Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Bad idle, and down 500 rpm at WOT
« on: June 11, 2019, 06:38:03 PM »
I have a bad cold idle, and am down about 500rpm, and 10mph at WOT. I do not have a check valve on my Holley 750carb, and have had this issue before, but always had a friend that recently passed on take care of my carb...so I just dropped it off, and got it back- never knowing what was done to it.
Do these symptoms seem like something a blown power valve would cause?
No other changes have been made to the boat.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / card problem?...I think
« on: July 22, 2013, 05:43:17 PM »
What does it mean when fuel keeps running out of the carb (into engine) after the engine is shut off? Plus, engine is loading up at idle, and misses and sometimes even dies due to flooding out. On a side note...it runs better and faster than ever at higher RPM. Have made no changes at all...problem comes and goes, but is getting worse. sometimes gas will run out the tailpipes.

Jet Pumps / New way to damage jet drive...to me at least
« on: July 09, 2013, 08:07:27 PM »
So...I ran my boat about 350 feet into 3" deep water on saturday. It killed the motor and all, and took the usuall effort of pushing a 3000lb boat off of a sandbar. After cleaning out the sand from the controls, and as much as I could from the pump, and a very hard start-up the boat seemd to run pretty much like normal...for about a mile or two.  Then, it started getting "hot", and started to lose enough thrust to come off of plane. I pulled over, and pulled what looked like a bunch of tire tube, or some other rubber of some sort out of the pump. After that, it ran pretty decent, and was no longer overheating. Decided to take it home for the day. Took it out again two days later, and it just did not take off as well as it should have, and was also running about 2-300 RPM higher than normal at all speeds. Also was told by onlookers that it was not shooting as big of a rooster tail as normal. Took it apart tonight, and found that the wear ring was fused to the impeller, and the insulator was totally missing. I guess the sand jammed tight enough in the gap to lock the two pieces together, and spin the wear ring in the insulator...destroying it. That would also expain the very hard start after the crash. I am suprised the boat ran as well as it did in this condition! So... I dont have a new insulator, but I do have an old one that seems to be in usable condition, so I am planning to just put that one back in, and try it. I want the boat running this weekend pretty bad because my 9 year old has her heart set on learning to ski this weekend. There is absolutly no place here in Wisconsin to get a new insulator that soon, so I am crossing my fingers that the old one will work!

Jet Pumps / Just rebuilt pump...
« on: May 19, 2013, 06:51:48 AM »
Just put in a new aluminum "A" impeller, wear ring, and seals/bearings. Boat had a "A" impeller before as well. Boat runs about the same top speed, with alot better launch, and way less cavitation. Only issue is it knocked my peak RPM's down by 1000. For the record...It runs 55@4000 RPM- it used to run that speed at 5000 RPM. Engine it a 468 chevy, nothing special, just domed pistons, shaved heads, and decked block. According to the BERKELY HP vs. IMPELLER chart, I am only making 200 HP! It was rated at 360 stock.  Not sure about cam specs. Kind of dissapointed that my engine is not making the power to turn the new impeller any faster, but I am happy with the lower RPM, and less noise that goes with it.  Boat is a heavy BAJA, that is used to take the kids along, tube, and mostly just run around shooting big rooster tails, so it does not really need to be any faster.    Just wondering if there is usually that much of an RPM drop going from a "old worn out" pump, to a "new, tight" pump. Either way...boat performs better, at lower RPM's, so I guess I should be happy!

Jet Pumps / What should bowl vanes look like?
« on: May 12, 2013, 09:30:33 AM »
I finally tore apart my 84 berk JF pump! I'm doing an impeller/wear ring, bushings and seals...not front bearing at this time. Impeller front edges were OK, rear edges were bent, cracked, and one had a decent size piece missing. The leading edges of the bowl vanes are nicked up a little, but no big dings, or chunks missing. My question is "how should I file them?" I have seen some people put a "flat" edge on them, but I thought I would just "take out the nicks" so the edges were smooth, and leave the basic rounded vane edges the way they are. For the most part, the vanes are not too bad compared to pics or others I have seen...I just want to dress them up, but not screw up anything! I cannot post pics, but mabe a pick of what a used, cleaned up, bowl should look like would be helpfull. Thanks in advance!

