This is good advise right here ^^^^.  I've also had conversations with Greg Shoemaker about the 18' Southwinds.  Like Jake say's, these are ski boats by design. You don't always want to remove all the hook out of the bottom.  Your best bet is to get your info from people who really understand how these hulls work, what hardware works, and what doesn't. In my book,  that would be Chris Starkweather @ B1, Greg Shoemaker @ GS Marine, or Jack McClure @MPD.  At a minimum talk with Fut's on PB. These guy's can save you a bunch of time and headaches experimenting.
the one thing me and Chris are looking at is the motor placement. That's why I rigged my dimarco with the motor so forward.

Here is another link about an Anthony hull owned by a guy named Shaun. I think he had it running up in 90's at one point.

It also bounced at the top end like crazy.

From another southwind guy to another. Leave the outer strakes alone unless you want a porpous problem!!!!!! That boat is a ski boat, it will need a lot of hardware work and moving the motor around to get rid of it porpousing. I just had a talk with Chris at b1 about the exact same thing.

Work with Starkweaher on the cam/motor/ jet combo. It's what I did. I made. 625 on the dyno and spin a b- to 6300 to 6400 on a good air day. Chris knows his shit. Guy made my heavy pile run into the 90's all motor.

I don't think this ford motor could survive one round of comp jet. Would be fun to try her out though. Can't wait to try her out next weekend!!!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: 455 woes
« on: June 24, 2014, 09:50:19 PM »
Have a 455 olds in my boat. Recently had issues with it. Pulled engine. Had broken rings and some cylinder wall damage from the rings being bad.

Question is machine shop says the crank may be no good because of the nitrate would be removed if needs machining. Is this wise to do or get a stock good crank and just polish it?

Crazy thinking says switch to bbc. Which I would love to do. Any place I can buy all the mounting, bellhousing, flywheel, driveline and such?

Thanks
James

Nothing wrong with a well built 455. But if it were me, go with the bow tie. all the mounting and such you can find easy. some stuff you can find for sale here on socal.
Good luck

rideplate at 3 degrees up
nozzle 3-4 degrees up from keel. I assume your intake is 4 degrees down? ....so 6-7degrees up from pump angle.

not sure about shoe and loader, but i'd start with the 2 above and work on the 2nd 2 after that.

3 up? Sounds like not a lot of up for the ride plate. I'll try that and work from there. Yeah intake is in at 4.1 and 3* back cut shoe. Also the nozzle is angle is in relation from keel and the intake

Congrats!! And we just had a 7 month old on our boat this past weekend. My daughter was 6 months old for the first time.

Hats, lotion, and patience! They pretty much sleep the whole time. If you have OT's I'd say earmuffs for sure.

Congrats as well! My god daughter was out on my old green sw 18 at 5 months and loved it. X2 on the ear muffs if you have OT's

« on: June 24, 2014, 09:00:14 PM »
Alright boys, need some advice of where to start with the hardware with the dimarco. I've only done tunnels so.... I was thinking nozzle at 6*up and rideplate at 4* up. Shoe 1/8th above keel and the loader ramps are 1/2 inch above keel.

What do you guys think?

Drain the tanks and add a water fuel separator in your fuel system. Throw some sea foam in the new gas and Never look back.
