Boat Racing / 2015 Comp Jet High Points Champ
« on: November 03, 2015, 08:59:30 PM »
Congratulations to Shirl Dickey, owner/driver of CJ60, for winning the American Power Boat Assn Comp Jet class High Points Championship. He has earned the right to have the US#1 on his Rogers in 2016. Not too shabby for using small block power !

Boat Racing / Idaho Regatta 2015 Comp Jet Videos
« on: July 03, 2015, 11:15:05 AM »
Thanks to fisherman Ken for the on shore videos and Ballinjack crewman Rick for the in boat vid. We might have had more of those but the Go-Pro now sleeps with the fishes! Here we go (crank up your volume).....

Saturday morning Heat #1 taken from shore.

Saturday morning Heat #1 taken from in the boat.
I guess it would be helpful if I explained what you are seeing in this vid. The GoPro was mounted on top of the engine air box, aiming out the left rear of the boat. The video starts with launching the boats and heading out for one complete lap of the course which serves to warm up the engines, acknowledge the crowd with a wave and allow the officials to check that the appropriate boats are indeed on the water. Next, the boats form a line side by side on the back straight with each boat in it's assigned lane (lane assignments are by lottery). Then the line of boats proceeds at medium speed down the back straight about 1/2 mile past the main island and rounds the end of another island onto the front straight. As the boats approach the course from the second island, the officials look for an even and fair alignment. When they are satisfied, the green flag waves, starting the race. Four laps later the checkered flag flies for the winner, but all the boats continue to circle the course until the last place boat crosses the finish line. At that point the black flag flies and everyone returns to their trailer. The actual race is about 3 3/4 minutes of extreme high adrenaline!

Sunday afternoon Heat #2 (final) taken from shore.

Boat Racing / Jet boat race about 1972 Lake Casitas MJ class
« on: January 14, 2015, 10:00:29 PM »
This video opens with the aftermath of the Comp Jet race where George "Honker" Striegal (of Clay Smith Cams) took a swim in the "No Body Contact" drinking water Lake Casitas.

The Mod Jet race action was shot from the patrol boat in the first turn of the triangular course. I can only identify two of the six boats for certain. The first is the dark colored Southwind with the co-rider sitting high on the gunnel. That is the Hardin Marine factory Southwind/Olds/Jacuzzi, #455, "Nice-N-Easy" driven by Hardin boss Barry Lieberman. The boat could run with many of the Chevys. The other recognizable boat is running dead last - #727, the Rogers/Chevy/Berk of Steve King. This must have been one of the first races for Steve and his bubble deck Rogers. Once Steve got the hang of driving and got the Rogers dialed in, he won many, many races. Do you think that having Jeff Bennett on his team had anything to do with it?

Plenty of spinners in this race!

Boat Racing / Jet boats race 1972 Bluewater SJ & MJ-CJ LeMans starts
« on: January 14, 2015, 09:09:55 PM »
I'm not sure about the date or the sponsoring club for these two races.
The video is noteworthy (in spite of the shaky camera work) for the cool modified LeMans starts and the clearly visible Ski Jet #30, a copper colored Kona/Olds owned & driven by none other than Bill Scotten. This is one of his earliest circle races, long before he started California Performance Jet Boats. Also recognizable in the SJ race is the yellow w/ red cap 17ft Hornet of Bill Pratt and the white w/ red & blue cap 16ft Rogers of Jeff Paine.
In the MJ-CJ race I won the 1st couple of laps in the white Hondo #123 while Jim Youngblood #320 runs a close 2nd. Phil Trichler #294 gets a bad start and chases. After several laps I seemed to have disappeared, Youngblood leads and Trichler moves to 2nd. Just before the finish, Youngblood DNFs and Phil T wins (I think).

Boat Racing / Jet boat race 6-6-1971 Lake Casitas, Ojai, CA
« on: January 13, 2015, 10:14:24 PM »
In the 70's jets circle raced with the California OutBoard Racing Assn (COBRA) once every month, year around. There were three events each summer (Jun, Jul, Aug) at Lake Casitas near Ojai in the mountains above Ventura. (This venue was used for the Olympic rowing events at the last Los Angeles Olympics). The course was a large triangle, probably 1.5 to 2 mi around. You did not want to sink there, as the water was 175 ft deep in places. This video shows the Comp Jets, Ski Jets and one class of outboards in the same race. The races were timed events, with this one probably about 20 minutes long.

The races had a pace boat start, where a large white flag was held up while the racers chose lanes and lined up to the outside of the pace boat. Watch the video closely and you can see that when most of the boats were lined up, the flag dropped (far right) and the Comp Jets pulled away.

The 1st lap leader is Phil Trichler (CJ294), followed by Ron Esposito (CJ309) (in his 16.5 ft Rogers drag boat, "Uncle Sam"). Then Jeff Paine (SJ277), Jim Youngblood (CJ320) and Chuck Collins (CJ401) give chase. Before long, Youngblood moves up to 2nd place for a while but he and Esposito appear to drop out. Trichler, in a Lightning/Southwind wins CJ with Collins (Weiman 18) 2nd. Paine (Rogers 16.5) wins Ski Jet.

Pay close attention to Trichler's boat just past the halfway point of the video. This move would have most guys stopping to change their shorts, but Phil just kept the hammer down.

Boat Racing / Comp Jet race at Salton Sea 1-23-1972
« on: December 19, 2014, 06:38:48 PM »
This race combined Comp Jets and Mod Jets. The Mod Jets were limited to 480 cu in, headers, one 4 barrel carb & no droop. They were often Ski Jets that just swapped their log exhaust for headers. Comp Jets of that era were similar to today's rules except that the displacement was limited to 500 inches. Most ran 468 to 475 because it was an affordable combo. The jets had loaders and up-dn nozzles but cav plates were very rare. I can't recall any ride plates or turn fins.