So, I almost always put the charger on my battery for a while before I take out the boat---1 battery, alot of sitting around with the radio on. Today, it was totally dead when I put the charger on,--like dash lights don't come on "dead"  I took off the positive battery cable, and put a volt meter between it and the battery, and it was showing full battery voltage. It showed no amp draw. I did unhook the radio so the clock, and memory were not drawing any voltage, and of course had the key off. I started to narrow down systems that could be shorting out by totally disconecting them one at a time. I found that the alternator seems to be what it shorting out, and draining the battery,--I THINK. It still makes power like it should when it is running for the reccord.  My question is... do they go bad like this?-
by bad I mean an internal short?  How would one test for this before replaceing the whole thing?---and will a regular automotive alternator work instead of a higher priced marine one?  Thanks in advance!

Projects / Looking for BAJA bilge vents
« on: July 15, 2012, 04:10:06 PM »
Long story short, Tried teaching my wife how to drive the boat, and now I need a new bilge vent. >:(----NO OTHER DAMAGE!!!! :D    The boat is a 84 BAJA 200ss. Any ideas on where to get one like the one that came with the boat? I am not to hopefull, and will proubly just end up getting 2 new ones so they match.

Jet Pumps / nozzle angle questions
« on: May 20, 2012, 07:36:31 PM »
Just wondering how much downward angle is enough, or too much?  I have a JE pump with Trim A Just, and it has been modified by grinding the steering knuckle, and the reverse bucket as much as possible to throw the biggest roostertail possible.  However, with the cables being long enough to get the nozzle up as high as it will go, it also gives it more downward travel as well. I have not put any kind of angle meter on it, but it aims way down from shooting straight out the back.  I am just wondering how others set up the "low" angle and if to much is a bad thing.

Got the boat out for the first time this season and it ran perfect! Then it wouldn't start after pulling the kids around in the tube. Turns out it was just the starter solenoid. Don't know why it went bad, but it was most likely 28 years old-like the rest of the boat. The only changes to the boat over the winter was that all of the wire and terminals from the battery were replaced with welding cable instead of the 4 gauge that was on it before,-so the solenoid got more amperage than it ever has before.

Jet Pumps / Stuffer plate questions???
« on: March 22, 2012, 07:07:30 PM »
What can I expect from a stuffer plate? Boat has a JE-A pump with trim a just. My boat is big, and heavy, and tends to cavitate when launching, or pulling up skiiers. From what I have read, a stuffer plate is most helpfull for improving holeshot, so it seems like it may be something that could help my boat out. The pump has not had a wear ring or impeller  replaced for many hours, but is in good shape otherwise...No front or rear shaft leaks, and all the nylon bushings are tight. I don't plan on doing a full re-build for this season, and don't have a good reason to take the pump apart unless I can gain something with a stuffer.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / my boat never started very well...
« on: March 11, 2012, 07:33:22 PM »
My boat never starts very well, especially when it is hot. It is a  bbc, and I only run one battery.  One thing I noticed is that all of the wire from the battery, and solonoid to starter was only #4 heavy strand wire, with some really light wieght ends/terminals. So, today I replaced all of the wire with 2-0 welding cable, and super heavy duty ends. It is still winter here in Wisconsin, but I did dry fire the boat to see if the new wire helped. All I can say is WOW! the motor crancks over like never before. All the new wire is so heavy that it wil proubly slow down the boat, but It sure will be nice haveing it turn over properly instead of barely even being able to spin the motor at all.

