Jet Pumps / Berkeley white paint
« on: January 03, 2013, 12:19:43 AM »
I have just gotten my boat buffed up and the entire interior redone.  This now makes my pump look horrible as the paint is flaking off a little bit.  I am going to sand it down and repaint it this week.  What kind of paint is the best to match the original color?  Also, what about the blue for the "BERKELEY" letters on the transom cover?

Thanks!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Building boat wiring harness
« on: July 18, 2012, 07:03:18 PM »
Awesome!  Thanks for the replies everyone!  GT, are you referring to the harnesses that they have listed that all begin with the part number MAR6117?  If so, that is a damn good deal, and I was expecting to pay around that just for the supplies to build my own.  That may be a better route for me to go.  As far as the senders, I will look in to replacing them, so everything from the sender to the gauges is new, and accurate.  That may be my best bet.  I will probably pull the fuel sender and see what it looks like, and see if I can play with the float on it and make the gauge respond to it.  Thanks for the help again!

Random Boat Parts For Sale / Re: Carburator, distributor, etc.

Well I myself have never had it out at Havasu, my old boss did take it to the Avi a few times back in 07-08.  Maybe it was him?  You can tell the boat from most normal Halletts because it has a special interior package that I have never seen on another jet boat before.  I do hope to get it down to Havasu this summer, but I can't right now as my drive cables are fubar right now, and I do not have any extra cash until payday as I just dropped my spending money on new Auto Meter gauges.  Hope to see some fellow jetters down there!

Random Boat Parts For Sale / Carburator, distributor, etc.
« on: July 17, 2012, 08:15:58 PM »
So I am looking to sell some extra parts I have around the house here to try and fund getting new steering and forward/reverse cables so I don't have to wait until payday!  haha! Steering went out right in front of the dam on sunday.  :banghead:  I will trade whatever I have if you have the cables!  Let me know and I will get to measuring them.  8)

I realize this is my first for sale post, so please, if there is any concerns call or text my cell phone at 702-371-4127 or PM me here, my name is Lucas.  I have sold things online before, I can show you my reputation from various different car-related forums.

Edelbrock 1410 marine carb 750 cfm.  This will come with the original box, sales receipts, and receipts for accel pump and rebuild kit.  Was rebuilt last summer by one of the techs at Lake Mead Marina.  It runs great, I swapped it for a holley so I could use my ski hook (bolts on to intake manifold).

These are going for a minimum of $350 online that I have seen, so how about we call it $230  (Exact price of new control cables from CPPerformance)
IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS I WILL HOOK IT BACK UP TO MY BOAT AND RUN IT NO PROBLEM!

Mallory Unilite Distributor with plug wires for 460
I will also hook this up to my boat to show flawless operation!
Not sure on price??  Throw me an offer

I also have a set of original 460 Hardin Marine valve covers that could use a good cleaning but are in great condition.  Also, make me an offer on these!

A K&N velocity stack intake with BRAND NEW K&N air filter that has zero hours, comes with receipt for filter, can see it in this picture of my boat (That is the old filter, not the new one) $50?

Also, I have a complete set of D3VE A2A valves, springs, seats, and keepers from my old heads.  $40?

A good friend of mine is also selling a bunch of things from his 460 build for his Spectra day cruiser that he never got to putting back together.  Everything is in amazing condition.  He has a fresh rebuilt 12JC-A pump, mirror polished exhaust logs, bottom end, the entire hull with new vinyl, etc.  Let me know, and I can put you in contact with him!

Thank you!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Building boat wiring harness
« on: July 17, 2012, 07:49:32 PM »
So I just got my new auto meter marine gauges for my boat, and while I am at it I am going to re-do the original 1976 wiring harness.  I have a couple questions though, first, how should I go about rewiring the original ammeter for the new volt meter?  If I am going to be redoing the harness, can't I just delete that wiring altogether?  Second, would the new gauges be compatible with all of my old senders? My old gauges are basically junk, and the only gauge that I hooked up was the fuel gauge, and my old one read 1/4 tank while the auto meter is barely above empty.  Is there a way to adjust them?  I am fairly certain that there is more gas than that in the tank.  I appreciate all the help I can get on this!  Thanks!!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: 460 coil wiring
« on: May 30, 2012, 07:48:01 PM »
Yeah there is definitely a couple wiring issues that i am trying to get all worked out, the previous owner was a bit of an idiot. haha

by RTR do you mean ready-to-run?  If so, then yes it is, this is the actual distributor here: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-83506/

There is 4 wires off the dizzy,

ORANGE to coil (-)
RED to coil (+)
Black to ground
Green to tach

I called MSD and they also said that it does not need a ballast resistor, but i do have one installed.

My alternator only has two wires, the larger one runs in to the terminal block on the bell housing, and the smaller one runs up to the terminal block as well, but connects to the ignition switch circuit and then goes on to the input of the ballast resistor.

I can provide pictures of whatever would be of assistance, just let me know!

Thank you!

Basically what I am asking is if there should be a wire going from the "I" port on the solenoid to the (+) on the coil?

Would not having this wire cause me to have weak spark?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 460 coil wiring
« on: May 30, 2012, 02:57:07 PM »
So I've been down for some time now, turns out both of my heads were cracked between the valves, so I got a new set, and a badass holley for the setup while I was at it.  Now I am about to go get me a starter here soon and try and fire it for this season!

My question is for the wiring on the distributor/coil.  It is an MSD billet marine unit with a blaster SS coil. The only wire that runs to the coil (besides the distributor + wire) is a wire that comes from the alternator excite and goes to the ignition and then to the coil.  i have read that there is supposed to also be a wire going from my start solenoid directly to the coil +.  Is this correct?