In the race, Bill Pratt (#454) wins the start and the 1st turn, but Phil Trichler (#294) eventually runs him down and takes the lead. Then Jack McClure (#123) overtakes Phil for a while. Phil regains the lead with Jack chasing on his inside. When the checkered flag comes out, the two are very close. The video runs out before the finishline but I think I won by virtue of the inside lane advantage. 4th went to John Goddard in the MJ #214. Check out the turns by these Southwind style hulls that have no fin to help.

Boat Racing / Ski Jet race at Salton Sea 1-23-1972
« on: December 19, 2014, 05:53:29 PM »
We used to race at Salton Sea (sometimes known as Salton Sewer) once or twice a year. This video is an early morning combined race with SkiJets and some outboards. The SkiJets were required to use aluminum log exhausts with all of the engine cooling water exiting out the exhaust tip. They were limited to 460 cu in, no droop snoots or diverters, offset steering & thru hull fuel fills. Riders were optional but very common.

The two main players in this race were Bill Pratt in a 17ft Hornet (yellow #454) and Jeff Paine in a 16.5ft Rogers (white #277). Both hull designs have a deep entry so the boats really carve a turn. Jeff wins, Bill is 2nd and 3rd goes to #95 (an Avenger hull, I think). Duration of the race was probably about 15-20 minutes and the course was a triangle, about 1.5 miles around.

Boat Racing / Jet boat drag racing at Lake Ming 10-3-1970
« on: December 19, 2014, 04:16:57 PM »
This video opens with the smiling faces of Phil Trichler and his crewman, Mike Snow. Then a little beach viewing.

In the early days at Ming a class of boats would be put in the water well before their call and they waited on the beach. When called, they motored to the holding rope at the far east end of the lake. Most did a hard burnout on the way to the rope in order to get some heat in the motor.

The boats I recognize are:
277 Jeff Paine - ?/Chevy/Berk
294 Phil Trichler - Kona/Chevy/Berk
309 Ron Esposito - Rogers/Chevy/Berk
320 Jim Youngblood - Lightning/Chevy/? (maybe Jacuzzi)
401 Chuck Collins - Weiman/Chevy/Berk

People on the beach include Marion Davy and the late Al Veto. Please feel free to comment if you recognize any boats or people.

Boat Racing / Jet boat race - early 1973 at Long Beach Marine Stadium
« on: December 19, 2014, 03:23:37 PM »
The original 8mm films seen here belong to my old racing buddy Phil Trichler who raced with NJBA in the 70's. I had his 25+ reels of film converted to digital format some years ago with the intention adding titles, driver names, boat brands, etc., but that turned out to be too much work. So, instead, you get to see the raw video and I'll just fill in here what little I can remember of the events.

This race was from the days when there was about four circle races a year at LBMS. This event had two qualifying heats and a main event for jets.
The boats that I recognize now are:
022 Ron Maul - Horizon/Chevy/Berk
123 Jack McClure & Phil Trichler - Hondo/Chevy/Bayjet
454 Bill Pratt & Ken Elliot - Sleekcraft/Chevy/Jacuzzi
712 Craig Millet & Craig Peterson - Weiman (Rogers)/Chevy/Berk
727 Steve King - Rogers/Chevy/Berk

Steve King won the 1st heat. I won the 2nd heat. And Steve appears to be winning the main, but the video ends before the heat does.
BTW, no one ever complained about the size of your rooster.....

Boat Racing / Jet Boat race 10-18-1970 at Big Bend
« on: December 18, 2014, 05:10:49 PM »
This video is made from 8mm film taken on 10-18-1970 at Big Bend on the Colorado River. There is no sound. Note that Buckskin Park in undeveloped.

The start is modified LeMans with drivers sitting at the wheel. The boats were divided into two classes  - Ski Jet (log manifolds & exhaust water) and Unlimited jet (any mods). A 468 was a big engine and the fast guys went about 80.
The early leader of the race is Ron Esposito in a 16 1/2 ft Rogers #309. Another fast guy is Jim Youngblood in the laydown, Lightning hull #320. Both of those guys breakdown and the win goes to Phil Trichler in an 18 Kona with co-rider Mike Snow. The duration of the race was about 20 minutes. Note the victory "spin" (long before Nascar guys did it).

The last part of the video shows Jets drag racing at Long Beach Marine Stadium. Note that the boats ran both directions. The video is too grainy to identify the boats.

Boat Racing / San Diego $500 Challenge
« on: September 10, 2012, 11:04:15 AM »
Greetings Comp Jet class racers. As the season winds down I want to say Thanks to all of you guys who welcomed our team to the APBA sprint racing events, particularly those classy individuals who spread the rumors that we are running an illegal engine.

After the San Diego race “the engine” will return to its former life powering Tom Bandy’s Hallett ski boat on the River. That means you guys only have one chance left to file a REAL protest against the engine’s displacement.

For those of you who just KNOW we are cheating, but the protest fee is holding you back, let me sweeten the pot for you. File your protest, and when the APBA Tech Inspector comes to our pit, I will hand him $500 cash to be awarded to the protestor if the Inspector declares our engine to be over the 515 cu in limit. Of course, per APBA 2012 IE Racing Rule 10.4, you lose your $250 protest fee if we are under the 515 cu in limit.

You can double your investment!! Go for it.
