I have a bad cold idle, and am down about 500rpm, and 10mph at WOT. I do not have a check valve on my Holley 750carb, and have had this issue before, but always had a friend that recently passed on take care of my carb...so I just dropped it off, and got it back- never knowing what was done to it.
Do these symptoms seem like something a blown power valve would cause?
No other changes have been made to the boat.

Took the boat for a ride...Ran fine.  Did seem to run out of gas one time when I floored it from idle, so I raised up the needle a little bit, with the sight screw out, but still did not see any fuel at the proper level. Boat ran normal after that. Won't be able to use the boat this weekend, so I decided to pull the carb (HOLLY 750 double pumper with vaccume secondairies) and have it re-built at a good local shop. Hope It comes back and runs better than ever!

Took front bowl off, and cleaned out all the funk, and blew out the jets with carb cleaner. Took out the float and needle and cleaned them all up as well. Not sure how to set a float, so I just put it back in about the way it was. Fired it up in the garage-10:25 PM here!  Started way to easy...for not haveing any fuel in the bowl,-did have a fair amount of carb cleaner down the manifold. Only ran it for about 10 seconds twice, but seemed to idle as well as ever for a cold motor. Probly wont get to try it on the water for a few days, but mabe this will help. If I have the float set to low...the worst that will happen is the engine may suck the bowl dry...RIGHT???? If it is too high, fuel will still dump into the carb like crazy... RIGHT????   Or am I way off?

What does it mean when fuel keeps running out of the carb (into engine) after the engine is shut off? Plus, engine is loading up at idle, and misses and sometimes even dies due to flooding out. On a side note...it runs better and faster than ever at higher RPM. Have made no changes at all...problem comes and goes, but is getting worse. sometimes gas will run out the tailpipes.

I rebuilt the pump myself...it had about 10 hours on it running very well before this. The gap was pretty tight----like I wanted it. The ring was just stuck to the impeller by sand...not melted to it. After cleaning both, they have the gap they should again. I DO think I will need a new insulator because the used one I tried to put in does not hold the ring very tightly....I was able to push the wear ring all the way in with just my fingers...So, I guess the boat will be down until next week when I get one one mailed to me.

So...I ran my boat about 350 feet into 3" deep water on saturday. It killed the motor and all, and took the usuall effort of pushing a 3000lb boat off of a sandbar. After cleaning out the sand from the controls, and as much as I could from the pump, and a very hard start-up the boat seemd to run pretty much like normal...for about a mile or two.  Then, it started getting "hot", and started to lose enough thrust to come off of plane. I pulled over, and pulled what looked like a bunch of tire tube, or some other rubber of some sort out of the pump. After that, it ran pretty decent, and was no longer overheating. Decided to take it home for the day. Took it out again two days later, and it just did not take off as well as it should have, and was also running about 2-300 RPM higher than normal at all speeds. Also was told by onlookers that it was not shooting as big of a rooster tail as normal. Took it apart tonight, and found that the wear ring was fused to the impeller, and the insulator was totally missing. I guess the sand jammed tight enough in the gap to lock the two pieces together, and spin the wear ring in the insulator...destroying it. That would also expain the very hard start after the crash. I am suprised the boat ran as well as it did in this condition! So... I dont have a new insulator, but I do have an old one that seems to be in usable condition, so I am planning to just put that one back in, and try it. I want the boat running this weekend pretty bad because my 9 year old has her heart set on learning to ski this weekend. There is absolutly no place here in Wisconsin to get a new insulator that soon, so I am crossing my fingers that the old one will work!

