I've checked and adjusted float bowl levels. The fuel water seperator is brand new. I'm also running a high flow inline fuel filter in between the fuel pump and regulator.

It runs fine it's just the color of the plugs has me worried especially with the hotter weather fast approaching.

I'm thinking about going out today but IDK this problem is buggin me.

I'm having fuel pressure issues. I installed a new Clay Smith mechanical fuel pump on my BBF and I'm running a holley adjustable fuel pressure regulator with a small russel inline gauge.

I set the pressure to 6.5 psi and after it warms up under the hatch the pressure drops to 3.5-4 psi. I had assumed it was just the gauge because I've had issues with these little inline gauges before and have been running it like this for about a month now. I pulled a  couple plugs friday night just to see how things were going and all the plugs looked brand new (white). So I pulled the carb (850 dp) and jetted up. I was running 80's front and rear with no rear power valve. I went up to 82 in the front and 84 in the rear. Took it out saturday and ran it for a while did a full throttle pass and shut down. Pulled plugs and they still look the same. Then I went up to 86 in the rear and it's still the same. I'm starting to think it might be the fuel pump.

Any ideas?

I hate to rain on everyone's parade but has anyone thought to look into the legal issues involved? Or maybe nobody cares?

I mean this boat belongs to someone. Either the owner or some insurance company that paid the owner when it sank. I can picture the look on the rangers face when he pulls up and sees a bunch of pirates trying to salvage this boat. ;D

I'm down to help you guys out but I don't want to end up in trouble either.

 The reason I asked about the intake was because it doesn't look familiar to me.  It might be an aftermarket low profile intake.  If it is I would think it would need a special loader (not sure on this).  Take a good look at it for any names or numbers.  Someone should be able to ID it so you know what your working with.

 I'll leave the other questions for those with more experience then me.   ;)


I will try and get a better look at the intake tommorow in the day light. I'll get some pics also. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for all the help. I'll try and answer all the questions as best I can.

As far as what kind of intake it is. I have no idea. Sorry

The current loader is about an 1/8" above the bottom of the boat. I do not have the stock rock grate either the boat came to me with this loader already installed.

Ride plate is 14 1/2" from the longest points on the front to the rear.

The boat will porpoise like crazy if the roost is not set level to the water or below @ cruising speed. At WOT it can go all the way up no problem.

As far as weight goes I try not to carry anything more than I need. I come from a car drag racing background so I know how crucial weight can be. The GPS speed was with me and my girl, both tanks were about 3/4's full.

My only issue with a full droop is my boat cover. I had a custom cover made last summer $$$ and it covers the whole pump and swim steps and all the way down the sides of the boat. I don't think it would fit if the pump is another 4" or so longer.

What would be a good loader to get?

Where would I get a longer rideplate?

So what about some bowl work? No? Not worth it?

Again I really appreciate all the help.

Oh yeah, what RPM are you turning at the 57.5 MPH? Where is your diverter set? You should see about a 3'-5' rooster tail about 100' off the boat, once you find that sweet spot, you'll be golden.

Let me know if you want to do the droop deal, also keep me up to snuff on how the changes do.

The motors at 4750rpm's with the A. Previously it had a B in it and was seeing 54mph @4900rpms. Granted that impeller was pretty chewed up, it had some rock chunks missing courtesy of the previous owner.

As far as diverter setting. I have seen the best results with the roost just about 1-2 feet above the water. I'm still gonna experiment some more with that.

The hull has no hook and rides rather high out of the water already. I have read that a full droop is usually not good for bigger boats but I have though about experimenting anyways.

Don't forget to torque your lug nuts! I check mine every time I head out.

Had a wheel fly off the trailer on the way back from lake tahoe last year. That sucked!

Pretty sure some fine citizen loosend my lug nuts while the boat and trailer were parked on the street the night before I left.

So the stupid bug won't go away and I'm constantly thinking of ways to get just a little more MPH out of my tank of a jet boat. I'm at 57.5 mph on gps rite now and would like more...

So without tearing into the motor (to late in the season for that). Is there anything else I can do to the pump to get me some more mph? The pump is a fresh 12jg with a new aluminum A impeller from JBP, has a ride plate set a 2 1/2 degrees up, loader of unknow brand, Place HPH, Hydraulic diverter.

I know the bowl has a a few nicks in the entry fins. I cleaned it up as best I could with a file and such. So do you think my boat would benifit from any further bowl work? Extrude hone? Porting? American turbine bowl? Maybe a full droop snoot?

Anything else that I'm missing?

Yeah I thought about the black getting hot but all the other billet on the boat is black, so IDK. I'm still not 100% on those yet.

So I figured I would start my own project thread. There has already been a lot of projects completed but the list never seems to end. The most recent project was the pump. I knew the old "B" impellor had seen better days and it was leaking a decent amount of water at the packing gland also. After talking with Tom @ JBP the pump was pulled and shipped to him. He did a full rebuild, installed a new alluminum "A" impellor and a new 17-4 shaft. He also stripped and repainted the pump and made some new aluminum transom adapters too.

After hours of scrapping silicone off the transom and a little polish work on the bell housing.



Fresh pump awaiting install.



Sand blasted and repainted the pump brace while I was waiting to get the pump back.



I also sent Tom my transom adapters so he could make me some new ones out of aluminum.

The finished product with the HPH and Place diverter I purchased from JBP last year. Set the ride plate to 2 1/2 degrees up. Ready to roll.



The boat GPS'd 54 mph @4900rpm with the old pump set up and with the new pump set up it GPS'd 57.5 mph @4750. It dosen't cavitate at all and gets out of the hole way better than it ever did with the old pump. A big thanks to Tom and his crew at JBP for all the hard work.

That looks like the Lake Mead I know! HaHa.

It's a very nice lake don't get me wrong and there are days where the water is perfect. It just seems there are more rough days than calm.

Hardin marine claims they clear moroso tall valve covers. Not sure how tall they are.

I already have the long bolt logs too. If you don't think I'm gonna gain anything I'm not gonna waste my time. I'll keep looking for a better set. Or maybe run the adapter plates and run some Chevy manifolds.

I'm just trying to get some more power out of it without tearing into the motor yet.
