Engine Mechanical / Electrical / New build disappointment
« on: May 21, 2014, 04:12:29 PM »
So I took the new combo to the lake today for some test and tune. I'm hugely disappointed in the performance. Maybe a few of you experts here can look at the details and tell me where I went wrong with my recipe for big power and better than stock speed.

I spent a couple hours on the lake today doing carb tuning. I swapped jets about 6 times. I've been from 86 squared to 80 squared with no change in max rpm. none. zero. When I got down into the 70's, 76 exactly, It started to ping, So I went back up from there.

Engine: 521 Ford - Eagle rotation assy 4.3 Steel crank Mahle pistons 38cc dish final CR approx 9.75:1
Heads :D0VE C , mild port work.
Cam: In 345 Exh 359 at cam  duration Int 228 Exh 238 max lift at intake occurs at 109 degrees ATDC and at exhaust 119 degrees BTDC - Hydraulic roller
Comp gold roller rockers 1.7 ratio
Intake: Stealth
Carb: Holley 850 HP Ultra jetted at 84 square.  4.5 power valves front and rear.
Fuel system: Holley blue pump and regulator 6psi
Dist: Summit billet mechanical.  Timing is set to 36 degrees all in at 3400
Exhaust: Harman Marine Long bolt logs.

Drive: Berkeley 12JG
Bowl: Dominator HD
Impeller: Dominator skirted AA cut
Place diverter

Boat: 21' Eliminator Sport Cruiser. No interior. 20 gallons of fuel. 2 people.

Performance:  4500 RPM  and 58 mph  @ 4100 feet altitude here.

According to the Berkely chart I'm making a whopping 325 HP. Sweet.  I could have done that with a stock 460 and saved THOUSANDS.

Help? Advice? Suggestions?

Projects / 1977 Eliminator 20.5 Sport Cruiser

Well guys, I'm new here and thought I would share my recent project with the masses. I'm not a "hey look at me" kinda guy, I'm more of a "hey look what you could do too" kinda guy.
I'd like to share my updated boat to help motivate some of you that are thinking about doing something similar.

So much for the disclaimer.  ;)

I purchased my Eliminator in '96 to help me get over a recent divorce. The boat was old, worn but still ran good and had some potential. I enjoyed the boat as it was for 8 years, each year promising myself that NEXT year I would do some much needed updates, but each year as the winter snow melted, and boating season arrived I said hell with it, I'm going boating.... and put the update off until NEXT year.
Finally in 2006 I decided that I HAD to freshen up the engine. It was nearly THIRTY years old and still running. I averaged probably 1 or 2 days a week on the water from May through Sept. By now even though the engine fired every time, and wasn't using oil or making any ugly noises, it seemed to struggle to pull 4000 RPM on the Berkley JG-A pump.

SO in 2006 I pulled the motor and took it to my Fav local engine builders, C&T machine.  Bart and Rod are the owners, and they are responsible for helping My dear friend Lance Faulkner build some record setting engines.

I asked C&T to freshen up the 460, and add a little fire to it, but make it as reliable as a stone. I wanted it to run for at least another 10 years. They took the block to .060 over with TRW forged dished pistons, added some mildly worked over D0VE-C heads, a Ford Motorsport hydraulic flat tappet cam and topped it off with a Weiand Stealth and a 750 Double pumper.

So boating I went again. The interior had LONG since gone bad. There were holes worn in the carpet, the seat vinyl was faded, stained and split in several places. Each year I promised myself, THIS year I will do the upholstery....

In 2012 I received a sizable tax return. I filed early, and saw my money in March 2012. THIS year I am updating my boat and building the upholstery that I always wanted. I will get it done BEFORE boat season in Utah arrives.

This is where the pictures will start.

I believe this pic to be from '01 and in the all original condition that I had ran it from '96 to '06:

and one more, just because:

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Exhaust Question
« on: April 14, 2014, 06:53:21 PM »
New member here, I've lurked for a while and there is some real knowlegable and talented folks here.
So here's my question. I'm building a new engine. A 521 Ford. Budget constraints forces me to continue using log style manifolds. The manifolds that I have are the stock Hardin Marine 'long bolt' style manifolds. I also have a set of the Glenwood short bolt manifolds available to me. I'm curious if anyone knows which  one of these 2 turds performs better than the other. The Glenwoods have a larger outlet.
