Jet Pumps / Ride plate and shoe

I'd like to install a ride plate and shoe on my 18' Tahiti , I'm running a Berk pump with a split "B" bowl and it's not a set back if that helps also a droop and place diverter. I've looked at several vendors and have seen some "adapt a plate" offerings that state you don't have to remove the intake from the boat to install the shoe and plate.
Any pro's / con's to this or should I just plan to remove the intake and machine (not sure) what machining is required to mount the shoe.
Don't mind the work...just want to do it correctly the first time. If machining is mandatory what exactly is required ~ is the shoe recessed into the intake and thru bolted or is this just a mill a flat and drill and tap deal?
