I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around the "roofing Nails" thing. I get it, the logic is VERY clear, and to be perfectly honest, I cannot come up with a reason why not??? Pure genius!

After Pulling the interior , and weighing my 50 hour work weeks , I decided to have a shop do it . I really wanted to do it as I have worked with fiberglass alot when i raced a Class 7 truck . The guy quoted me a grand worst case scenario if he has to replace some stringers .I will stop by tomorrow after work and see what the damage looks like after the floors up . And i will post pics of progress. Thanks

Just my .02.............have the fuel tanks pressure checked as well.......might not have only been water in the bilge or soaked up in the foam...... :-\

There is a thread on that motor! I have no clue on the hp, and i never actually got a good look at the tach, but i believe it was about 57, 5800 rpm, the hull just doesnt seem to handle it well, and it is a very heavy lay up! That is why i am very happy with the numbers we seen this weekend! No rideplate, shoe any of that mumbo jumbo, boat does have a mini droop with 4 degrees of wedge, and a b-cut impeller! Motor is 70 over 454 4 bolt main with heavily ported 990 heads, cam is just above 600 lift, and a solid flat tappet, roller rockers yada yada ya...1050 dominator carb, and 10.3-1 compression! i would probably say when the motor is properly tuned, and im slowly working on it, that it will make north of 500

"North" of 500?? Sounds like Ralphs "60-ish family boat" to me..... :screwy:

Don't let him kid you, 500HP was a LOOOONG ways ago....... >:D

I think my problem might lay int he grounding.  I got spark once I grounded the dizzy to the head with a much shorter ground wire.  I have a single ground wire on the battery going to the engine block.  I feel like I should run another one directly to the starter itself.  Isn't the bellhousing itself aluminum so shouldn't it not be a good conductor? Ill also run a fresh 10 gauge line to the terminal block while i'm at it.  I appreciate all the help guys!!  ;D

Yes, but the bolt goes into the engine block....... :sly:

They are both considered alcohol fuels and are equally abusive to the same materials. Thats why when you go to by gaskets they are labeled as alcohol not ethanol or methanol.

Old School labels G. HP parts industry REALLY need to get with the times........

"Sometimes things that look so similar are actually quite different. This is the case with ethanol and methanol. These two substances not only sound similar, but if you put them in two separate glasses they would also look the same. However, if you did anything else with them, or even came too close to the open glasses, you would soon see that there are some very important differences between ethanol and methanol and that mistaking one for the other can be a fatal mistake."

Methanol is developed for racing, Not the same as for ethanol. It is also used for producing not only beverages, but biodiesel via transesterification reaction."

Methanol burns in air forming carbon dioxide and water:

    "2 CH3OH + 3 O2 → 2 CO2 + 4 H2O"

"One of the potential drawbacks of using high concentrations of methanol (and other alcohols other than ethanol) in fuel is its corrosivity to some metals, particularly aluminium. Methanol, although a weak acid, attacks the oxide coating that normally protects the aluminium from corrosion "

Different stuff dude...........ENTIRELY!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: high rise intake
« on: April 20, 2011, 11:22:10 PM »
Pro Comp bought the rights to use the Professional Products molds for their intake manifolds.  Interestingly enough, those manifolds have been proven to make more horsepower than other USA name brand intakes in at least some instances.  I have put them on several dirt track racing engines that I have built.  I have also put them on a number of boat engines, and never really experienced a problem with fit, sealing or leaking.

One important question that has been left out is what type and size boat is this in, and what rpm range are you running?

The thing is to me, is the cam doesn't seem close to large enough to FULLY support and take advantage of it, and you did NOT mention compression ratio,  but the tunnel will probably perform just fine set up properly with what you have. Not a BBC fan, Barry is more schooled in them than I..............

You hit a fantastic note on the "port matching" part........Tunnel rams depend (and work on) velocity, volume and immediate delivery. Port matching is critical. Gasket matching is one thing, port matching quite another.

You fail to mention your compression ratio, which is a VERY big part on how and why tunnel rams work.  I'm going to guess it's on the very modest side, in which case, with that cam, an 8.5:1 compression ratio, a couple 660 CFM's or bigger on it, doubt seriously you'll see much, if any, of a MPH increase. You WILL see a fuel consumption increase, harder to start, and the plugs should read all over the place.

Just my .02, but yeah, it WILL look cool!

Ray

PS, I'd personally stick with what ya got, and build the engine for your Tunnel later when it's tired, you can afford to, or want to do it right, whichever comes first. I first built Moo with a highly modified RPM intake, 950 CFM carb and mostly blower spec cam (comp cams  OLD Xtreme marine 305) and it ran like a smart child from Neverland......Tunnel upgrade with 750's actually slowed it down, lots of problems, water in the oil...........anyway, turns out, had the manifold milled to fit the engine, PORT matched it, LOT of machine and file work, right 750  marine carbs, added 800 RPM on the boat. And quick? WOW!

before you replace can you at least clean em out and see how they look?

^^^^^what he said.......

