Everything good on topside and after chasing everything out I had a few plugs that had backed out and was causing the loss of vacuum drawing fuel into a couple of cylinders.
But.......The story gets worse! That vibration I felt after sucking up gravel into the pump which caused me to rebuild the pump...... is still there and even with the coupler disconnected from the driveline.
So as the world turns, now the motor is coming back out to pull the oil pan and take a closer look at the crankshaft

Thanks, It makes more sense than anything at this point.
What are some things i need to look for besides being loose?
Is there a high possibility of major damage or is it most likely just a re-adjustment issue?
I'm sure there's no way to tell but i'm just hoping for minimal damage.

I'm hoping that was from it being out of adjustment and stopped allowing the valves to open then?

I have another Avenue to look at when I get back to the shop on tuesday. Being as I have no fuel going into cylinders 2 and 5 and I did hear a little of a rattle like a sheet metal (very faint) but I'm wondering if a couple of poly locks have failed and it's backed of so far out of adjustment that there not opening the intake valves? Maybe just an adjustment and hopefully no serious damage or anything bent.
Maybe this could be the cause?
It did get a vibration in it towards the end of the day on the last time it was out....

I'm not sure which port on the carb he hooked his Gauge up to, I was on the other side of boat, but let's assume the big port on the bottom plate of the carb... how much should it read ? When im Looking into the carb I'm not seeing fuel coming off the "hoop looking things". Are they supposed to have fuel misting off of them at idle?

I believe it about 6.5. I had a gauge on the 850 dp and havent changed the fuel pressure but I dont have a pressure gauge on it right now.

I just installed a tunnel ram on my 460 with 2 holley 600 carbs and it won't run right. Both carbs are supposed to be rebuilt and ready to go but it seems like the front ones acting up. I pulled it apart and sprayed all passages with carb cleaner but no change. It runs like 1/2 the motors not firing. If you pull plugs 2 and 5 nothing changes, but they are firing. I put a spark plug in the wire and it sparked. So it would seem no fuel to those cylinders..?
It has 15 lbs vacuum at idle and 19 while revving.
Both floats are set right and its getting fuel to the bowls, but if you look down in the carb you dont see fuel.
Once you rev it, it gets better but still has a miss in it.
Any clue what could be wrong?

I bought one of these too. I agree, seems like a good product for the money. Would have liked to had color choices but that's the only gripe I have with it.

« on: May 12, 2014, 06:05:40 PM »
I bought them for my headers and you will be surprised how quiet it makes it. I couldn't take it and cut mine in half. I keep them in the boat (just in case) but they are still way too quiet. The one I have look like auger bits and seriously it takes the open header sound and turns it into as quiet as my factory chevy tahoe exhaust.

They came without chokes and long vent tubes 6.5 4 window hp power valves high flow needle valves 110 66 jets number 9 rear metering plates 25 squirters and quick fuel adjustable vacume housings. What would be the recommendation on a carb size for my boat? I know it kinda is hit and miss but right now I have a 850 dp carb and wonder if there's more to be had. It's a stock 460 with dove c heads with the larger valves, 27h cam,  roller rockers, offenHauser tunnel ram intake. Right now it's setup with the single carb top on it but I have the dual carb plate.
It runs very clean with the 850 holly but I thought about trying two Carter 625 carbs or I have dominator 1200 cfm that I can get from a buddy.
I'm just looking for opinions on if that's pushing it too much for a fairly stock motor.
Thanks

Update
I guess i got lucky. The pump is now back in the boat after a wrestling match from hell with the impelller. We ended up having to cut it off but its now all back together and much tighter. There was not rocks or any damage in the bowl or impeller beyond a few dings but I got the master rebuild kit so I replaced it anyway. It had however been hitting the wear ring so thats where the chirping had been coming from. The bowl bearings may have had a little wear being as they are more like bushings than bearings its hard to tell and the old thrust bearing seemed ok.
The u bolts on the universal joint were also a little loose so im sure thats where most of the vibration was coming from so I dont want to say I wasted time and money rebuilding the pump but Its all fresh and now I dont have to worry about the condition of it anymore.

With the specs I have listed can someone estimated what hp I should be at? It's fairly stock...

Also, im guessing that getting the right clearance with the wear ring is done by shimming the impeller?

Thanks

Im going to go ahead and order the master overhaul kit. It does give the option of adding a different impeller when ordering.

Should I just order the kit with the A impeller and cut it down later if need be or go ahead and order a different one. If im understanding this right, the A is the starting point and everything else is a smaller or cut down size?

I did look inside the pump front and rear with a bore scope and did not see and rocks or debris or any damage thus far, that might change when I get it apart but looks ok at this point. I really think the bearings are in need of replacement and under load its letting it move.

I did try and see if I could feel any play on the shaft but since its still attached to the motor and the thrust bearing it wont let me.

Its an offenhauser intake so yes I can add a different top and add the 2nd carb

Yes thats the cam kit I have in the motor

DO you have to remove the motor, or can you remove the entire pump. I see all the you tube videos and I thought I saw one that they tilted the suction housing down?
Not sure, may have been a different pump?

After looking at some more posts here and realized that when i put it in the water i sucked up a lot of gravel too. I wonder if I can look inside with one of those inspection cameras and see if thats why I had so much vibration?  It still doesnt fix the squeal problem but might be why it was a little slower than usual.

Is there an impeller that would act like changing the rear end of a car for top speed? I know someone said that going to a B impeller would be like putting 411 gears in. Is the A impeller already the higher gear ratio?
