Projects / Re: Outboard to Inboard with Jet Drive Conversion
« on: August 03, 2011, 09:10:42 PM »
If you're going to do a setback install, PM Propless. His came out awesome and had his own little method for how he got it as square and as tight as he did. His acutally will not need those aluminum plates because he glassed the transom back in very tight to the pump. A little silicone around the pump and viola! You have the advantage of merely cutting out so it fits that snug and very little glass work.   ;)

You'll probably spend a day or two with a grinder underneath once the intake is in reshaping the keel to work with the new jet intake, but shouldn't be too bad.

Ray

 Actually Ray its not that close and will still need plates.  You just cant make it perfect because the front bearing and that area where the ID plate is is bigger than the back section of the suction housing where the plates go.   But I will be able to make the transom plates quite a bit smaller than normal.

4fiddyR,  Heres a link to a few pics of about what you will cutting out of your hull to fit the jet.  This is about the minimum size hole it takes to be able to fit the pump in and out of the transom (second and third pics).  First pic shows what you will be cutting out of the bottom.  These are for a set back pump.  Dont worry about the rest of the pics of the pump, that just me being picky.  ;)

 Not real sure on that motor but some of them have a tilt switch, motor wont start/run when its trimmed up to far.  Should be a small mercury type switch with a yellow or yellow/black wire on it.  It should not show ground on that wire when the key is on

 It should start and run if you jump the starter as long as the key is on and theres no kill switch/safety switch.  Heck it should start and run if you unplug it from the boat as long as theres fuel in the carbs.  Starter solenoid works just like a normal motor, big power wire from the batt, big wire to the starter, ground on one of the small terminals and power from the key (start position) on the other small terminal.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: weird oil pan issue
« on: July 31, 2011, 12:35:15 PM »
The only problem I have with the harmonics idea is this.  One pan is ribbed, one is dimpled.  One pan is a straight bottom and the other has and angled section.  It would be VERY difficult to get two pieces of sheet metal to have the same harmonic issue when they are different sizes (damage on the Dooley is on the smaller angled section) and have different surface shapes (ribbed/dimpled).

 How about this for an idea sense this happened to both pans right below the pickup.  When the motors are shut down, very hot oil is draining back through the pickup into the pans creating a hot spot right below the pickup.  Is that even possible ??

 Just like everything else Ray, you get what you pay for.  If you pay for a cheap China relay, you get a cheap China relay.   ;)

 If you want a good reliable relay go to your local stereo shop and tell them you need a GOOD relay.   We go through around a 100 relays a month at work, and they rarely fail.  Stereo shops use a lot of relays for alarms, and other things, and having customers coming back because of a stupid relay failure is really annoying (my door locks dont work, my car wont start, etc, etc).

I had an OB Ign switch sitting here for years (from the Daytona).  Threw it away a few months ago, didnt even think about the fact that I would be able to use it with my mag.    Would have worked perfect.  :banghead:

30 an 87a are interchangeable in this case.  If the kill switch is pull closed, then you just splice the ground outs and call it good.  If the kill switch is pull open, then You run the key hot through it to close 30 and 87a  when pulled

Mine was easy, did it tonight.... The wires were already there....zapped me while I was playing around with it...made em easy to find

 If you mean that the terminals could be reversed, yes that would work fine that way.  But,  if the kill switch is wired on the ground input side of the relay the key will not shut off the motor (ground the mag) when the kill switch is connected.  There will be no ground getting to the relay to kill the mag.  Yes you could just splice the kill switch to the relay output wire (wire to the mag).  But you might as well do it the way I described and use the unused terminal on the relay (no splices).

 And why are you using a relay Pat ?  You have an OB right ?  Just get an OB ignition switch, they have a ground output when you turn them off.

Ummm Ralph,  how did you wire 30 and 87a "through" that yank-to-kill switch ?  And what type of switch is it ?  Is it the type of switch that sends ground out (makes contact) when you pull the plug (thingy).   If so, and you wired it on the ground wire going to terminal 87a of the relay, its not going to work like that.  You wont be able to kill the motor with the key, there will be no ground on 87a unless the kill switch is pulled.   If I'm right about how the kill switch works, wire the output side of the kill switch to the 87 terminal.  That way the kill switch (when pulled) can ground the mag when the relay is energized, and the key can ground the mag by shutting the relay.

