreciate all ur guys opinions n help... I’m sooooo close to having a top shape running and looking boat after wayyyyyy more cash than I’d like to remember but the kids love it so screw it right! Lol I gotta put some pics up, completely redid interior, motor, jet, transom, stereo, etc etc etc lol

Common problem is the body on the Holley carbs warp over time. This is due too over tightening the bowls usually. Heat also will distort the body over time. I have seen brand new carbs do the same. Generally from your description of what is happening that is the most common issue. Check your fuel pressure  as well I do not like more than 5.5 psi. Too much effort for the needle and seat.

Interesting I’ll def have him check that for the warping and to see the fuel pressure..

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Carb issues
« on: October 02, 2017, 04:35:02 PM »
Hey everyone just wanna get ur guys opinions, rebuilt 454 this season, carb got rebuilt as well, (3rd time this season, twice now since motor rebuild) went on test drive Friday with mechanics boat runs   perfect for 2 hours, turns off 25-30 times, fires right up all good, put on trailer take down street to campground launch it n it barely starts n runs like its flooded. SzALWAYS. Does it after sitting 20/30 min after being warmed up, they take carb apart say needs rebuild, jets n carb clogged? We're starting to think there's a internal leak we can't see? Slowly leaks n floods over 20 min? Any help appreciated.. Holley single pumper 650(maybe 600) but single pumper

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: 454 compression test
« on: July 31, 2017, 08:33:24 PM »
Well it's bad news, all bad news... took it to mechanic today did another compression test same #5 was low, so go to pull the valve cover off, then notice a crack going all the way thru the indomar exhaust manifold, after getting the valve cover off and he determined it does need a valve job, we find metal shavings in the oil... so it looks like bearings and all that goes with it will be getting done as well.. good news I'll have a like new motor lol. My question is do u guys think I'm not smart for telling them just leave it stock just make it like new again or should I add some mild things since they're in there? TBH I'm happy doing 55-60 top speed and cruising at 45-50 and knowing it starts every time and doesn't give me problems, it's my first boat and I got 2 young kids so not gonna have much opportunities to go much faster anyway... also anyone know where I can get a nice used set of water cooled exhaust manifolds? Also u guys would agree it's not good idea to weld n fix the cracked manifold right? Thanks in advance everyone!

« on: July 25, 2017, 01:50:02 PM »
I should've been more descriptive sorry lol my buddy is a car mechanic for years we just did a dry test and now the shop I go to wants to do a wet test and leak down, and another test to isolate the problem before jumping into it. I guess I just figure it needs a valve job considering it's 27 years old and never been opened up? Is that not accurate statement?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 454 compression test
« on: July 25, 2017, 11:31:33 AM »
So after my BBC stock original 454 not running right we just did a compression test, #5 read at 87-90 and the rest were in between 110-120, so I'm told I need a valve job, my main question is is it not smart to just do a valve job and not rebuild the rest of the motor? It's a stock 454 and at this time I'm not trying to have anything other than reliable nice cruiser.. trying not to break bank but also don't want to regret not doing something when it was torn apart in 6 months... also ballpark what am I looking at for shop like very basic ballpark, $1k, 2k  more? Less? Thanks guys I appreciate it very much

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / BBC hesitates but never dies
« on: July 06, 2017, 10:01:51 PM »
Just got on the water today ran good for 30 min or so then started hesitating little bit but never died n kinda thought it worked itself out but then pulled into no wake zone, let off the gas and it was still prob around 2000-2500 rpm, (tach isn't working, getting new gauges n couple weeks) but it was keeping me going bout 10-12mph without me on throttle at all, so I hit the throttle kinda hard and it idled down a bit but still was revving higher than normal for sure, by then I got to my spot but curious what u guys think, it was really acting as if it had the choke engaged still but idk... I'm thinking carb needs adjusting? It's a Holley 750 thank u guys for ur advice...

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: 454 fires but won't run
« on: June 05, 2017, 02:44:05 PM »
I did take it to the river and it fired up, then it quit. I re-installed the new BR and it seems to work fine. I'm going to
go thru everything and double check for corrosion and mis-installed parts by the previous owner. Ignition seems to
be the only weak link here. Thank you for all the help.

I had the exact same problems last year and beginning of this season with the Mallory, I bit the bullet and had an msd installed and it's literally like a new boat, had 2 trips messed up from the Mallory ignition and 2 mechanics say they are just temperamental after they get older, I'm definitely not a mechanic but after the msd it's night and day man boat runs better too it's like it was misfiring or something before and now perfect... good luck with it man!

Hey everyone! So over the off season we had tons of work done, new interior, stereo, motor got pulled, new jet, new transom, new msd ignition system to replace Mallory, motor went back in no upgrades just pulled out serviced put back in, after working out few kinks boats running great but last trip at havasu motor temp would jump 20 degrees almost immediately after pulling into no wake zone after a 20 min cruise at like 45 mph not floored it by any means... even before all the work, gauge always has motor running at 135-140 which I thought is cool so at the no wake zone it jumped to 160 immediately so I opened the hatch and it seemed to cool back off, should I b concerned it runs so cool? Maybe faulty gauge? I am having issues with other gauges, speedo n tach went out last trip, speedo always been temperamental and I had em replace the speedo mechanism on the transom still nothing... thanks for all your help guys! I'll post pics of all the upgrades later today!

Hey gt and glasscutter, I'd love some advice from u guys, I'm in a bad spot kinda, I have money to put down on a house, live in oc with my wife n kids, been renting my whole life, basically because my industry isn't accepted by the banks and Feds, (medical marijuana) and I can't prove my income... I'm told that I can buy on a stated income? What u guys think? I could put 60-80k down and it came from a settlement so not like it's bad money or anything lol.. been renting forever though and I'm so tired of it, I mean I pay 2800 a month and yes we have a great house but I'm sure the mortgage is less than 2k. Thanks for ur advice guys u guys need a podcast or something called jet boats and life by gt n glasscutter 😂😂😂
