The same number, MB2403P, is stamped on the upper shell as well as a date code, the size at 0.010, Clevite 77, and the A1.  Date codes are different for the upper and lowers.

I don't have the package any more but the order sheet from Summit reads CLE-MS829P10    http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CLE%2DMS829P10&autoview=sku

Any ideas on what the "A-1" stands for ? 

Looks like we finish off the trailer wheel bearings and wiring today and let the motor go until next weekend.

The block was line honed.  For some reason the machinist reversed the #1-4 caps, but he restamped them with the new assembly order.  Cast arrow is pointing forward on caps #1-4.

I'm checking all caps including the rear main.  On #1 I also measured at 30* and 150* (90* being at the bottom of the cap).  Appears to be in round.

I'm using a 1" piece of Plastigage so I can check taper on the journals, but all are consistent.

Checked the bearing shells and they're stamped Clevite 77, A-1, .010, MB2403P

Been torquing all 4 bolts per cap to #105.

I think the block needs to go back to the machine shop on Monday unless I figure out something this morning.

Bought the micrometer set from Harbor Freight today, $43.95 + tax.  Double checked them and the included reference blocks against a friends Starrett.  I was amazed, they matched perfectly. 

The crank measures out at 2.740, which is perfect for a 0.010 cut.

Bolted down a main cap and torqued it to #105.  Tried to use the telescoping inside gauge that I also picked up from Harbor Freight.  It's supposed to expand to the inside diameter, then you use the outside calipers to measure it.  It's a POS that has at least 10 mils of slop in it, no way to get a reliable measurement.

Wiped all the assembly lube off the crank and repeated my earlier measurements with the Plasigage.  Still reading 0.0015.

So I've got a crank that's spot on and :

1)  A bad set of Clevite 77 bearing shells,
2)  A bad line bore,
3)  ?

Thanks guys, and I just noticed I posted in the wrong category   :screwy:

Temp would have been in the 75F range here in the shop last night. 

The other thing I did that may have screwed up the reading was smearing some assembly lube in the upper bearing shell before setting the crank in place.  Is it possible that this could be keeping the crank from being centered?

Harbor Freight is less than a mile away.  I bought my digital 6" calipers there, but those are only good for + 5 mil accuracy.  I never considered looking to HF for a precision device but I'm running down there in a few minutes.  I'll buy the suggested snap gauge (even though I have no clue what that is right now).

Started putting the motor (468" BBC) together last night for the kid's boat.  The main journal clearances checked out at 0.0015" - 0.0017" which is tight.  Who has used Plasigage recently, is it reliable, or is it now made offshore and is crap?

Rely on the machine shop to have done their job right?  Close my eyes and go forward?

A set of inside/outside micrometers is around $1,000.00 through MSC or McMaster-Carr, that's kinda out for a once every four or five year activity.

Was the original "spacer" there to adapt the square bore Holley to the cast iron spread bore manifold?  Are you using a Performer or Performer RPM manifold now?

Does the engine then get the regulated water supply and the exhaust manifolds get unrestricted flow?  Can you build up excessive heat in the exhaust manifolds and rubber tubing to the exhaust tips while waiting for the thermostat to open? 

What temperature of thermostat is recommended?  I see 140* mentioned, any guidelines for choosing the temperature?  This is primarily a Havasu boat.

I'll be plumbing the intercooler's heat exchangers as well.  I assume these want a continuous but pressure limited supply of filtered cool water.  If I "T" off the water supply after the pressure relief do I need to add a gate valve or some type of restrictor for the intercooler supply?

Do you need to install the relief valve only if you're running a thermostat in the housing?  Seems like without a major restriction in the water path it would be hard to build that much pressure up through the block, heads, and exhaust manifolds (Sh.t through a goose kind of thing).

Duratek is great stuff!  You can spray it through a preassure pot or just use a tight foam roller.  Sands like chalk and doesn't pack up sandpaper like normal polyester/microsphere fillers do.  I've sprayed it up 1/16" thick (2 passes) to level out really screwed up surfaces.

Be careful using LP's paints like Imron, Awl-Grip, Sterling, etc. below the waterline if you leave your boat in the water for more than the day.  Run it to the boot stripe and stop there.  The paint will develop very small (<.030" dia) blisters/bubbles that don't fully go away with time.

Don't know yet.  The two younger boys are eyeing for their 19 footer but the compression ratio on their new motor is at 8.5 or 8.75:1.  That's a bit tight for a non-intercooled Roots application. 

If I don't cave in to them then I'll sell it, the EFI spacer/injectors, and the Enderle hat as a package deal fairly cheap.  Pulleys are a 52/50 tooth set for a 3" belt.  Idler brackets mount to the blower.  Manifold is a Crager as I remember.  I'll know within the week what the plan will be.

The intercooler elements are $300 a set new.  I assume you remove them and backflush with diluted pool acid on a periodic basis, but I'll bet you can plug them up instantly by getting in too shallow of water.  McMaster-Carr offers 100% stainless steel cartrige water filters for around $150 with a 10GPM/250PSI rating and filtering down to 2 micron diameters.  These may filter too good and clog prematurely.

