George at clay smith recommended Dooleys. He mentioned it had "a proper windage tray"

Thanks GT. That makes sense. I guess the port i was confused about may have been for an automatic transmission or something like that.
Speaking of float level. How do you tell if it is set too high or too low. The instructions said to put them right in the middle of the bowl while holding them upside down.

Or is the power valve actuated by the vacuum in the carb and not manifold vacuum?

Yes it did seem to be a little rich above idle. There was some soot on the transom that seemed to be getting worse over the years. I just thought it was because the engine was getting tired.
Yes 10.5 seems like it would be open all the time.
I guess what im not sure about is how this power valve is actuated.  From what I understand it is one of the vacuum ports on the carb. However all of the vacuum ports are plugged on mine (except for the pcv). Would this cause the power valve to never open?

Correct me if I have those mixed up.

Its the Holley 0-9015-1. Marine version. It has two vacuum ports on the throttle body. One to the pcv valve and the other I beleive is the vacuum port for the power valve. There is also another vacuum port on the side of the metering body just above the idle mixture screw which is also blocked off. I think that one is for the advance on the distributor.
I dont have the cam size yet for the motor but it will have flat top pistons with about 9:1 compression.

I just finished rebuilding the Holley 4160 750cfm (vacuum secondary) that was in my boat. The kit came with a 6.5 power valve which I installed. Then I noticed the power valve vacuum port was blocked off. Is this typical for a jet boat or should i be using the vacuum port. The main jet sizes are 76. The 460 it was sitting on ran fine with no hicups and is currently being rebuilt.

This might be a dumb question but is the vent tube from the spark arrester supposed to connect to something or does it just hang down in the bilge?

Suggestions / Support / Re: 1988 Eliminator Question
« on: February 19, 2017, 09:43:13 AM »
The stock 460 had 330 hp turning an aggressor A/B impeller at 4600 rpms. I'm hoping to get that number up to 5200. I'm not sure where that will put me speed or horsepower wise. I'm thinking somewhere around 450.
I'm adding some forged flat top Pistons, a different cam, true roller chain, getting some work done on the heads and switching to roller rockers.
Are you gonna get that boat?

Thanks guys. I talked to George at Clay Smith as they are down the street from my work. He is a wealth of knowledge. I didn't realize he has always been so involved in the jet boat world. Always thought Mr Horsepower was all Hot Rods and street cars.

Might be tough to find a matching one. There's a lot of old school guys on here that might have something laying around. VDO is still in business (they have a website anyway). Maybe they can make one for you.

It seems the more I read about Cam's, the more confusing they become. I dont want to buy something I will regret so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Here is what I have (planned)

460 .030 over (externally balaced)
Flat top pistons
Holly 850
D3ve heads mildly ported and blended
stock crank
stock truck rods
SCJ iron manifold (might switch to aluminum if there is benefit)
TT logs and snails
12JC "A" impeller

So here are my questions...

Is there a good off the shelf cam choice for this?
Do I install the double roller sraight up or advanced? (replacing stock nylon gears)
Can I run the stock non adjustable rockers?
Is 450 HP feasible with log manifolds? (I want to keep the back seats)

Thanks

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: D3VE-A2A Heads for 460 rebuild

I talked to mr Bostick about it and he is going to be working my heads. He mentioned everything you did as well and will be cleaning everything up.
I'm not looking for huge power. Just want to make it breath better and be super reliable. I'm doing my best to keep the boat original. I grew up in this boat and it has been in the family since 1990.
Just looking for power where I can get it with the original heads, manifold, and water log exhaust.
Thanks for the info. I've learned more at SCJB than I have anywhere else.

Rebuilding my 460. Heads and oil pan removed. Engine looks clean for 35 years old and never opened up. I can still see some cross hatching in the cylinders. Water jackets were pretty bad and lots of sand in the block.

Not a big deal... biggest part is getting that exhaust lump mowed out... that is gonna help the most to get the exhaust ports to start moving some air.

If you like, give me a call... 619-792-3885 I have a complete machine shop, so anything along with porting you may like to have dine, we can handle.

Hey Bostick thanks for the reply. Thats exactly what I'm looking for. I am still in the process of tearing it down. If you are able to take care of everything at your shop that would be great. Saves me from having to drag that stuff around everywhere. Depending on what the heads look like I will probably need the seats ground and new valve guides.
As far as the block goes, just a bore and hone hopefully only .030 over and everything cleaned up. I will give you a call when i have have everything apart.

Rebuilding the 460 in my 1983 21' Eliminator jet boat. I plan on replacing the dished pistons with some flat tops to up the compression ratio, slightly bigger cam, yadda yadda yadda. Im looking for a machine shop to open up the exhaust ports on my cast iron D3VE's. I called a couple places in riverside and they both said they dont port heads. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Ok thanks for the replies. Ignition is mostly stock. I put a mallory distributor on it a few years back. I just needed to know what it was called so I can find a new one.
Cheers

Projects / 460 Rebuild Questions
« on: January 19, 2017, 02:19:48 PM »
Decided to pull my 460 packajet and 12JC pump this winter and rebuild them. I came accross this little electrical item that i cant identify. Is it some kind of fuse???

Also, any tips with rebuilding the engine would be appreciated as far as mild upgrades. It has never been rebuilt and has the original cast iron heads and cast iron SCJ manifold. The engine still runs very good and doesnt use any oil. Just getting a little tired. I want it to be reliable but wake it up a little bit. Maybe 375-400 horse. I think it was 320 originally.

Thanks for the advise!