 85 and 86 = ign and ground, like you have it.
 30 = to the mag
 87a = ground
 87 = from ground when pulled kill switch

 If its the type of kill switch that has contact when it plugged in and no contact when its pulled, wire it on the ground going to the 85 or 86 terminal (whichever your using for ground).

 I had the same problem with an escape artist dog.  She would jump the fence, play with the neighborhood kids, sleep on the front lawn, etc.  Then as soon as she would hear my car she would jump back over the fence into the back yard and be waiting for me like nothing was going on.  My neighbor snitched on her, or I never would have known.

 I know you said you made the fence taller, but how did you do it ?  I added 2' of lattice work to the top of the fence.  It looked good and stopped her cold.  It wasnt sturdy enough for her to climb, and it was to tall for her to jump.  ;)  just an idea

I Love those Liberator hulls! So much more friendly than say a Daytona! Still kick myself in the ass for passing one up a couple years ago...... :banghead:

Ray
If i'm not mistaken ray, I believe that this early liberator hull (later ones changed) is almost identical to Daytona hull with the exception to the little point in the middle between the "forks" to the point that Eliminator had taken legal action against liberator. Hence the design change on liberator's part.
 I could be totally wrong on this, It's story that i was told.

 Ray gets a bit confused sometimes (old age ?).  I think he was thinking about the 21' hulls where the Liberator was deeper than the Daytonas.

 Nice looking project Dirty !!

 Hate to be the bearer of bad news,  but,  no you cant just fix it from the bottom.   You will need to get at it from both sides to fix it right and make sure it doesnt come back.  Its time to rip up the floor, or at least part of it.  Heres what I went through with a similar issue http://www.socaljetboats.com/gelcoat-paint-fireberglass-repair/the-reacuring-crack/msg14887/#msg14887

 Sorry, but theres no quick and easy way to do it right.

 BTW,  I could never figure out why the water makes rust marks on a fiberglass hull, but mine was like that too.  :o

Central Valley / Re: Pine Flats for the 4th of july
« on: June 14, 2011, 10:04:55 PM »
 Its a decent lake,  and really nice water can be found up river from the main body.  But like bigmike posted, not much in the way of nice beaching areas.  Its mostly muddy or rocky (small rocks).   Add to that the new MANDATORY live vest law on that lake this year and I think I would look for somewhere better to spent my 4th of July.

Some pics of Pine Flat
 Up river a bit from the main body.  Thats a fairly standard Pine Flat shoreline.

 Main body of the lake (middle of winter so no other boats messin up the water).

 Just a quick update.

 I finally figured out where I wanted the intake to be so I could fill in the rest of the old intake opening.

 Couldnt stand the HUGE, crooked, sloppy, hole in the transom for the old pump, so I had to "fix" that too.

 Fits much better now.

 Also did some blending inside the pump.  >:D   Intake to suction housing now fits perfect.

 Didnt like the huge gap around the clean out cover though,  So had to "fix" that too.   >:D  Fits perfect now and is still removable.

 Also drilled a tapped the housing for the pressure taps.

 Progress should move along a bit faster now that its on a dolly.  I can move it around alot easier now.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Forced E85
« on: May 25, 2011, 01:00:09 AM »

Just random thinking out loud.........And I think, Superchargers are WAYYYYYY different than turbochargers are on the stuff.  Turbochargers have no real way to take direct advantage of the cooling/evaporation  effects of the fuel. They will to an extent, but not nearly the way a blower engine benefits, and thus, final C/R needs to be taken cautiously using E85 and Blower numbers on a turbo application.

Ray

 Dont forget one thing Ray,  Hes talking about EFI on this thing, so its going to inject that nice cooling fuel into it after the turbos.

Find Unchained on pb.com and theturboforums.com
he has done it and knows his shit.

 X 100,  Mark (Unchained) is the one you need to talk to !!!

 Marks motor,  540 ci, twin turbo,  EFI,  E85,  29.5 lbs boost = 1841 torque @ 4800 rpm and 1810 HP @ 5800

http://www.performanceboats.com/dyno/52723-540-arias-twin-turbo-efi-dyno-video-2.html#post911003

 Heres something I copied and saved when Ray and I where considering E85 blower motors, some interesting facts here.

