Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Swapping small block for big block?
« on: February 02, 2008, 11:49:19 PM »
I'm glad you have seen the light on this. I read this thread last week and decided to sign up just to give you my .02. But it look's like you decided correctly. You can get a ton of HP/Trq out of a stroker small block.

Rather you choose a 383, 408 or a  406 (.030 over bore 400) with the correct set of heads and the right cam and intake you can make some very good number's.

That's a copy of a 409" Ford Windsor that I had built a few yrs back. It might be more power than you are looking for , but something in the hp 585-600 range is not out of the question for a 406 or 408 smblk Chevy wth the right parts choosen for the job.

Nice Numbers!  We need to compare notes, I may have under estimated mine.  I supose with out a dyno pull I'd rather aim low however.  Which AFR heads were they and did they have additional work?

Those carbs could also be 450cfm 9776's with 50cc pumps.  But its hard to tell from the pic.  the 9776's are a stripped down inexpencive version of a 4160 style carb with mechanical secondaries but only one accelorator pump (not center squirters).  Designed for 2 x 4 applications only, decent for the price but the 660's definetly are the hot ticket.

BTW Glenwood makes that block off plate, but it looks like Gregs got ya taken care of.  -Later

Hmm, Im 24, and there was a point when we had a switch to switch between cable and satalite.  But I'll tell ya what it just took me 10 times as long to channel surf and come to the conclusion that it was all crap.  I now have 1 channel that comes in on my antenna, NBC couldn't ask for more

:o Dammm, sorry to hear the bad news, again  :( .  I dont know much about Chevys, but if the 396 crank and rods are still good cant you use them in the 454 block to make a 427 ?
You can do it, but the bob weight between a 396 crank and a true 427 crank are different. The pistons will weight more on a 427, so the balancer may have to add some metal to the crank.

As long as they don't bring down the price of the pair of "F" heads I'm about to sell I don't mind.  If I were restoring an old Olds though it would suck to think you had authentic heads and later someone figures out how to tell the difference from the real ones.

Kinda like photocopied money, huh

Now that we know the resistance ranges, it wouldn't be had to make an adjustable pill, like the one MSD offers.

.....wow just typed in a google search to find a pic of the pill MSD offers and acidently found a how to on making one, enjoy http://www.corral.net/tech/powerplant/arm/

Keith Black just came out with forged pistons for really good prices there about the same price as Hypers.
Already used a set, plus they are really good ppl to deal with.

kb makes .020s in hypers, and i have no problem running hypers.  But I'm not getting into that debate.

Speed-pro has some too, and TRW has a flat top forged

You got it, but I just checked it and it's a 0.020 over block right now. Which means boring
If the bores ok you might be able to hone it and get the right clearences.  Theres some .020 pistons out there

I'd probbably try shortening the ride plate 4" or so maybe in 1 inch increments.  But at first glance it looks like the exit nozzel is way up in relation to the keel.  I'd level the boat out and check the pump angle, the top of the intake/base of the suction should at 4 degrees or so.  It looks like it may less that could be causing you handling issue.

That looks like a set of casting plugs not the heads themselves.
You meen you dont thing they'll hold up to the heat? :D  I looked at it a couple of times too, but if you really read into it, it look like they'er trying to get pre-orders before they cast em.  They state "We stress that we do not want any money up front; the day we ship, will be the day we will bill you"

We've built 454's with peanuts before, I would typically drop down a stage on the cam. run about 4700-4800 with an A

I've always dug the lines on that boat. The back looks similar to a pantera bottom except it looks like its got an extra set of strakes on the sides of the intake opening, or atleast they extend all the way back.  is the keel rounded or a delta pad?

if you look at Mondellos website it looks as though the Edelbrock head was a joint venture. http://www.mondellotwister.com/edelhds.html. but then again there was a time my dad had a Mondello catalog where every part was worth x amount of horsepower.  Think we figures out with all the cool bolt ons we could add about 200 horses to his stocker. ;D

Those people in the ebay link look like they are producing more of a replacement, but it seems a bit pricey at 2400 unless your missing casting from a numbers car, still not the same i guess.

I wonder what a peanut port headed 496 would do pulln a 9.5 impeller at 3500rpms? I got plenty of sets of those makin dents in the concrete. ;D

I know the feeling...  AND you could do a 10 second quarter mile on pump gas at 23 cents a gallon.  Oh for the good old days again!  I had a 68 Camaro that had a spoiler on it.  :)
I had a 68 camaro spoiler on my mustang, literally. Chopped and filled the corners to make it fit.  Don't ask about the stupid window decal, it was only on for about a week.

I sure do miss that car ever now and a again.....oh well next project :D

Boat Showcase / Re: 16' Bezer

I will add that I belive the loosing the pasenger thing had mostly to do with where the weight was located.  Because the boat is so tiny (narrow) the biggest problem is airing it out, and removing the extra weight from the cock pit area just freed it up nice.

That was with the old engine build. Then it was 77.something at 5000 with a Billet B impeller(like an A-).  When I added the vacuum pump and mufflers it turned 5400 but I didn't get a speed run. I don't thing the mufflers had anything to do with it but two sets off muffler sure didnt hurt this thing. I don't think the vacuum pump made all that power it just freed it up. The old motor had crank case psi problems that i've taken steps to correct in the new build, plus about 50 to 75 extra horses. Funny thing is that engine never turned passed 5000 when it was in my Mustang either , must have been the psi.

I've gotta get it buttoned back us soon its got a new stainless B cut Turbine  impeller that i'm gonna run back to back with a B cut Hi-helix, so it ought to be interesting.

I guess I'm going in the right direction then.  When I bought the boat (July 07) I was a BIG boy, 315lbs.  I've lost 55lbs.  Hoping, by the time summer rolls around, I'll have lost the majority of next 70lbs.  That being said, 3mph IS 3mph. I'll take it anyway I can.  Then the 408 stroker on top of that would be plenty.
Congratulations, that is awesome!
Seriously, good job!