My other thought is to use a tube-in-shell heat exchanger (which we use in our product line - $0.00  ;D) and allow the intercoolers their own dedicated loop (perhaps making a pass or two through the ice chest in the process)  I would only need supply a small circulation pump.

My wife accuses my of overanalyzing issues to the point of paralysis.  I have no clue where she gets that idea from  ::)

Thanks, these look perfect but ouch ($$$).  I'll take a look in McMaster's and Grainger's for an "industrial" model rather than one with the "marine" label attached.  I'm assuming that these service only the water demands of the intercooler.

Thanks for the quick responses!

The raw water strainers in my sportfisher take out anything larger than an 1/8" or so, just a stainless steel perf metal basket sitting in a Lexan/brass vessel.  Are you recommending something with a paper or metal mesh filter or ?  What water flow rates are required by the intercoolers, 4 GPM or so?  Should I now add some type of water pressure regulator to my entire cooling system, or just the intercooler inlets?

Probably going to do this project as a draw thru throttle body with digital port injection on a Victor manifold.  Used to have a 6-71 on this motor so the block is ready to go.  "O" ringed 4 bolt 468 BBC, copper head gaskets, steel crank, 7.5:1 forged TRW blower pistons, all turning an AA impeller.

I'll post pics when the kit arrives tomorrow.

Hello all,

Just picked up an older PFM twin turbo kit for the 20 Spectra. 

My question concerns the water supply to the twin water/air intercoolers.  For those of you with a similar installation - do you bring raw water from the pump directly or do you maintain a dedicated and clean fresh water loop on board using a water/water heat exchanger?  Should I be paranoid about sand and river muck accumulating in the intercoolers?

Exactly right.  There is a crossover passage then two lengthwise passages, one per side.  The longways get plugged just to the inside of the bolt holes that fasten the hat to the blower.

The injectors are 85lb/hr Holleys.  Low impedance (PITA) but 2 for $25 new on ebay.

Controller is a MegaSquirt which is built and tested from the basic kit (CPU and PCB).  We will have around $600 invested in the complete EFI system (including the Enderle Bugcatcher) when done.

We've taken a slightly differen approach on the same theme.  We're using the high capacity Holley injectors and feeding internal to the spacer body.  This way there are no exposed injector rails.  The fuel is supplied to the smaller holes in the bridge between the two sides.

Sorry about the duration.  I stated the "advertised" in the first post, at 0.050" it is a 226/236 degree cam.  It's very close to the Crane cam I run in my boat (an old man's cruiser  ;D)

Basic long slot 1.72:1 rockers are being used.

As far as max RPM the lower end is built to take a bit.  Forged steel crank, "H" beam rods, recip assembly fully balanced.  I don't want to have to worry about the abuse an 18 and 20 year old will give it.  It should be perfectly safe at 5,500-6,000 RPM.

Log exhaust for now but we do have a set of Bassetts hanging from the rafters, perhaps later on.  These logs reduce down to 2.75" ID hoses so they're a bit more restrictive than the ones on my boat.

I'm finishing off the build of the new motor for my kids 19' Spectra and have the gut feeling I've gone too conservative in the cam choice (still in the box at the moment though).  468" BBC, 8.75:1 forged K-B, Dart Iron Eagle heads, Performer RPM manifold, log exhaust manifolds for the moment and an "A" impeller.  Staying with the existing 780 Holley for a carb.

The cam I just bought from Summit was the Comp Cams XM 270 (11-236-4).  It's a flat tappet hydraulic with 270/286 and .544/.547" lift. 

Does anyone out there run this cam and are they happy with it?  Do you feel you could have used a bit/lot more?

You can always treat it after the fact with either Alodine #1001 (clear) or #1201 (normal green/gold color).  You apply it full strength if brushed on, or dilute 3:1 if dipping.  I get it from Aircraft Spruce, around $35.00/gallon.  A gallon of the #1201 will do 20-30 Holley carbs to like new condition.

Both of our Spectra's run older 780 Holley's with the air horns milled flat and radiused.  Stock these come with dual feeds and dual metering blocks.  Notes from the 20' say 74 pri /78 sec jetting.

Usually can be had complete for $50 or less on ebay or craigs.

The machine shop/engine builder I go to recommends and uses Joe Gibbs Racing oil for break-in.  I mix in a quart on every oil change.  For "off-road" use only.  ;D

Twelve years ago I painted my 20' Spectra with Awl Grip marine LP, using a roller, in my front driveway.  The paint still looks very good today even though it has never been wet sanded, rubbed out, or even waxed.  Cost was around $120 total, used less than a quart of red and a pint of white, plus catalyst, reducer, and accelerator.

I invite you to come over and look at it since you're local.  I have enough white paint laying around the shop for you to do your boat.  You'll just have to buy some epoxy primer and roller sleeves.