Jet Pumps / Berk JE-A nozzle O-ring question
« on: October 16, 2011, 06:29:44 PM »
I have an "84" Berkeley JE-A, that has no O-ring on the nozzle at all. I thought it was just missing at first, but after tearing it apart, there is no groove, or any provisions of any kind for an O-ring. There seems to be alot of water getting out around the nozzle-as viewed by hanging off the back of the boat at speed, and when short line skiing behind the boat. Is this just part of the deal with a JE pump? Or am I missing something. There is a video of the boat on YouTube under "baja jet boat fly by" that shows the roost with the diverter about 3/4 of the way up. The water flow is not as "directed" as some that I have seen, and seems to have alot of thrust kind of going all over the place. Maybe it is OK, but let me know what you think.  Other than that, the pump could use a rebuild pretty bad, but I just haven't done it yet. The boat performs OK, but the worn pump shows up when pulling up skiers.

Boat Showcase / Finally got some video of my boat!
« on: July 30, 2011, 08:08:27 PM »
Well after a year and a half of owning my BAJA, My daughter finally caught my boat on video---passing her in another boat today. I am pretty computer illiterate, so I have never been able to figure out how to get pics, or vids on to this site. Leave it to the kids I guess! Anyway, she is going to put it on YouTube under "BAJA jet boat fly by" Should be up pretty soon. The boat is a 20' BAJA 200 SS, with a BBC, and JE pump, and modifyed Berkely TRIM A JUST

The No Wake Zone / A Jetboat it was not
« on: July 07, 2011, 06:43:57 PM »
Just went for a ride in my friends new (to us) Crownline 18' bowrider. It is a 190HP 4.3liter.  It goes 48 with both of us in it, and pulls really good out of the hole. It does everything well, has tons of room, and cost less than my BAJA JET. I hate to say it, but my wife and kids would dump our "JET" in half a heartbeat for a boat like this. The only thing I don't like is that it is so quiet at idle that it is actually hard to tell if it is running or not. And, even at full trim, the roost is so tiny that it seems like somthing is wrong.  I have loved jet boats since I was a little kid, and still do. But, I can already see the writing on the wall. Once my family starts spending time in the Crownline, my jet boating days are soon to be over.

Jet Pumps / My TRIM A JUST MOTOR is dead
« on: July 02, 2011, 10:00:49 PM »
Where do I get a new motor assembly for a TRIM A JUST settup?  The Berkeley website says it is no longer availible.  I would also consider going to a manual settup, and just getting rid of the TRIM A JUST all together. I don't know if I can do that with my JE pump, but I would if I can. Until then, I "need" a new motor asembly, so any help would be great! Thanks, Rick

Jet Pumps / Tube'n problem
« on: June 11, 2011, 09:22:15 PM »
Well, I took the kids tube'n for the first time this year, and it went pretty well. The boat pulls well, and has a nice wake. I did spray one kid with the diverter a little bit, but he cried, and wouldn't talk for a while, so I will likely only do that to adults from now on. Only bad thing that happened was the entire 75 foot rope got sucked into the pump while ideling, and took about an hour to cut it all out through the hand hole. Now I have a whole bunch of 6 inch to 12 inch pieces of ski rope! Anybody else ever do this???

Projects / Bigger Rooster tail for JE-A pump
« on: May 05, 2011, 08:07:37 PM »
I just got done modifying my JE reverse bucket, and steering housing a bit to allow the diverter to angle up a whole bunch more. I ground the steering housing where it says "BERKELEY" in the casting up about half way through the letters so the nozzle could go up higher. then I had to grind a notch out of the top of the reverse bucket so it would clear the steering housing when trimmed all the way up. I also "MAXXED OUT" my diverter, and bucket cables for as much trim as possble. All said in done, the nozzle angle can now go up about triple what it did in stock form. The material I removed was not structurally critical, but to go any further would require major grinding, and would possibly weaken the steering, and reverse bucket structures to a point that would make them unreliable. I don't have exact angle measurments that I gained but it will definitly shoot up a really big roost now.---It was pretty good before, but "what the hell"  Anyways, if anybody else wants a bigger roost on a JE/JF pump, this works pretty good.