Ethanol vs Methanol

Methanol and Ethanol both have advantages and disadvantages over fossil fuel gasoline. For instance, both alcohols can run at a much higher compression ratio without octane-boosting additives

Alcohols burn more completely because their molecules contain oxygen;
Oxygenated chemical compounds contain oxygen as a part of their chemical structure. The term usually refers to oxygenated fuels. Oxygenates are usually employed as gasoline additives to reduce carbon monoxide that is created during the burning of the fuel….. Carbon Monoxide is BAD!

The oxygenate MTBE has been found to have contaminated groundwater, mostly through leaks in underground gasoline storage tanks. In 2004, California and New York banned MTBE, generally replacing it with ethanol.(Ethanol is Biodegradible…..wont harm the environment!)

Alcohol fuels such as methanol and ethanol, are partially oxidized fuels and need to be run at much richer mixtures than gasoline. As a consequence, the total volume of fuel burned per cycle counterbalances the lower energy per unit volume, and the net energy released per cycle is higher.

carbon monoxide emissions are 100% lower than fossil-fueled engines because the only products of an alcohol combustion reaction are carbon dioxide (plants breath this), water (plants need this) , and heat .

Methanol is the lightest and simplest alcohol, produced from the natural gas component methane. Its application is limited due to its toxicity…..IT WILL KILL YOU!
PURE Ethanol, also known as grain alcohol or ethyl alcohol, is most commonly used in alcoholic beverages. However, it may also be used as a fuel….YOU CAN DRINK IT!..but dont because it is denatured so you CANT!

Methanol’s octane rating is 129 (RON), 103 (MON), which equates to 113 (AKI)
Ethanol's octane rating is 129 (RON), 102 (MON), which equates to 116 (AKI).
Gasoline is approximately 91 (RON), 81 (MON), equal to 86 (AKI)
AKI is 'Anti-Knock Index'
contrary to popular belief.....It should be noted that octane rating does not relate to the energy content of the fuel or heating value, nor the speed at which the flame initiated by the spark plug propagates across the cylinder. It is only a measure of the fuel's resistance to autoignition.

Ethanol is harder to ignite than Methanol.
Ethanol is less likely to have detonation than Methanol.

Ethanol has 27% less energy per Gallon than Gas.
Methanol has 55% less energy per Gallon than Gas.

This is why more volume is required for each of the Alcohol fuels and why Methanol take almost twice as much fuel as Ethanol over gasoline.

If gasoline is run at its preferred maximum power air/fuel mixture of 12.5:1 air/fuel ratio, it will release approximately 20 MJ (about 19,000 BTU) of energy, where ethanol run at its preferred maximum power mixture of 6.5:1 air/fuel ratio will liberate approximately 25.7 MJ (24,400 BTU), and methanol at a 4.5:1 air/fuel ratio liberates about 29.1 MJ (27,650 BTU).
Methanol makes the most power (29.1 MJ), but also takes more fuel than Ethanol to make that power…..
Apples to Apples….. Ethanol will out perform Methanol.
Methanol gets its power from the volume consumed.
Combustion:
Methanol combustion is: 2CH3OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 4H2O + heat
Ethanol combustion is: C2H5OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O + heat
CO2 = carbon dioxide (plants breath this)
H2O = water (plants need this) ,
heat = heat.

As you can see above, Methanol produces more water during combustion than ethanol. Methanol = 4H2O to Ethanol = 3H2O….
Hydrogen (H) may reduce knock by contributing its high thermal conductivity
Methanol has 4 hydrogens, Ethanol has 6 hydrogens,
= Ethanol absorbs more heat and therefor is more energy efficient, effeciency in the right conditions is power without the knock.
Given the higher octane rating of Ethanol, Modified engines are capable of generating equivalent or higher horsepower and torque burning Ethanol than conventional gasoline despite the lower energy density of Ethanol.

Alcohols higher octane allows an increase of an engine's compression ratio for increased thermal efficiency. In one study, complex engine controls and increased exhaust gas recirculation allowed a compression ratio of 19.5 with Ethanol to E50…..

With Ethanol thermal efficiency, up to approximately that for a diesel, was achieved.
This would result in the MPG (miles per gallon) of a dedicated ethanol vehicle to be about the same as one burning gasoline…..your not getting that with Methanol because of the volume needed to produce the power!

Hope this helps set some things clear……
