Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Carb Question
« on: February 18, 2010, 07:30:31 AM »
I will post some pics up when I get home, which I shoulda done in the first place.  I'm sure I am calling it the wrong thing, I will point it out in the pic when I post it.  And GT, I don't know what the air horn exactly is.  When I post the pics I will include pics of all numbers I can find.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Carb Question
« on: February 17, 2010, 08:41:30 PM »
So I took my carb off and the secondaries (I think) were frozen.  So I free'd them up and after taking a look at it I decided that its just time to replace it which brings me to the burning question.  I have very little knowledge of carbs.  What should I go with?  Should I go higher to an 850 maybe?  I looked on ebay and there are just tons of options.  The one I have now is a 750 dp I think but I'm not sure how to identify it.  And I don't know all the technical jargon, vacuum vs manual secondaries and all that.  I may have to go on how stuff works.  Just wondering what the general consensus was from the carb experts.  I have an edelbrock torker manifold I think but I'm not even 100% sure about that.  Its a 455 by the way.

Jim, can you run a single carb set up on that scoop?  Thats exactly what I was looking for.  How much for the gauges nordie?  I do need the tach though, thats the worst of the bunch.  It bounces from 2500 to 4500 its so old, I can't tell exactly what rpm I'm running at.

Looking for a cable for forward and reverse control, I broke mine.  :banghead: Also looking for some gauges, new or used, preferrably white faced.  And finally an old school air scoop, the kind with the three red dots any condition I will be painting it anyway.

Alright, it's been a long time since I've been on, got back from afghanistan a couple months ago.  Now its that time to work on ye olde boat.  Before I deployed I had a problem with no fuel getting to the left bank.  Also had an oil leak, possibly the head gasket, so I'm going to just tear it down and give everything a once over.  I was thinking of changing out the cam (it is stock) and replacing it with something more performance oriented.  I found this little gem on ebay and wanted an opinion on if I should get it.  Seems like a pretty good deal, but I dont know shit about cams.  This can be viewed at this link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Maddog-Ultimate-Oldsmobile-455-370HP-Cam-Kit_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem335943e85dQQitemZ220540954717QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I am also thinking of going a totally different direction overall look.  I plan on painting just about everything on it.  The headers included.  Has anyone used a high heat paint that they are fond of that works well?

Also, I am looking for a used air scoop, the kind with the butterfly openings.  Condition doesnt matter cuz it will get painted anyway.  Cheaper the better.  Aslo going to replace the guages and I can't remember who was selling them last time. Thats about it for now.

It loses about 2 qts per 3 hrs of run time, roughly.  No I haven't taken anything apart, I was just looking for info.  I will probably open a new thread when I get back, at least I will have all winter to work on it.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Olds 455 help....
« on: April 24, 2009, 07:41:18 PM »
Ok so here are all the things that are going on with this thing.  I took it out today and it was running fine for about 10 min.  I heard a pop and slowed up and looked everything over and it looked ok so I hit the gas and it would not get up on plane.  Ok so I reach back and check the exhaust and there is nothing coming out of the right bank.  Perfect.  So I had to limp it back to the dock at idle.  Now for the questions.  What is the problem? Also have alot of oil in the bilge, and a leak from the heads so I'm assuming that I blew the head gasket, but thats on the left bank.  So I was looking up parts and I came across a page about the 455.  Good motor very forgiving yada yada.  So I started looking up parts and I came across a vendor and I started reading through looking at different parts.  They had some parts that could raise the temp of the water.  I've never seen my water temp get above 120, and thats no matter how hard I'm running it.  They claim that this motor is designed to run at a minimum of 160 or you will blow a head gasket.  I would normally think they were nuts but now it seems plausible? Has anyone ever heard of this?  I also though I maybe was running too heavy of an oil 20/50w.  Also my oil press fluctuates between 30 and 40.  Is that normal or should it be higher?  Not that this is a big priority I leave for afghanistan on tuesday so no summer out on the water  :banghead:  Just looking for info its bugging me to no end.  Anyone got anything to add feel free to chime in.  Also my headers are melting the water line.  Is there a certain type of hose to use? I was thinking of redoing all the hoses anyway with something heavier, maybe braided lines or something.