Got to run the boat again. Pulled 3 person tube. I was surrised...boat would run 25 mph @2800RPM pulling the 3 person tube. It would have been revved up alot more than that before, and cavitated a little starting off. Boat is doing everthing it used to do better with lower rpm at every speed

I did this the first time I ever pulled a tube with the boat...Now I keep a razor sharp steak knife in the boat...have not needed it. Was able to cut out all 75' of rope with a dull knife...took over an hour...lots of 4-6 inch pieces

With the old impeller...the engine would pull 4000 RPM on 2 barrels, and run exactly 40 mph at that RPM. I know this because I had the secondarys disconnected at one time. RPM's are lower than before at all speeds, with almost no cavitation on launch at all...-had some before. The impeller I put in is whatever aluminum impeller Berkeley gives you with a master rebuild kit...looks exactly like the one I took out...minus the damage.

Speed is confirmed by GPS...Not sure about TACH...-just know that RPM's are less than before. This was also the first run of the year for the boat after sitting since last September. Engine does not "sound" like it is reving up any too high though.  Have not checked timing, but it has not changed since last season. Also have not taken air cleaner off and confirmed throttle is opening all the way, but again...nothing has been changed there either.  I will probly pull all the plugs, and check the throttle cables. Also...the bucket is opening all the way. I modified the whole nozzle, bucket and steering to allow for the biggest roostertail possible, so I did check out all of that stuff to make sure it is working correctly.
 Other than the basics... I probly have to much CAM for my 468, with a "new" A impeller. Before I get too exited about adding any power, I will see how the fuel economy is, and I can only guess that it will be better than it was by running the engine "slower"  One thing that I also need to confirm it that the vaccum secondarys are opening at all...4000 RPM might not be doing it... It will be hard to confirm because I have a covered engine, and it would not be to good running around the lake at 55 mph with that up looking down the carb!

Just put in a new aluminum "A" impeller, wear ring, and seals/bearings. Boat had a "A" impeller before as well. Boat runs about the same top speed, with alot better launch, and way less cavitation. Only issue is it knocked my peak RPM's down by 1000. For the record...It runs 55@4000 RPM- it used to run that speed at 5000 RPM. Engine it a 468 chevy, nothing special, just domed pistons, shaved heads, and decked block. According to the BERKELY HP vs. IMPELLER chart, I am only making 200 HP! It was rated at 360 stock.  Not sure about cam specs. Kind of dissapointed that my engine is not making the power to turn the new impeller any faster, but I am happy with the lower RPM, and less noise that goes with it.  Boat is a heavy BAJA, that is used to take the kids along, tube, and mostly just run around shooting big rooster tails, so it does not really need to be any faster.    Just wondering if there is usually that much of an RPM drop going from a "old worn out" pump, to a "new, tight" pump. Either way...boat performs better, at lower RPM's, so I guess I should be happy!

Also on this...The vanes have a pretty "ruff" surface finish -from casting.  Should I smooth and polish as much of that "ruffness" as I can get to? or is it not worth the time?

I finally tore apart my 84 berk JF pump! I'm doing an impeller/wear ring, bushings and seals...not front bearing at this time. Impeller front edges were OK, rear edges were bent, cracked, and one had a decent size piece missing. The leading edges of the bowl vanes are nicked up a little, but no big dings, or chunks missing. My question is "how should I file them?" I have seen some people put a "flat" edge on them, but I thought I would just "take out the nicks" so the edges were smooth, and leave the basic rounded vane edges the way they are. For the most part, the vanes are not too bad compared to pics or others I have seen...I just want to dress them up, but not screw up anything! I cannot post pics, but mabe a pick of what a used, cleaned up, bowl should look like would be helpfull. Thanks in advance!

Battery seems ok,---i ran the boat later in the day after the battery had charged for a while. started many times, and sat around with raidio on for a long time. I was just mentioning the dash lights to indicate how dead the battery was. boat had not been run in 2 weeks before yesterday. Now, I pulled off the + battery cable, so whatever is wrong can't keep draining the battery. i also plan to check battery voltage after it has been sitting for a few days.

