Project Boats For Sale / Another Spectra 20 Project
« on: March 17, 2010, 02:13:52 PM »
What are your thought?

A buddy of mine has a friend who is selling a mid 70's spectra 20 cruiser. Orig. gel in great condition. Has freshly painted trailer with new tires. A Berkeley Jet with hydraulic diverter, all wiring, gauges...everything minus the engine. Interior needs replacing as well. My buddy thinks he'll take a grand for it. Should I jump on it?

Jet Pumps / Manual to Hydraulic Conversion kit?
« on: February 27, 2010, 06:24:37 PM »
I'm looking to swap in a hydraulic diverter unit in place of my manual. Does anyone know how much a kit like this costs? I thought I saw them advertised on JBP but can't seem to find them now.

I know where a spectra 20 (listed as a 21) is locally and was wondering what you guys think. It seems to be in good condition. 460 ford that was rebuilt 3 years ago..interior new 3 years ago as well. Engine runs great...but the guy says the pump wont pump (he states that his friend took it out and doesn't know what happened, the pump just wouldn't pump). He lives about an hour away and was wondering what you guys thought before I went up to look at it. The boats only $2100 obo!! He'll take $1800 for it. Whats your thoughts??

The No Wake Zone / This site is consuming my life...
« on: August 19, 2009, 10:12:33 PM »
I just had an epiphany......I have been spending more time on this site than I've been on the lake! I've probably read nearly every post ever created on this site and it seems to be taking over my life. Hell, I could have completely stripped, painted and re-carpeted my trailer with all the time I've spent on this site lately. I just have one question: what's up with all the gay talk that seems to consume this site?

Gelcoat / Paint / Fireberglass Repair / Heavy Oxidation Water Line
« on: August 19, 2009, 09:50:54 PM »
Alright guys, heres the deal. The guy I purchased my boat from was the second owner and only had the boat about a year before selling it to me. The orig. owner kept the boat on a private dock on a private lake the majority of the year for the first few years he had it. The guy barely used it and it just sat there! There is a distinct water line that has turned part of the orig. navy blue gelcoat a baby blue color. When I run my finger over the water line, there is a layer of "scum"  that has covered the orig gelcoat.
I called a buddy who works for 3m marine tech and he said that its a "heavy oxidation" which is caused from sitting in the water for a long duration of time. He recommended I use a specialized imperial rubbing compound of theirs with a 100% wool pad. He says it is designed for removing 600-800 grit sand paper swirls from gel-coats. He then told me to use a high quality wax to follow up on. It should be here Friday so I'll post a few pictures of before and after. I really hope it works.
Also, I have another paint/gelcoat issue that I will address as soon as I try and solve this one. Hopefully one of you guys can lend a few ideas.
Anybody ever gone through a process like this?

Central Valley / Millerton Vs. Bass Lake?
« on: August 18, 2009, 09:42:43 PM »
Hey guys,
Planning on a week long vacation at one of these two lakes. I'll be heading up there next Tuesday and was wondering what the water levels are like at each? I have never been to either...probably hit up both but was wondering if anyone has been up recently and has a preference. Any pictures would also be greatly appreciated. -CenCalCruiser

Boats For Sale / Clean 21' DayCruiser
« on: August 11, 2009, 05:47:10 PM »
I was just offered $5500.00 for my 1974 Cheyenne 21' DayCruiser. It has the original 455 olds (All stock minus carb rebuild and hei ignition) with a berkeley jet and manual diverter-jetavator. Engine/Jet both run great! All new wood flooring and seat frames with ALL new interior and side panels. New pioneer stereo with (4) 6.5" speakers (Sounds Great). Everything works (minus tach-hasn't been hooked up since hei was installed) Orig. gelcoat in good shape. HAS A TON OF ROOM under the front of the boat (the ol lady and I have slept under it a few times). Surge Brake tandem trailer with great tires on it! Turn key boat that is very RELIABLE! Woodgrain that wraps around boat is in perfect condition (have never seen another boat with the org. woodgrain in such good shape). Beautiful boat.
I'm not in a hurry to sell it...I just told the guy I'd think about it and let him know. What do you guys think? How much would you pay for it?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Ticking/Tapping in SBC
« on: August 08, 2009, 08:20:43 PM »
Not boat related but maybe you guys can lend a few ideas...
I have a '64 chevelle with a sbc 350. The motor came out out of a '93 suburban that my father and I tore down and rebuilt. Only modifications made was an edelbrock performer cam, edelbrock performer rpm heads, 1.6 roller rockers, rpm air gap manifold etc etc. We have built several motors without any issues; however, this time we're baffled! We broke the motor in @ 2k for 20 min, changed oil and everything seemed fine for the first 500 miles. Then the motor developed a slight lifter-sounding tap that would come on and off. Things we have done: rechechecked rocker arm torque, thought maybe we had a collapsed lifter so we replaced and broke in once more, changed out rocker arms. The tap seems to be coming from the back of my motor and seems to be more noticable when hot and and over 14-1500 rpm. I called edelbrock and the first thing they asked was if I had the hardened pushrods that were .0100 longer....yes I do have em!

A few other things that I have not checked that could I suspect could be screwed up: bent or cracked flexplate, stripped distributor gear. I made plexiglass valvecovers and each side is getting plenty of oil being pumped up. Very good oil pressure. What do you think it could be? It sounds like a lifter tap but the rocker arms are fine when I check it. Also, it's not a simple exhaust leak!

Boat Showcase / My Jet Boat Pics
« on: May 26, 2009, 08:52:28 PM »
Just want to stop in and introduce myself. I'm 22 years old and live in the central valley. I live about 10 mins away from Lake Success and have grown up on the lake. The yellow/white/woodgrain boat was the first boat I had ever purchased. I bought in when I was 19 years old from my dads mechanic buddy. It had a built 550hp ford 460 with a berkeley jet and hydraulic jetovator. The boat was a 1978 Frahs 20' mini day cruiser. The boat was fast.....
I was forced to sell the boat last summer since funds were running low and I needed the cash to pay for college tuition. Now I'm close enough to graduating that I could safely buy another. So, after months of searching (and after looking at probably 40 different boats) I found the one! The white/blue/woodgrain 1974 21' Cheyenne DayCruiser is my new toy! The org. paint is in great shape, the woodgrain looks brand new, hull is sound, and top of the boat doesn't have a single stress crack. Its powered by an org. 455 olds with a berkeley jet and manual divertor. It also has a brand new floor, new seating arrangement with all new wood/carpet/upholstery etc. I couldn't be happier with it. Runs and looks awesome! I haven't had a chance to take pics yet but I do have the pics the previous owner sent to me.
I'll post current and better pics soon! I'm heading to the lake tomorrow with a buddy....and filling the remaining four seats up with a few of the ladies  8)
