Projects / Re: New boat owner!
« on: December 02, 2013, 04:32:57 PM »
meh, sure all that stuff adds up but then you can have things the way YOU want them, not someone elses clapped out junker parts that have been sitting around baked in teh sun for 3 years that he wants top dollar for.  If theres anything I've learned over my lifetime of boating is that shit happens at the WORST possible times and its usually that ONE thing that you cheaped out on or didnt replace when you had the chance.

Do it right, take your time, and post lots of pix!  Boats are easy, and its VERY easy to get carried away...  but it doesnt take much to get a runner... just remember SAFETY FIRST!

My suggestion is to pull everything apart.  At this point you have nothing, everything is in an unknown state whether it works or not (even if you bought someone elses "perfect running boat" you still have no idea on its condition, it could break 2 minutes up river on your first trip).  So go through everything one by one, take an inventory of what you have, and what you're missing.  Its winter time so you have plenty of time to get things scrounged up parts wise and there will be PLENTY of deals out there.  Just get it all removed, take your time now and get it all clean and the way you want it and then assemble.

Well said Ka0tyk. X2 on everything you said.

Got some color on the scoop today. Scuffed up the primer with 220 Then shot it with a half prestec snow white gel and half prestec super clear, thinned it down about 4% with acetone and sprayed it with a harbor freight gun. Its almost a walk away finish.

I've been around drag boats for around 4 years now, helping different people at races. This was the first year that I could afford to go do it.

What are the small cables x2 I'm seeing on some high perf jets ? Is it some other type of steering system? I'm looking for a photo and will post when I find it.

Sent from my iPhone using SoCalJetBoats

That would be calgo steering system Tad. Its a cable system, much better than a normal rack and pin system. The normal cable system has a lot of slack in it. The calgo has little to none.

Great post Jake.   Ian and I have been kicking around taking mine out and running River Racer too.   You can't beat the opportunity to test your boat and setup and get some fantastic advice from others and do it under extremely safe conditions.

Plus, it looks like a hell of a lot of fun..........................john

It's the best time jonh. Plus you have Austin and Darin and the rest of the white flag guys to help you. meeting those two and picking there brains was one of the best parts of World Finals for me.

That sounds like a good idea.....

Hey Jake isn't there some limitations on Cubic Inch per class? Or are classes just based on times?

Sent from my iPhone using SoCalJetBoats mobile app

no cubic inch limit on R/R - Q/E
It's bracket Racing. So your trying to dial in as close to the number as possible.
NJBA has some classes that have cubic inch like unblown fuel jet, blown fuel jet ect.....

jmo id check what degree your intake is set and go from there. most boats dont have there intakes set where they typicaly should be i know of a nordic cough cough that we reset the intake and put a machined one in with ride plate and it improved the ride

Boat Racing / So You Want To Go Drag Boat Racing?
« on: November 19, 2013, 01:10:38 PM »
A few people have been asking me about racing and the Tech requirements. Well i am going to try an explain all of it here for every one!
I have not included V-Drive Tech on here. That Can be found on http://www.lucasoildragboats.com/pdf/2012/2012_Rule_Book_Revised.pdf

First of all, you have to belong to an association like; ADBA, CDBA LODBRS, SLDBA,KDBA. It normally runs 200$ for the year
If you belong to any one of these you are good to go for racing with any of the listed associations. You'll get a membership card: Make sure you bring this to the races.
You may buy a one time membership for one race. Normally runs 75-110$ depending on the sanction

NJBA is its own race association, having a membership with NJBA will not allow you to race any Lucas Oil races unless you buy another membership with a LODBRS sanction.

What class do you want to run?
Most races will have a test and tune session for 100$ bucks. or 20 a pass in some sanctions
R/R- River Racer - is a dile in class from 12.00 and slower( This is a Great class to get your feet wet.)
S/E- Stock Eliminator 11.00s
M/E- Modified Eliminator 10.00s
--------------------------------------- Anything faster than 10.00 requires a competition drivers licence. ( You will have to get a FFA type 3 Physical for this licence)

T/E Top Eliminator 9.00s
P/E Pro Eliminator 8.00s
Q/E Quick Eliminator 6.00s 1000FT

The Price of the race is different for each sanction. Its 150+ the parker deal with ADAB is 300$ well worth the $$$$$$

What YOU Need.

*Drive Line cover / loop*

Jet boats may use a 360 or 180 degree cover, a loop as described in the following section, or a device that will deter the driveline from exiting the boat in case of failure. No cover is required if the drive line is covered by the hull or transom.

Jet boats utilizing a drive shaft with one or two U-joints may use a drive line loop instead of a drive line cover.

For shafts longer than fourteen (14) inches, two (2) loops must be used. All loops must be mounted securely through the stringers to support the shaft in the event of a U-joint failure.

(outside diameter) x .049 inch wall thickness tubing or any material or combination of materials having the same structural strength and integrity.

* Jet-away/ Pop Off*

*Safety Chain*

All trailers must have and use a safety chain.

*Throttle Return Spring*

All boats utilizing carburetors or fuel injectors must have one quick action return spring attached to that part of the throttle plate lever which is connected to the butterfly shaft arm per carburetor. Two quick action springs are required on single carburetor/injector systems. All boats using the “bug catcher” type injector hats must have a spring on both sides of the hat. Throttle spring ends must be looped, and attach between a solid point and the throttle plate lever, avoiding the cable attach point.

*Throttle Stop*

All boats which are equipped with a foot operated accelerator pedal must incorporate a functional mechanical stop in the pedal mechanism which will limit the forward motion of the pedal. The stop must be positioned so as to prevent the throttle linkage from passing over center and thus sticking or locking in a full open throttle position.