So, I almost always put the charger on my battery for a while before I take out the boat---1 battery, alot of sitting around with the radio on. Today, it was totally dead when I put the charger on,--like dash lights don't come on "dead"  I took off the positive battery cable, and put a volt meter between it and the battery, and it was showing full battery voltage. It showed no amp draw. I did unhook the radio so the clock, and memory were not drawing any voltage, and of course had the key off. I started to narrow down systems that could be shorting out by totally disconecting them one at a time. I found that the alternator seems to be what it shorting out, and draining the battery,--I THINK. It still makes power like it should when it is running for the reccord.  My question is... do they go bad like this?-
by bad I mean an internal short?  How would one test for this before replaceing the whole thing?---and will a regular automotive alternator work instead of a higher priced marine one?  Thanks in advance!

Projects / Looking for BAJA bilge vents

Long story short, Tried teaching my wife how to drive the boat, and now I need a new bilge vent. >:(----NO OTHER DAMAGE!!!! :D    The boat is a 84 BAJA 200ss. Any ideas on where to get one like the one that came with the boat? I am not to hopefull, and will proubly just end up getting 2 new ones so they match.

I guess you "could" possibly bury the nose of the boat, but the Baja 200SS is a pretty big boat, and I "don't think" the pump has enough thrust, or the motor enough power for that to be an issue.  I have tried taking off with it all the way down, and at various "more up" angles with a load, and without.  Of coares you can have it up to high, but it seems like you would not want it down much more than level when compared to the boat sitting level.

Just wondering how much downward angle is enough, or too much?  I have a JE pump with Trim A Just, and it has been modified by grinding the steering knuckle, and the reverse bucket as much as possible to throw the biggest roostertail possible.  However, with the cables being long enough to get the nozzle up as high as it will go, it also gives it more downward travel as well. I have not put any kind of angle meter on it, but it aims way down from shooting straight out the back.  I am just wondering how others set up the "low" angle and if to much is a bad thing.

Got the boat out for the first time this season and it ran perfect! Then it wouldn't start after pulling the kids around in the tube. Turns out it was just the starter solenoid. Don't know why it went bad, but it was most likely 28 years old-like the rest of the boat. The only changes to the boat over the winter was that all of the wire and terminals from the battery were replaced with welding cable instead of the 4 gauge that was on it before,-so the solenoid got more amperage than it ever has before.

X2 on the knife and patience. Or, maybe you can melt it out with a torch? I just spent about an hour cutting out 75 feet of ski rope through the handhole with a steak knife. Plus I was sitting on the back of the pump to do it cuz the boat was in about 50' of water.

What can I expect from a stuffer plate? Boat has a JE-A pump with trim a just. My boat is big, and heavy, and tends to cavitate when launching, or pulling up skiiers. From what I have read, a stuffer plate is most helpfull for improving holeshot, so it seems like it may be something that could help my boat out. The pump has not had a wear ring or impeller  replaced for many hours, but is in good shape otherwise...No front or rear shaft leaks, and all the nylon bushings are tight. I don't plan on doing a full re-build for this season, and don't have a good reason to take the pump apart unless I can gain something with a stuffer.

My boat never starts very well, especially when it is hot. It is a  bbc, and I only run one battery.  One thing I noticed is that all of the wire from the battery, and solonoid to starter was only #4 heavy strand wire, with some really light wieght ends/terminals. So, today I replaced all of the wire with 2-0 welding cable, and super heavy duty ends. It is still winter here in Wisconsin, but I did dry fire the boat to see if the new wire helped. All I can say is WOW! the motor crancks over like never before. All the new wire is so heavy that it wil proubly slow down the boat, but It sure will be nice haveing it turn over properly instead of barely even being able to spin the motor at all.

After looking at several other posts on pump ID, I am starting to think I have a pump that was put togther from parts of at least 2 pumps. As I said, the "front" part of the pump is clearly labled as an JE-A, but the rear end seems to be JF parts? Sorry for not having any pics, but I can't load them onto this website. The youtube vid only shows the boat going by, so other than seeing the spray pattern, that is no help. I guess the long and short of it is that the boat runs pretty well, but I would like it to be a bit better, so if I am wasting thrust by it getting out around the outside of the nozzle, that seems like a good place to start looking for better performance.
