Jet Pumps / Re: Berkeley 12JC impeller question

Thanks guys for the advice
I had to grit my teeth a little but managed to click the place oder now button.

A little over $400 is worth knowing everything is new in there.

I do need to work on my stealthy boat hiding skills...
But i got the lying part practiced up pretty good :)

But honey...its probably only gonna be $120 bucks or so for the parts..
Course if she gets to the mailbox before i do and opens the credit card bill i wont ever eat or get laid again lol

A quick over view goes something like this...
I actually am a car guy and wanted a jet boat to turn some wrenches on versus a turn key.
So after not seeing any jet boats for sale in years...i found two for cheap and bought them both.

I'm sure some of you can relate to the NEGATIVE enthusiasm your significant other expresses when you drag two of these things home and park them on the lawn lol

One was a 460 ford powered Glastron carlson And the other a olds / Chevy powered Wriedt spoiler
I parted out the carlson it was just too far gone for rot and damage but ran perfect.
so i kept the wriedt and have some spare parts for my project.
And it is a project...it has sat for like 18 years so nothing i'm headed to the lake with this weekend lol

The wriedt appears to have had another set of motor mount holes where the engine mounts , so i assumed maybe they blew up the previous ford or olds and put the present 454 in.

So thats my story...

If i was to buy a new impeller kit Is there a middle of the road future proof choice that would run decent in the lake and have flexibility for a better engine later?

The engine i have now is stock but that can change any time.
So putting the pump together now, Then building a new engine over the winter would probably be a waste if i chose the wrong impeller size.

Where would you suggest i check for impeller kits?
Is there any good online shops? Do they sell after market ones that are better or is a stock Berkeley best?

Thanks for the info jim.
So if i understand the bare basics and keep things very simple...
I could use that impeller and the effects of that would be a change in peak rpm of the engine?

Jet Pumps / Berkeley 12JC impeller question
« on: August 10, 2017, 06:50:10 AM »
I apologize in advance ...
Im a total newbie to jet boats and pumps and will probably have more than my share of questions along the way.

I'm trying to put a pump together from parts.
Most of the parts i should probably throw in the scrap mans pile lol

Anyway, my first issue is the impeller is missing a blade or two.
I have another that looks really good , At least to a newbies eyes but is shaped a little different.
and the blades don't appear as long.

I am going to attempt to post a picture of them side by side.
Could someone tell me if it's ok to use it or should i buy a new one?

Thank you for the advice.
Im not in love with this hull , just would have been nice to fix it.
Since the engine actually runs great and has some upgrades.
Mallory distributor, edelbrock carb and other little stuff.
And has good compression 150+ in all cylinders.
So i can salvage the engine at the very least and move on if needed.

Do most engines fit most pumps with a simple bell housing swap?
Considering i have a complete ford setup could i buy a olds or chevy powered boat with a bad engine and use my stuff?

Buying a turn key boat for $10k just seems like cheating taking the easy way out lol.
So id like to do a little work to it if that makes any sense.

But...i suppose the next boat i get i should increase my budget higher than $300 and at least buy a solid hull.

Oh well at least i learned the hard way cheaply and have some usuable stuff

So , There i was watching some YouTube videos..
Thinking to myself how cool it would be to get a jet boat.

Damn YouTube..lol
So i got myself into a mess i think?
I bought a 1976 Glastron Carlson 19 foot with a 460 ford and a JE pump.
I bought it pretty cheap for $300 and figured like a lottery ticket either i win or lose.
Figuring i could scavenge some parts maybe if it was a total loss.

For $300 including trailer i can't expect much and i knew this going in.
But if i can fix it enough to play with and use it as a guinea pig as i learn more about boats i can get a better one someday.

My question is the transom...
The floors and stringers are in rough shape , Which i'm sure you guys already guessed lol
But i wondered about the transom?
Being a JE style i think i read some place the hulls are formed for the pump?
Does this mean there is no wood in the transom to rot?
And if there is wood should i be concerned with it's strength or just replace the stringers and floor and roll with it?

Thanks for any advice you can give this newbie