If they ain't leakin', they don't need replacin'   ;). We can argue this fiberglass tank issue for 20 or more pages, show link after link, and guess what every new car sold here has in the last 10 or so years? Fiberglass impregnated nylon.......Now I'm not a chemist, but I can bet the compounds are very similar, and molding the things the way they do it using nylon vs resin is MUCH quicker, easier and cheaper...............Not that it has a hugely different composition. Fiberglass resin cannot easily be injection molded is all, and no boat manufacturer ever made tens of thousands of a particular hull to justify making tanks this way.

At the end of the day, clean 'em, keep 'em clean, and replace when/if they ever start leaking..........I know many people running 30+ year old fiberglass tanks and no issues. I know the results of failures on opposites of both scenarios, and me being one of them,   ;)

Ray

PS Marc, it's METHANOL that actually eats up aluminum, plastic and anything else even remotely nearby like the Tasmanian Devil on Ridalin. ETHANOL is what all this Green fuel like E15 and E85 is all about. Two different things entirely.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Mechanical Oil Pressure Lines
« on: April 20, 2011, 09:46:35 PM »
in my mustang i used brake line hose 3-.  i figured if it coudl withstand brake pressure and fluid it would do fine with some oil.

http://www.jegs.com/i/Russell/799/632530/10002/-1

Stand up to the pressure, yes, but brake fluid is completely different than oil. It's organic, for one, and things grow in the stuff, the rubber is a different material all together. Even braided stainless is still rubber hose inside and will fail, and weather check, etc, just the same as rubber eventually. Nylon is one of the best choices, but there is another.

I would run solid S/S tubing, Brad (1/8" if I remember right) and use the same compression fittings used on the nylon crap. Good enough for heavy duty farm/construction equipment, can't imagine a boat having more vibration, flex or abuse than that! In showing people and using for last minute projects here my pop's old JD310 Backhoe that he and I completely tore apart and rebuilt 12 years ago, (it burned up in a barn fire....no not mine, we bought it dirt cheap at auction in that condition) we had picked up a 20' roll of the stuff from the Local John Deere dealer in Niles Ohio.

We used it for not only the oil pressure gauge, but added in a hydraulic pressure gauge with it as well, since we rebuilt the radial piston hydraulic pump ourselves and this was our only way to know if the damn thing was working even close to right. I did, however, use flare fittings and a flaring tool on the hydraulic lines.........Was using the hoe just today, and the pump, and tubing is still holding up to 4500PSI spikes with no leaks!  ;)

I just heard on the news tonight that it takes 4 gallons of regular gas to make one gallon of ethonal...That makes a lot of sence.

Makes perfect sense. The fuel burned in the vehicles to prep, plow and seed the fields. Then fertilize, water and harvest....THEN, mow, mulch or whatever they do and start again.........Not an easy life or business, ask Gord. Not nearly as hard to pump a few barrels of oil from the ground from an already drilled well........... :screwy:

Thing we have here in the US that Gord doesn't is "subsidy programs" where they pay farmers to "not grow" crops, or "not raise pigs" or cows or whatever to control the market pricing and ensure no excesses that we cannot consume or sell. Over acheivers are actually, and severely, penalized, beleive it or not......this is where ethanol comes from. Although all the old programs are still in effect.

Is it stupid? ABSOLUTELY YES!!!

I thought this new President actually addressed this in a pre election speech once and was gonna fix it.... O0 O0

and that thing is FUGLY.   :o

You've seen my boats!  ;) Fits right in!!!

Yes, it's not a tunnel or a hydro (guess theres a reason he didn't have aft pics in the ad). Some sort of strange Hybrid deal and the guy seems to think its the Holy Grail. Showed him what a Hydro really is.......... But it IS unique!!!

I pretty much told him "you keep the jet and the SBC, not even remotely interested in those", and offered him a rediculously low cash in hand price with instructions to bring it to Mom's house for Pops Auction if he thought he could do better than that...............

I'm here another week and a half so we'll see.............

are you guys serious you really eat those things ????????

My late wife turned my kids onto those things! And YES!! Italian dressing and just butter! Actually, Cin would buy the Italian season packets and put the whole packet in the boiling water before the artichokes, along with about a 1/2 cup of olive oil for two of them, four she would probably double all that. Cin was Italian,   ;)

But they ARE good!!!  :P

I have been texting him back and forth all day trying to help...i was gonna help him on thursday, but now i got called into work...he now has a solid spark but no fire...he was using the terminal block to ground the dizzy...and from the terminal block he didnt have a clue where the ground went...i told him i would ground it on the cylinder head...i believe he did and thats when he got spark...also after reading what he is running i dont believe he needs a ballast...im sure you guys can shed some light on that...right now i told him to bypass it but no fire...plug gap is at 44...im thinking as of now it might just be a timing thing...

Again?  :screwy: I run all Mallory, no Ballast required (Or wanted) with a Hyfire. I would assume MSD is the same.

I'm with Pat tho. I put 3 grounds on my boats. One to a bellhousing bolt, one to a starter bolt, and one to the terminal block, and also ground the ignition directly to the block as well. I think on Moo I actually did it at the VC bolt.  ;)

Ray

PS, good spark, no fire and timing somewhat near to close to correct (Or even backfires if 180* out).........is he getting spark when cranking the thing or just when turned on?  :sly: Wouldn't be the first time I've had this happen with a bad ignition switch (Moo..... :banghead:) or a bad starter solenoid.......(Every other Ferd product I've ever had......)
