Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Engine starts then quits

It may be starving for fuel, but pumping the accelerator activates the accelerator pumps on the carbs, keeping it running a bit.

Try checking the fuel filter, fixed one like that at the sandbar a few weeks ago for a younger guy with a jet boat.  PM if you have more questions about it in case I don't get back to this thread.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Leaking Valve Cover
« on: June 16, 2009, 07:31:03 PM »
Which valve covers did you get?  I have mine custom made and engraved.  They are pricey but do not leak.

I recently looked at some cheaper imported ones and even at less than have the cost of mine, I would not put them on an engine that I build for someone.  The flange was thin, crude and rough, and nowhere near straight, I placed two of them flange to flange.

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you do hardend seats for a marine engine?

It gets real messy if one comes out!

Barry-

Shoot me the numbers on that carb and I can size it for you, a good friend of mine is a Demon guru.
Skip

Hey Skip,,, the color of the removeable venturi dictates the size, so just telling him "purple" should be enough?

I have a Barry Grant Demon RS (with removeable venturi).  I think it's currently got the 850 venturi in it, but could be changed.  I will have to get it out and see about photos, in extra nice condition if I recall.

I may have been wrong, not sure if purple venturi may be 750, but they can be changed.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: 454 vs 396
« on: June 04, 2009, 05:27:26 PM »
I have found both these motors for sale locally and am trying to figure out which one would be better for my boat. The guy says headers and everything from my old 454 will fit on the 396....any truth to that. Also will my rail kit work with a 396?

While the two engines should both fit, 58 cubic inches should net additional horsepower and torque given equal matching of components.  If you plan to put them straight into the boat, you need more information to make an educated choice.  A "performance" 396 may outperform a stock truck 454.  Also, if the 454 is a 1991 or newer engine, it will have parts that are different than the earlier ones.

I will be knowing exactly the difference is between a .060" 396, and a .030 454 will be here in a couple weeks  O0 With EVERYTHING being exactly the same, just cubic inch change

Bear in mind that the combination of heads and camshaft should be optimized for cubic inches, so if you are running the same cam and heads, you may not maximize your results.

I am in need of a Holley 950 double pumper with manual secondaries. I have money but can't afford a new one. I also have a freshly rebuild 800 marine carburetor if it floats your boat (No pun intended) that I would be willing to get rid of. Ran on my boat one day. Ran like a champ just not enough CFM for me. So if any one has one they want to part with or can give me any leads it would be great. Thanks, DJ

im really debating on whether or not to stroke the smallblock to a 383 for next summer. currently im at a 355 running 10:1. i dont know what cam it has in it. i use every bit of 400rpm. doesnt rev anymore than that. previous owner says it has 2.02 heads and they are camelback heads. i want a little more powers and still be able to use pump gas. would i be able to build the motor into a 383 for fairly cheap, and would a 383 be good for a jet?
and would it be fairly reliable?

A possible alternative, based on your stated facts might be to purchase a 400 inch sbc, and sell yours to someone for their Vette, if it is truly a Vette engine.  Might be cheaper than buying stroker parts for your block, and give you  a few more cubic inches in the mix.

I have built some 400 ci engines for a dirt modified race car with good success.  The one currently in the car actually has a stock crank and rods since the car owner didn't have the money to replace the damaged Carrillos and forged 4340 crank in the other combination we were running.

I have a Demon with the interchangeable venturi, currently an 850.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Fule pressure issues
« on: May 31, 2009, 09:15:28 AM »
Have you checked your fuel filter?

Personally, I would probably run a little more  fuel pressure, regardless, say 8-9 lbs.

Have you checked both float bowl levels?

You didn't give too many facts to go on, I assume it seems to be running correctly, no loss of power, surging or popping?

« on: May 23, 2009, 04:21:41 PM »
BTW im running the M55HV pump. Thats the high volume one. I REALLY dont want to take the engine out and change the pump. Could debris or assy lube be stuck in the filter bypass and cause this? because im using the same oil and filter that i broke it in with.  Im running the tall K&N filter btw. Im wondering if that 60 weight could have thickened it up enough to cause this issue. lol im pulling my hair out because im supossed to go to mojave valley this coming thurs to get the boat wet for its first time.

