I use 2% thoriated on everything. You shouldn't use pure on an advanced square wave machine like a miller dynasty. For these blocks I was on a synchro wave 300. Sharp pointed 1/8" tungsten, #8 cup, 200 amps, balance was set to about 8 on the balance/dig control I think. The pointed electrode allows less arc wander than a balled tungsten and is less prone to tungsten spitting. You want to adjust the balance to where you have just enough cleaning to get the job done. I coulda turned the cleaning down on these a little but I didn't clean them before I welded them. Turning it more towards dig will cause the AC cycle to spend more time at the negative portion of the cycle and will shrink the white cleaning action closer to the bead. The cleaning action should be fairly close to the toelines of the weld. I'd say anywhere from 1/8"-1/4" or so.

A little note about AC aluminum welding. Aluminum has an oxide layer on it that is almost as hard as diamond and has a higher melting point than the metal below it. That's why we use AC.
AC is essentially dc - then dc+ repeated over and over.
Dc - focuses the heat towards the base metal. (penetrates)
Dc+ focuses the heat towards the tungsten. (cleans)
Balance control changes the time spent at each cycle.
Too much cleaning results in lack of penetration and a melted tungsten.
Too much penetration (dig) results in a sink hole type puddle that is not clearly defined.
The trick is the puddle will turn a shiny chrome color (think terminator 2 bad guy)
When the puddle turns that color only then add filler. If you try before that then the filler will melt and not join to anything ( think solder dropping on the ground)

Very cool thank you for the explanation. I have some TIG but nothing formal as far as instruction. I am working with a Miller Dialarc HF. thing is a dinosaur, but its what I have to work with right now.  Ill eventually start a new thred with some of my practice pieces.

Definately lean pop. Or you have an exhaust leak at the head. It's not going to hurt anything. If you have a fuel screw adjust it to richen it up a bit. Remember how much you turned it so you can put it back to where it was when you get home.

Oh didn't even think of an exhaust leak, yeah if it is a leak it can be fatal. You risk burning down a valve. But I am almost positive it is a fuel mixture issue

Ok I started the hit storm so I have to deal with it. Brad pic won't load with what I was pointing at so I'll have to wait until I can get to. My lap top later. I was told parts were used but nice no cracks. I even asked him about it. I get the part and it's bent yes I could be repaired but what would you do if you were sold something and when you received it, it was different or damaged. That's all I am saying. No I am not a bad customer at all just don't like being messed with. Like i said don't want 200 back just what was agreed upon.  And yes like sandeggo says...  Should have just sacked up and bought new. I could go on but won't I am going to let this die and end here. Like I said before initially I though Marc was a good guy and was going to help out and get this resolved, didn't happen that way. Only contact ever made was instigated by me. Also how am I suppose to feel when texts an calls don't get answered or returned I eventually stopped trying. It shouldn't take two or three months to get something taken care of. End of subject.

Brad I understand your view. I have a dispute with my credit card company going to resolve this. like I said I waited for the money/part, but texts/phonecalls stopped getting answered. like I said before parts were dammaged he didn't know and I didn't know until it was brought to attention when I un packaged the parts. The reason why I say months is because the whole deal has been going on since October. Yes I wanted a new mount instead of a full refund(at first) because I felt that Marc genuinely did not know the parts were dammaged. You know what I mean sometimes shit happens and I feel really the parts being sold is a case of just that. My problem is that a deal was then made and was never completed. When I found a mount(took one phone call) I let Marc know and again a deal was made for Marc to order the part(never happened).So I ended up ordering it(almost two weeks later). Again got ahold of Marc and reached an agreement that he would reimburse the price of the part(i would eat the shipping), he said i would have to wait until he got paid, which was around Christmas. I said that is fine as long as it happens....Well it never happened and that was the last I heard from him until this. Like I said before I don't think he is a bad guy I think the ball was just dropped.As far as you making things right with Marc that is your business not mine and you guys do what you see fit. As far as the call out. you are right it was a bit childish, but how would you feel if you were in my shoes  and the guy you bought the parts from cut all forms of comunication? This was the only way to get a response. And yes I know call out threads damn near never end well. In retrospect yes that is my fault  and I was not looking that far ahead. Like I said before Brad dowhat you see fit with this thread I appologise for crapping on your site.,

There is this thin called a phone when something doesn't work you pick it up an call, like I did multiple times so much so that you stopped answering said calls. Just as the title says. Long story short, bought some parts from a member in September, they were not as described and  I had given ample opportunity to make good on the deal as agreed to by the seller. But here were are months later and still no close to this deal. I wanted to take the nice guy approach since this is a fairly small group, but so far this has not gotten me anywhere. I know what has to be done to resolve this issue. and have already put it in motion. Just feel it should have never come to this Overall very dissapointed in the whole deal.

Not to hijack but yeah Dana19 you really need to learn how to weld ally. I am learning/teaching myself right now and its a blast. I love welding and am pretty damn good with a mig and now I have tig to challenge and its a whole different ball game.

Theres a circle race that weekend at puddingstone. Its lookin maybe the last weekend of march. Not 100% confirmed. There is a conflicting event the same weekend im trying to sort out.

You ready for TPM? If so remember, we like pics.

If it were my boat I would cut the transom out to clear and build a recess in the top n weld it in to seal that section further forward on the pump.  Only problem is, unless you get crafty and do some flange work inside the recess the plates will have to be split horizontally instead of vertical.
