« on: August 17, 2011, 08:00:54 PM »Well I've been doing homework on both of em' for a little while now and have learned a few things. With the scorpion that Hull was designed for a outboard and needs extensive bottom work to pull the number. Nicks scorpion I've riddin in multiple times and love every bit of it, it sets beautifully and runs over a bill with a pump gas 540 but it has alot of time into the bottom. Then there's the Daytona. There were 2 bottoms with the Daytona, rounded keel and flat keel, rounded keel is the one your after. Flat keel works great with the out board but not ideal for a pump if you ever wanna run the number. I personally like the looks of the scorpion over the Daytona because its different and you don't see one every day. Just my measly 2 cents. And was talking about the 19 Daytona the 21-22 I'm not to sure on.

Just in case your thinking about the 21' Daytona. Almost all of them have the same bottom (rounded keel). There where a few made, special order, that had the keel raised for OB use, But there kinda rare. The only other difference is the older style hull (flared sponsons) and the newer style (slab side). The newer ones have a slightly different bottom, but there doesnt seem to be much difference in performance.

« on: August 14, 2011, 11:51:51 AM »The coil doesn't need a BR, the points do. You can run 12v constant to the points, but they won't live to long.....only a few months in a daily driven deal. I'd bypass the resistor just to see what happens....wouldn't surprise ms if you got a bad resistor.
He already bypassed the resistor and it did the same thing, fires in the start position and not in the run position.
I still think you should disconnect the tach before you install the new ballast. Something caused that ballast to smoke.

OK, so you did the jumper wire trick and sent constant 12v power to the coil and it did the same thing ? Or did you just bypass the ballast and use ign power from that black wire ?

If it runs with the key in the start position and not in the run position. You dont have enough power getting to the coil in the run position. Double check the voltage going into the BR and coming out of the BR when the key is in the run position. Also (like GT mentioned) make sure your coil needs a ballast (some dont).
You should have 12+v going into the BR with the key in the run position. And around 8v on the output side when cranking (disconect that orange wire from the starter solenoid to test this).
Sounds like the ballast is bad, or the coil doesn't need a ballast, or theres no power getting to the ballast.
The ballast probably died when you released its "magic smoke". All electrical components run on "magic smoke", once you release it, there dead.

Second pic. Center one is your rear mount and the one on the right is its matching front mount. You just need the proper mounting feet for them.

You also might want to disconnect the tach wire at the coil. Might have a bad tach sending a constant ground back to the coil, or the tach wire might be grounded somewhere.

So i picked up a 19 footer jet from my brothers girlfriends dad for a woppin $200. Funny thing is he doesnt remember who made it and he thinks he lost the paper work for the boat.But either way its not in too bad of shape and it only took me 2 hours to get the 454 fired up. Im just curious s to what the hell to expect.
1. expect to spend A LOT of money before its done.
2. expect to spend all your free time working on it.
3. expect it to let you down numerous times before it makes a successful day trip to the lake.
4. expect that $ 200 that you spent for it to one of the cheapest things you buy for it.
5. expect everything you touch to break, crumble, fall apart, crack, or in some way become useless as soon as you touch it.

OK heres my guesses,
First pic, left to right, BBF rear plate, BBF front cast mount, flywheel cover (see what the bolt holes line up with), and what looks like an attempt to make a front mount for a BBF that replaces the water pump blockoff plate (not sure what that round hole is for)
Second pic, left to right, BBC front plate, BBC rear cast mount, BBC front cast mount.

Does it spark (slightly) when you first connect it ? That can be caused by a lot of things. Memory wire for a stereo, amplifiers, etc, etc. Most of the time its not an issue, just an initial draw when things are first connected.
Or is it a BIG spark and the wire gets hot with nothing turned on ?

Or bad starter, and the ground cable is smaller gauge than the positive cable. If the starter is bad and drawing huge amounts of current, the heat will show up in the weakest cable/connection.

I have Basset water cooled headers and I've searched typical plumbing for jets with water cooled exhaust. Now all of the results I've come across (including Basset's) Have one outlet going to the dump and the headers off the other outlet. Now mine is not set up like this. It currently only has the dump coming off the T-stat. The headers are supplied by a T just below the T-stat, is this okay? I would hope so, it's been like that since 78'