I assume you meant you have a 77HV pump, 55 is the sbc version I believe.  Try draining the oil, put some straight 40 wt racing oil in it and see if that doesn't give you a little more acceptable cold oil pressure.  It's the oil pump pressure bypass spring that has an effect on oil pressure, not the filter bypass.

We went ahead and assembled the engine with a 2 bolt, supposed to test wtih him at Puddingstone this week.  The photos of the build on on River Dave's in the Kustom Engine section.

I would still buy a block to have here if one came along.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: SUNKEN BOAT HELP!!!!
« on: May 05, 2009, 05:26:51 PM »
I have done several sunk engines, if you can't get to it right away, pickle it in diesel fuel, just fill it right to the top of the valve covers and through the carb, it won't hurt anything and is lighter than water so it keeps the air from getting to the exposed parts, which = no rust....I have let them sit like that for weeks and never had a problem (other than they stink like hell when you pull them apart)

Sucks to hear this kind of stuff, hopefully it shut down do to water on the ignition and not water in a cylinder or three. :-\

Good luck!

GT

Right, that's the old school way I always learned too, if you can't do something with it immediately.  Don't forget to pull the spark plugs and fill the cylinders too, after getting the water out.    I just pulled apart an engine yesterday that had sunk, been drained but apparently they forgot about doing anything to the cylinders,, lots of rust.

never never never put hypers in a marine applicatiion....they are too brittle when kept at high rpms for a long time.

i am no expert engine builder, but this is from experience and research i have done.

Lots of marine engines, or I should say engines running in boats, have cast or hypereutectic pistons, but probably not the best bet unless someone is on a super tight budget, and not planning to run the boat real hard.  Consider all the guys that stuff car or truck engines into a boat.

So, wouldn't say "never", but certainly a better idea to find the extra cash for forged as I suggested above.  Pretty sure they are available under $500, if not, check with me to see what I can do for you.

I'd go 7.75-8:1....but that just me  ;)

I didn't read this as being a blown engine?

I'M looking at the KB Hyper pistons and have a choice of about 8.9-1 or 9.9-1 compression, and want to know what the forum thinks.

8.9-1 with a little more timing or 9.9 and a little less timing (with pump gas)?

(for the technical guys, I have a set of 049, oval port heads with 122cc open chambers)

Consider maybe going to the KB forged pistons, not only will they be more durable, there is one with an 18.3 cc dome, would be more like 9.3-1.  They have two series of forged pistons, one slightly cheaper than the other.

Also, you could have the heads surfaced down a bit to give a little bump to compression also, regardless of which pistons you choose.

Oops , sorry that is the .100 over one. I also have a .060 one but I don't have pics of it. They are both E blocks.

Is it a fresh bore?  If so,, you had better be on your way to grab that deal Jason.

Barry , cores (BBC blocks, heads) are gettin harder to find huh !, I've been useing/buying Gen 5s and line boring etc to save Mark 4's I'll check with my guys monday for ya Tom

Thanks Tom, I have no problem running the Gen 6 castings, not sure why some guys don't like them.

He already has an all new MK IV forged 496 kit and a fixed budget that he can't exceed or his wife will end up in jail for murder.

I figured a quick post might find someone to help him out, I have a few but none that would fit his bore or budget requirements, and I hate to have everything else "right" and put it in a 2 bolt.  He can't afford to have the 2 bolt block converted either.  A few weeks ago it seemed like 4 bolt blocks were everywhere, but I didn't have the time and space to go grab them up.

WTB / Need a 4 bolt BBC block ASAP
« on: May 02, 2009, 10:54:16 PM »
I have an engine customer on a very strict budget who im building a 496 BBC for, but he would like a 4 bolt block instead of the 2 bolt he currently has.  Needs to be able to clean at .060.  The rest of his forged bottom end is all new, so I hate to see him "settle" for a 2 bolt block.

If anyone has something, I will have him complete the deal with you so you know it isn't me trying to turn a profit on one.

Barry
