Jetboat engines are 330HP, most truck engines are in the 245HP range, The cam is much smaller, the valves aren't nearly as good quality, the guide and piston/wall clearances, along with every other clearance in the motor is too tight for marine use. BUT, if it has some miles on it, it may last for a while. If you get greedy and change the cam and intake manifold when you discover that an 18 foot boat usually runs about 45-48 MPH with a stock truck motor, you will break it. Pistons, bearings, and valves in that order will fail. The cash saved by buying something wrong for the purpose and being dissatisfied with the performance is usually waaay offset by the credit card costs to do it right the first time. If you are kidding yourself and know that you probably never will have a good motor, go ahead and use the truck motor, keep in mind that when it fails, you're  probably gonna be looking for an undamaged block and at least one head, and usually a crank too. Then again, whats your installation time worth? Oil, filter and other little stuff? Whats the worry about being stranded out in the middle of the lake worth? Make your decision and live with it. I have about a dozen+ engines come in here per year that were just stuck in boats, the cast pistons explode into gravel in the pan, the rod goes through the block, and the head on that side is junk, got one in here right mow. Moral of the story: if you do this, leave the motor completely stock, keep the timing conservative, and keep the full throttle time to a minimum. P.S. look-up the old HOTBOAT article:"A CAR ENGINE IN A BOAT?" Good luck, you'll need it. TIMINATOR

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Comp Cams
« on: May 11, 2008, 10:58:53 PM »
Comp cams usually have a quicker ramp rate than other cams, that means more power, but more break-in issues too. Break-in happens once, Horsepower is forever. Whatever is worth it for you. Boat pans often are 8,10,or 12 quarts and car pans are usually 4-6 quarts, soooooo the break-in additive bottle is sized for a quantity of oil that is half or two thirds of what you have in your engine. 8quart pan, use two bottles of additive, 12 quart pan, use three. For cam break-in you can use racing oil, marked as "NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE". It has the exterem pressure additive that you need. We like to use it for hydraulic cam applications because it has more anti foamants, it allows the lifters to stay pumped up more and so it is good for a small HP boost.   TIMINATOR

Jet Pumps / Re: HYD PD control
« on: April 03, 2008, 07:36:16 AM »
Move the switch to the side in front of the shifter. Just sit in the boat, let your arm rest on the gunwale where it normally does when you drive, and mount the switch right where your finger tips end up. Its handy and out of the way too. I don't like the wheel mount because if the wind is from the side, you have to steer into it and the button is not where it usually is. With it on the side, its allways in the same place, much cheaper than the curly cord thing too. TIMINATOR

I/O's / Re: Am I the only one???
« on: March 30, 2008, 11:45:44 PM »
If you read the HotBoat Nitrous article from about a year or two ago, that was my motor in the lead photo.  P.S. with the big fogger kit you NEED a progressive controller to keep the initial shock from killing the drive, even with my B-Max.  Probably a good idea with even 150 hp or so...  TIMINATOR

We currently have engines "visiting" from Florida(2), Missouri, Washington state, Nevada, Mexico(2), and quite a few from elsewhere in AZ. Past "visitor engines" from: Oregon, California, Texas, Alabama, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado. Jet pumps also from a whole bunch of places too!  Yours could be next! Pumps usually go by Greyhound bus (way cheaper than UPS), engines by truck. Since I am in Havasu quite often, some peeps pickup/deliver their stuff to me there, or leave it with one of my friends there. Some customers just make it a quick weekend drop off of their engine here, and return with their boat when its finished, we can just set it in for free, and they finish it at home, or we can do a quick installation.  TIMINATOR
