Everything was re-wired the way it came off the old one before this problem came up. The battery was replaced earlier so we know that it's got the voltage going to it. We tested the starter with it off the engine and the bendix gear worked as it should. Should the small wire on the slave solenoid be moved to the other small terminal on there maybe?

I've heard the auto parts store starters might not be for this type of application. The starter is wired exactly as it came. One wire in (positive) to slave solenoid, one wire out (to starter), and one wire to ground...?? That sound right?

Might be the wrong starter. We pulled the spark plugs out and turned it over. Starter sounded fine under minimal load. When plugs were re-installed, issue came back again. Carb was removed to begin with so we didn't admit fuel to it. What kind of starter is anyone else running on a 454??

New battery installed. Cranks over and engages the flywheel then disengages and grinds again. Old battery was one of our issues then. But now I'm thinking the flywheel might be too chewed up. Should I install a couple shims?

Slave solenoid, yes

Knurled style bolts, yes

When you say ring gear, are you talking about the starter gear inside there?

And I can't really tell whether it's a flywheel or flex plate.

Big block Chevy 454.The starter makes a grinding noise when starting. Used several shims to bring the starter down. Still grinds. Put new starter in, 11 tooth. Would I need to use a 9 tooth starter?Flywheel is 168 teeth. Need help ASAP. Bought the boat and never had a starter issue. Took it out to run her and she wouldn't run. Tried and tried but nothing. Checked carb And rebuilt the carb after seeing how gunked up it was. Once the carb was reinstalled this issue came about. No reason at all.

This is a bad ass boat, everything is built out thoughtfully and done right. The previous owner soldered all of the wiring, all of it is contained under the rear seat and very well thought out, no electrical issues here. Everything that is anchored to the floor was done with stainless inserts, not just drilled in with some cheap home depot screws. This boat is bad ass, definitely turns heads on the river. It's pretty quick, does 80 with 2 people and some coolers.

Come check it out, it is turn key and ready to go.

Still for sale? $10k cash for entire boat as is?
