Just for $hits and giggles, and mostly because I'm dealing with the remnants of what eventually happens from serious milkshake issues on an expensive engine, straighten out a coat hanger and drop it in your dipstick tube clear to the bottom of the pan and check for indications of water. Oil floats on water and might be well below the dipstick if it's sat for more than an hour or so. Bad news is, guess what the oil pump pickup grabs first when you fire it again? Water=dirt in an engine.

Otherwise, I think these guys are right.

Yup, 79 according to the HID. Not unusual for Fish and Game to get it wrong here. One of my sleeks is a 76, but registered as a 75. Too much hassle to get that fixed.

FWIW, Flame arrestor is not needed on that. That front mesh IS the flame arrestor! It's a marine scoop, and it's sealed except for the screen........

I still can't beleive Mark and Dave never heard of these welders before, lol!     You guys need to get outta Cali more! I first used one redoing my, then new, Shelby Charger's front spoiler back in '83! Got paid by the insurance company from a deer collision, took the cash to fix it myself. Paid for the welder, did a bunch of other peeps crap and made some coin, then sold it for what I paid for it.

Looks to me like you learned how to use it pretty damn quick Mark!

Here's an interesting one I thought might benefit someone someday. I was gonna do a "where's waldo" deal on this one too, but I think it's best not to.

Terry (HDRiderth) was helping his buddy Jay get his boat set up and running after Jay and his buddies put a new cam in his motor.  After setting up the valve lash, trying to break in the cam the thing clattered like an old Model T I guess, but ran even and idled I guess on Friday night. So Saturday we all went floating, Jay came along with me during our version of the "Deadliest Catch"....a story unto itself, then Sunday we went after the motor again. Backed off all the roller rockers, Terry was turning the motor over as I set the valves. Had only set #1 and Terry felt resistance. I pulled the rocker and found the intake pushrod bent. pulled them all, and every intake pushrod bent. Some substantially



Terry thinks cam is too big and coil bind or retainers bottoming out on the guides and seals, or rocker slots hitting the studs. But we put in a stock pushrod, nope, plenty of clearance. So we start thinking cam timing, was in my mind the whole time, but I kept rationalizing, normally if cam timing it's the exhaust valves that have the issue, and no way it'd run. So off came the balancer and timing cover.

Anyone not real familiar with multi-keyway roller timing sets, a Comp Cams unit in this case, need to note that there are three marks on the keyways, and three corresponding marks on the outer edge of the timing set that are to be set up to point to the dot on the cam gear. Pretty easy mistake to assume the keyway and mark on the keyway lined up with the dot on the cam gear it's dead on timing. Seen it happen years ago, but not recently. The marks on the teeth on the outer edge in this case were VERY faint, but were none the less present.

The only reason for multi keyways is to be able to advance or retard cam timing +/- 3 to 4 degrees. Dont even think about it without a degree wheel, and should be done when the engine is in short block form and again when the heads and valvetrain are installed as a double verification. Normally not necessary these days, but there are times, mismatch in components, valvetrain geometry, tolerances out on parts, etc where it can come in real handy. Otherwise, just use straight up timing. But, if you use the "O" keyway, the actual timing mark is the corresponding "O" on the outer edge of the crank gear! same with the other marks.

This particular case, the cam timing was out a whopping 45 degress and the engine ran!    He dodged a very big bullet, no apparent piston, cam, valve or head damage (Thank god he bought "el-cheapo" hardened pushrods and it was a hydraulic cam and the lifters had not even gotten pumped up. We picked up an oil priming tool this time and ran it a good half hour before we got oil through all 16 pushrods). We replaced the pushrods with good chrome moly's, boat ran like a top all day Monday!    Valves need readjusting probably now that it's broke in, and another compression and leak down test to make sure all is well.

LOL! Not trying, really, but was my fault for not paying attention where he put the second box of beer. He was gonna throw the box over board, but Koozie saved the day by scooping water up and putting the beer out. None were lost! WHEW!

HDriders buddy Jay and Rivermamma were riding out with me tpo SCJB cove on Saturday. Jay had set two boxes of beer in the boat, one up against the log on the right, which I told him should be fine, but the other leaning right up against the O/T pipe.

YUP, Box caught fire that was up against the O/T pipe! Quickly put out, kinda funny, but not.

Then Nordie and I headed over to Swallow Cove? I think, anyway, to test how rough the water was. About halfway back Nordie noticed the left O/T pipe laying on the splash guard. DAMMIT! the one they didn't weld all the way around on cracked on the top.

After leaving for the dock, through the "perfect storm" it seemed, then had to come back and retreive Terry who was stranded with his flatty. The pipe came clean off. not much coice but to run it, water was still going over the transom. Didn't think about the hot exhaust blasting insode the boat, nor did Nordie.



Some upholstery work is in order, methinks! lol. Nordie had a new diverter cable we put on it, Jay's buddie welded the o/t pipe back up, pretty good this time, but I think some new ones are in order. Just another one of those lessons!

Actually a lot to do there, but yeah, I don't miss the winters.

I still know a ton of people back there, ones coming out here next week or so for a few days as a matter of fact. My parents seem to know everyone there. Feel free to use me as a reference on any applications you do or on your resume. You never know.