Ok, so maybe, just maybe I can let the 22 dollar lube slide.  Thats where I thought the bulk of the cost was going.  Nope charged me a 115 in labor.  WTF?  Now I understand that mechs need to get paid.  But 115 dollars an hour?  Oh and lets not forget the 23 dollar bottle of whatever gasket sealer they used.  Maybe if the dealership wasn't constantly fucking people over with outrageous labor charges and overcharging for everything, people would be more inclined to take their cars to the dealership.  Now why do people take their cars to pep boys and jiffy lube?  Because they can't afford an 80 dollar oil change.   Just for grins I checked with jiffy lube to see how much they would charge to change the fluid and reseal the diff.  89.99.   So if you can honestly justify why a the ford tech needs to charge over a hundred dollars more for doing the exact same thing then I will gladly pay.  But the last time I checked it was still just a differential with gears in it, fill plug and some gasket maker you can pick up at autozone for 6 bucks a tube.

Yeah if I'd have known they where going to scam me like that I woulda done it myself.  But like I said it was already there to have the sway bar strut done, and I didn't want to drive it with the fluid so low the 25 miles home and break a gear.

So I developed a leak in the differential on my expedition, and since I was having a sway bar brace installed anyway, I had them take a look at it.  So they said they would and call me with a quote.  So I get the phone call.  205 fucking dollars to replace the fluid and reseal the diff!  What in the flying fuck costs so much I ask, politely.  Couldn't be the labor I mean its 12 bolts and a gasket.  Turns out the scandolous bastards are using some high speed gear oil that costs, get this, 22 fucking dollars a QUART!  Thats right, 22 of my hard earned dollars per QUART.  Last time i checked a barrel of oil was like 55 bucks.  So by my math if you turn one barrel into this magic diff oil you make a gross profit of 4790 dollars, per 55 gallons.  I mean did they put gold in it or what?  Apparently I need to enter the lubrication business.  Ok end rant.  On another note is anyone going to be out on lake mead this friday?  I'm taking the boat out for a spin.

Its what forms the electrode.  When you pass electricity through it, it splits the water into a hydrogen/oxygen gas.  This causes an extreme enviroment, I can show you pics of what happens after about 5 mins.  Its instant corrosion, looks like its been sitting in the rain for years.  Stainless will stand up to it for an a period of time but will eventually break down.  Copper is useless it corrodes to easy, galvanized alum is a waste of time as I found out.  The stainless is the most cost effective material I can find to test with.  Thats the short answer.  But I can use it.  Its a neat project though.  We have alot of time on our hands up here in the desert.

Its got to be 316 due to the harsh environment.  I could definately work with the sheet those sizes are def doable.  Wouldn't even need that much maybe two or three sheets of the 8 by 40.  Is that bendable?  I'm not to familiar with the gauges of sheet metal.  How much to ship to Twentynine Palms Ca?  I would pay for it.  Its gotta be cheaper than buying, sheet metal prices are throught the roof down here.

316 is what the general consensus is.  What I am looking for is stainless steel wire, I'd like to do my next setup with the same config in the pics I put up prior.  Sheet stainless wouldn't be bad either, would require a design change but doable.  Science is great isn't it?  Makes me feel like I'm in hs again.  I can probably work with any type of scrap and make something happen, but its hard to tell.  The main issue was when the h2o split, the oxy coroded the hell out of the galvanized I was using.  This happend in a matter of five minutes.  Looks like it had been out in the rain for about 2 years.  Interesting stuff nontheless.

I would liove to hear the outcome of your experiment, mine didnt go all so well. i tried a fuel/water hybrid in my BBF jet boat....

How do you think i got the name "Rodbender" ;D

In my reading and understanding of what goes on, two things might have caused this.  1.  Due to an excessive enrichment of the fuel/air mix, the timing was not retarded enough to allow for proper ignition.  For example, if you were set at 8 deg before top dead center, and the plug fired, the resultant explosion what be faster, actually trying to drive the piston down on the up stroke, thereby causing a bent or broken rod.  2. You possibly didnt run a leaner amount of fuel, which would do the same thing.  Thats sort of the point of this, if your running leaner, but getting the same results, viola, better fuel economy.  So let the experimentation continue!

Allright, the first prototype was built and tested as shown in the pics.  After hooking everything up and giving it a test run, about two minutes of idle time, the idle on my expy smoothed a bit, not a whole lot but a noticable change.  However, due to lack of quality materials ( stainless steel line is the most important) i got heavy corrosion on the electrode lines, as expected, which I was hoping for to show that it was doing what it was supposed to do.  So I consider this stage 1 of testing a success, and am looking to build another prototype.  So if anyone has some scrap stainless steel laying around, I could really use it.