Jet Pumps / Front pump seal material questions
« on: May 04, 2011, 06:53:10 PM »
Can I use regular graphite impregnated pump shaft seal rope instead of the stuff you get right from Berkeley, or other aftermarket places?
I already have some, and don't want to pay the $15 bucks Berkeley throws on to every order----even if it is literally just "one" screw, or nylon bushing.
Also, do I have to cut it into 5 pieces, and overlap the seams, or can I just wrap a long piece around the shaft a few times, and tighten it up like that? Thanks in advance!

Trailers / Trailer bunk carpet ??
« on: April 24, 2011, 08:02:34 PM »
My trailer needs new bunks. Can I just cover the new bunks with Astro Turf/ indoor outdoor carpet? Or, do I need something special?

Long story short, my boat is the only jetboat around here, and is way, way louder than anything else around here. People have come over to the house to complain about it.
I saw a video on youtube with what appears to be 4" PVC 90 degree elbows clamped on to the exhaust tips, pointed down. They appear to quiet the boat down a great deal. Anybody ever do this? I am a plumber, and have everything to do this, and they would be super east to remove for the times I want the boat loud. I don't think they would create any backpressure, other than when the boat is idleing and the tips were totally under water. Seems like a cheap, and easy way to quiet down the boat, and keep peace on the lake. Also, the D.N.R. are really dinks about things like loud boats around here, so it may keep them off my butt too.

Hulls / Found some "TRAPPED" water in my boat!
« on: April 06, 2011, 07:16:40 PM »
Well, actually I found some ice under the floor, as it is still winter around here. I was crawling under the boat to look at what I needed to replace the trailer bunks, and noticed the hull was "sweating"  My boat is an 84 BAJA SPORT 200, that sat outside year round for some time before I got it, and everything in it was saturated when I got it. I replaced the entire interior, including all the wood, and that got rid of a ton of extra water weight. However, BAJA encases the entire floor, and everything else in fiberglass, so there is no way to get under the floor to see if any water is down there. Long story short, I had an extra access hole cover, so I drilled a hole in the floor under the rear seat, and found some water, and ice. I shop vacced out all the water, but the spray in foam they use for floatation is totally soaked, and is actually frozen at this time. I have an old computer fan sitting over the hole I drilled blowing air in to thaw out the ice, and hopefully dry things out. The question I have is... Can the spray in floatation be dried out? or does it hold water forever once it gets wet? It is just barely springtime here, and all the lakes are still frozen, and the boat won't be getting wet for at least another month. Can I just let my fan settup run for a month, and dry out the foam under the floor, or do I need to scrape it all out, and  replace it?  As I said, I have alot of time to leave the fan on, so I really just need to know if the floatation foam can be saved, or if it will hold water forever?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Fuel supply line size?
« on: March 28, 2011, 06:48:39 PM »
My question is pretty much, Is a 3/8 rubber line from the tank to the pump,-9 feet, limiting my fuel supply at high rpm? Boat is a high compression 454, with a 750 holley. Top rpm is about 47-4800, and it just feels like the motor has more in it, but just can't rev up any more.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / How to grease u- joints?
« on: November 14, 2010, 08:17:20 PM »
I am assuming that you should grease the u-joints between the engine flywheel, and the pump. Is that what the access cover on the belhousing is for? Do the joints have grease zerks? Or, do they just last forever with the factory grease?

Jet Pumps / Pump rebulders in wisconsin????????????
« on: November 14, 2010, 06:34:39 PM »
Does anybody in southern/central Wisconsin rebuild pumps? I have a 12JE, that I understand is not meant to be removed from the hull, so shipping it out is not an option. I have been reading many posts on this sight, and have decided that replacing a wear ring, and impeller is above my abillities, due to the precision required to install the wear ring, and set the gap. Is there anybody out there where I can just drop the boat off, and write them a check? I can pull the motor out myself to make the pump work more easy, or do you not need to pull the pump shaft out to change the impeller/wear ring? Any help would be great! Thanks
