Also try a 0.20 shim see if noise and problem goes away unless you have a hole in the back flex plate cover to measure the gap between the starter and the flex plate

I agree I would put another starter on it I had that problem starter would engage and crank for two second then gear would suck back in and spin and sound like a grinding
