Jet Pumps / Re: Pump Setback and Ride Plate
« on: August 10, 2008, 11:25:18 PM »
Great explanation GT !!  Your right I wasn't thinking about the angle of the hull in the water  :banghead: .
Now if you added a ride plate to the set back pump drawing, it would effectively make the hull longer and it would create more lift.  Allowing the boat to ride higher in the water (less drag) before the intake would ventilate. Right ?

Exactly, but you are forgetting something, if you look at the jetpump as an assembly, the shaft is at a downward angle to the hull, so if the pump is further back it is automatically putting the thrust point lower in relation to the bottom of the hull..Does that make any sense?

So technically and to a point, the farther back the pump, the lower the thrust angle, the more need for some wedge and bigger demand for a plate.

  ??? ??? ??? OK, now I'm getting really confused.
The way I see it,  Looking at the pump as an assembly with a downward angled shaft, it wouldn't make any difference where you set the pump (forward or back). the thrust point will always be at the same height (compared to the keel). Unless you make the nozzle end of the pump itself longer or set the intake lower in the hull or at a different angle, or used a droop of course.

In my humble and sometimes ignorant opinion  ::) .  The reason to set the pump back would be increase the leverage the nozzle/thrust point has on the hull and to be able to make the ride plate long enough to be an affective adjustable hull extension .

Also, it gets the propulsion point away from the rear of the boat in "clean water", away from the wash of the hull, the ride plates purpose is to give the nozzle something to push against and makes the hull "adjustable".

Thats the part that always confuses me  ???.  If you set the pump back, say 6" than add plates (always longer than 6") how is the nozzen going to be in "clean water", away from the wash of the hull ?  Didnt you just make the nozzel closer to the back edge of the hull by adding the plates ?

The plates makeing the hull adjustable I understand, The ride plate angles up to create an adjustable amount of rocker, giveing the boat more bow lift helping it to air-out and be faster.  Or down would add a hook, slowing the boat and planting the bow down.  Right ??

If you're using the log manifolds than yes you need to do it differently.  Here's the diagram for the log manifolds.  If you have through transom headers that's a little different again.  Hope this helps.  ;D

you would be surprised the amount of people telling me i have to use a dual plane ???

2sav

2sav, That's because there to lazy to tune two carbs.  You can run whatever you want for an intake (dual plane, single plane, TR , whatever) as long as you size the carb(s) right it should be fine  ;) .  Like The Chaz said the HP/TQ advantage of the dual plane is below the normal operating range of a jet boat.  If I remember right it only takes around 50 hp to turn the pump at 2500 rpm (if a BB anything cant make that you have bigger problems than the intake)  :-\
Bottom line, use the TR if you like it just plan on spending some time getting the tune right (two sets of everything)

 GT,
No disrespect for the white water guys here but, I think part of the problem is the type of racing. I cant see it being much fun to watch , sitting on a river bank watching a race boat go by every once in awhile, with no idea who's winning or whats going on  :-\ .  This country doesn't seem to enjoy that as much as closed course racing (where you can see the race and see who's winning).  Auto racing has the same prob with rally races (and to some extent road racing) over here, in other countries people line the course (crazy!!!) but here we stay home and watch it on TV where we can see whats going on for more than just one corner.
