Thanks for the help guys, Yeh I could buy a new one, I've always thought was strange to drop the voltage to the coil. I'm with 80nordic I always thought the resistor was for the dist. not the coil . Like I said this is hou it was hooked up when I bought it. If I run it without the ballast check to see if the coil gets hot? I don't care to much for paddling. ;D  oh I just saw hd's earlier post. she's a cheby.

It is not for the coil. The coil doesn't care how much voltage it gets to a point - but that is how an MSD works - it boosts that voltage.

The resistor wire is to limit current and therefore heat through a device. Most people can't measure current, so that is why its expressed in voltage.

The items that need a current limiter (ballast or resistor wire) - points, unilite modules, some ignition control / amplifier boxes. Coils, MSD's, Hyfires, etc do NOT need any current limiting and can be run direct without (though the resistor wire doesn't hurt either because that wire usually turns on another power feed).

You can run any of them without the ballast for a short period of time, but it will eventually overheat and burnout or in the case of points, cause severe pitting (and then no worky no more).

If you only have 1 volt, the ballast is bad. Splurge the 1.99 and get a new one :-)

I agree. I said if it is on the wrong side it can cause hard starting.

Most likely if it starts but dies when the key is released, the ballast is bad.

What I meant was the wire to provide the 12 v during starting may be on the wrong side. See attached diagram - yellow wire connected to the blue instead of the red.

Ignore the Mopar box, that would be replaced with whatever you are using. If you have points or a unilite - the light blue and the box would be unused, and the black would go to the green points or unilite module wire.

Most carbs came with a 65 power valve. If you have a cam with less than 232 duration @ .050, that will probably be the one you want.

No, but you can have the run wire on the wrong side causing hard starting.

I think I read the first post wrong. :banghead: Copper Canyon use to be fun. Lots of cops patrol it now so the titty flingin just isnt what it use to be. Still kinda fun. The sandbar is up river once you get past the island by the london bridge. I hear that place is still fun. Are you going to be on the river or on Lake Havasu?

I'm in OC, so it's the same drive to everywhere. I need a wild place for me and the wife, or for guys trips - and I need a mellow to reasonable place when I have my 3 year and 8 year old with me. 

Basically, I need input on where things are, what they are like, and decide the trip based on that and what I am going for. I think the last time I was at london bridge, it was 1979 and I was with my parents.  I would say my data is a little stale.

Just get the right bolt - and one or two progressively longer (each 1/2 to 1 inch longer with the threads going past where the other one starts), and just screw it on.

I guess I should add the reason you see the blower cams out at 114, is becuase they have lower dynamic compression which is made up for by the increased boost.

HR56 - So why do you want the duration all the way out at 280 if you plan to use it in the 240-250 duration range (6K max RPM according to your post) ? To me that's just giving up power.  However, that said - Make sure whatever cam you use matches with the static compression you have. Personally, I'm at 246  (@.050) duration at 10.2:1 . I also have a 286 (@.050) duration cam with 12:1 , and a 228 (@.050) duration cam with 9.3:1 (this one is the hardest to keep from pinging).

I've had a bunch of wine, so I probably shouldn't answer BUT I'll try anyway...


First you have to understand what lobe separation and lobe centerline is and that they are different.

The centerline is just that, the center of the opening and closing of the valve. You have one for intake (ICA) and one for exhaust (ECA).  It is the average of the duration for the most part (yes there are asymetrical cams,but not tonight)

Lobe separation angle (LSA) is the intake (ICA) and the exhaust (ECA) averaged.

A cam with a 103 ICA and 117 ECA has a lobe separation angle (LCA) of 110 degrees  ((ICA+ECA)/2).
BUT So does a cam with a 110 ICA and 110 ECA, that is also a cam with a 110 LCA....

Anything that causes the intake valve to shut sooner will cause more dynamic compression and a more likelyhood of detonation. Basically, it is the ICA and intake duration that determines how friendly the engine is to gas, not the LCA or ECA.

If you compare the same cam with a 110 LC but with the ICA moved around - the one with an ICA of 103 will ping over a cam with an ICA of 114 because that intake valve closes sooner. However, it will make more power if you don't ping. When you advance or retard a cam, you are changing the ICA, not the LCA.

A 10:1 engine with a 280 degree cam will run on regular all day long, while a 9:1 engine with a 200 degree duration cam will have a hard time with even premium.

Remember - if you have a pinging problem - go BIGGER!

Can I turn a shaft that has some grooves in it? What would would the min diameter be? I don't think I need to turn it much, but it is definately worn where the seals and bearings go.

My impellor has deep grooves where the wear ring is, it looks like I would need to replace that, correct? Or is this all normal stuff I shouldn't worry about?

Usually you find the ICA that the cam is supposed to be at - and degree it so that is where it is and move it from there. Advancing the cam 4 degrees from installed, isn't the same as advancing it 4 degrees from where it should have been....

I'm going to buy one of three cams, not sure which because i don't know what I'm looking at.  :banghead:  Originally I was going to have a cam designer/builder custom grind me a cam, but thats no longer an option ($$$). They're all really close to being the same... but a little different. Headers are dry SS. Looking for max HP, the lower in the RPM range the better.


Donny at Herbert cams ground me a custom roller for $200.

A Power adder is NOS, Turbo, or Blower. Usually with a power adder you want a wider lobe separation to take advantage of the increased torque. Personally, I ignore that, and set it up for naturally asperated, and figure I can bump the boost or increase the jet for more power.

The lower the RPM the shorter the duration. I usually pick the duration based on the RPM I want, then get the max lift I can find out of that. If you go for maxpower, you also want to compare the adv duration and the duration @ .050. The smaller the difference, the steeper the ramp, and the more power you will make.

Lift and ramp = HP (higher and faster is more)
Duration @ .050 = RPM range (lower is lower)
lobe center = Curve (higher = flatter)

That RPM range you are picking is a 3500-7000 range, give or take on the grind and lobe separation (previously covered).


I personally like the tight lobe centers - the powerband is narrower but higher. For me (and YMMV), I know my jet will be running 3500-5500, so having a torque curve that works from 2800-7500 really isn't optimal. I'm giving up peek HP for a wider operating range that I wouldn't be using.

Given you want the power band a little lower, I'd probably go for the

I don't see anything wrong with that separation, that's pretty normal nowadays. On the old grinds, they always kept thinks the same, LC 100, ICA 110 - Now crane, etc all move things around to optimize the cam.

:o  Thats a big gap.  You should however wait and measure that clearance again after everything else is rebuilt.  If you use a shouldered wear ring alot may change.   

With that much clearance the pumpshaft may have been cut to move the impeller forward, in an effort to tighten up front side clearance(sometimes the impeller hub is cut instead).  Thats an old practice pump builders did b4 shouldered wear rings, and some still do. Often times they would also cut the register on the bowl to tighten up back side clearence (no stuffer needed).

That was the other thing I was thinking of doing, cutting a bit off of the bowl - but I figured that would be more trouble than adding a stuffer. Any thoughts either way?

Totally off subject here.........

We also have 2 M60A3 tank engines-  Continental AVDS-1790-2C 865 hp V-12 engines and Allison CD-850-6/6A powershift crossdrive transmissions. 865BHP @1800rpms 2600lb/ft @1700 out of 24.7 litres-quad turbos. Weighing in at 8000 lbs. Come get 'em we don't even want money for them. They still run, we were gonna use them as generators.

Gee, if I could find about a 47 foot cat to drop those into, it would be perfect :-)

Now, seriously, that would take an a4 impeller, right :-)