The person I bought it from had some cheap ignition box installed and this wire was not present, hence my asking.

Thanks!

Lucas

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 460 starter/alt/ign wiring
« on: August 14, 2011, 01:44:21 PM »
Okay, first things first, I have been searching and found the Hardin wiring diagrams for the original setup.  I have a couple questions about my wiring as I found some melted wires and i'm just gonna redo the whole thing.

MSD ignition (no ballast resistor required)
2-wire alternator
2-wire high torque starter
3 post starter solenoid (Looks like a ford oem truck starter)

Is it okay to run the single smaller gauge wire from the alternator straight up to the coil, and then to the terminal block on the back of the motor, or should it be ran to the terminal first?

My engine does not have a breaker installed, but the Hardin diagrams say that there is supposed to be one. Should I install one, and if so, what size?

How should I wire my electric choke?

I appreciate all input thank you!

I ended up getting 10 quarts of staight Valvoline 10w-40. Would it be wise to pull out a quart or so an add some sort of zinc-containing substitute?

Thanks for the replies!!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Oil type
« on: August 12, 2011, 02:00:21 PM »
What kind of oil are you guys running in your 460s? I had no clue what was in my boat before, and i swapped it to some Mercury 25W-40, but I had to swap my heads and im going to have to change it again.  Im just wondering if anyone has a preference of what kind of oil to run.  My motor is mostly stock with a mild cam in it. Thanks

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / BBF bent pushrod
« on: July 28, 2011, 04:22:48 PM »
My 460 was runing like crap so I decided to run a quick compression test.  Across the board 1-8 it tested 115, 115, 125, 115, 115, 115, 0, 95. I pull the valve cover on the one side, and the intake pushrod for my #7 was missing.  I thought cool, the rod is probably in the intake valley and thats why I obviously have zero compression in that cylinder.  I installed a new pushrod and tried to crank it over again, and twice it just bent the pushrod.  What could be the cause of this? I have no clue how long the pushrod was missing either because I havent gotten too much run time on it yet.  Thank you!

I prefer something already rebuilt or like new, ready to be dropped on and ran.  Stock or certain aftermarket brands are cool, just let me know what you've got.  You can call or text me, or email me on here.  Thanks!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 460 timing and idle
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:03:35 PM »
Okay so I am about to take my boat out tomorrow, and I need to get all of my timing adjusted properly, along with my idle.  Here is what I am going to go for, with a MSD billet dizzy and a 750 cfm edelbrock:

Initial timing 10-12*
33* total at 3000 rpm
Autolite 26's gapped to .045
idle @ 1200 rpm
fresh oil change with 25W-40 Mercury oil

Does that sound about right?  What should I start my idle mixture screws at when adjusting?  Should I adjust the carb or timing first?

Thanks!

Alright so today we got it figured out.  It was the pickup on the dizzy, we swapped in a mallory unilite, and with alligator clips being used as grounds it fired right up haha.  I'm going to send in the MSD for a warranty claim.  Would you guys suggest running the unilite or the MSD? I appreciate the help guys !  ;D

I just took the distributor ground and cleaned it up with a wire brush and some simple green.  And I also moved the engine ground to the bellhousing like you suggested, and now I don't have spark from the coil again.   :banghead:

I think my problem might lay int he grounding.  I got spark once I grounded the dizzy to the head with a much shorter ground wire.  I have a single ground wire on the battery going to the engine block.  I feel like I should run another one directly to the starter itself.  Isn't the bellhousing itself aluminum so shouldn't it not be a good conductor? Ill also run a fresh 10 gauge line to the terminal block while i'm at it.  I appreciate all the help guys!!  ;D

I got a brand new coil and an msd resistor and installed both. I went to test spark from the coil as lbhsbz described and I get nothing. The only time im seeing a spark is from the jumper wire when I tapped it against the valve cover. Where is the best spot for the grounds for the dizzy and the engine itself?

I have the switched +12v from the ignition ran to the + term on the coil, along with the red wire from the dizzy.  Black ground wire ran to the terminal block ground on the back of the motor. Grey wire ran to tach. And the orange wire ran to the - term on the coil.

Hmm well I didn't get the curve checked before I put the dizzy on.  I got the dizzy in and installed, and I got the boat running decently well just by turning the cap timing it by ear.  I bring it down to the water to get a light on it, and I installed a brand new set of the same plugs that were in the boat, all gapped properly.  I had DRIVEN the boat up to the dock, changed the plugs, and hooked up the light, then I cranked it, it fired fine and ran for about 4 seconds and died.  Tried to crank it again and I have no spark from the coil?? I just installed a new MSD blaster coil, and ran new wiring to the coil, and we were seeing 12V at the coil(+) terminal. I talked to my boss and he said it could be the coil or the magnetic pickup inside the dizzy itself.  How would I go about properly testing to figure out what exactly is wrong, and to prevent it from happening again! I want to learn how to take care of my boat properly!! Thanks!  :screwy:

Pointing towards the #1 cylinder or the wire?  I turned the crank until the pin (on the top left side of pulley if looking straight at it) was directly on the 0* mark on the pulley.  I looked at the rotor and it looks as if it is right on the #1 cylinder plug wire, about 10'clock.  ???

So I got it to sit flush, i installed all the wire and went to crank it, and it wont start, it just cranks.  What is the proper way to check and make sure the rotor is on the right tooth?
