Turns out that with everything assembled I had -.035 clearance. I need .005 to .010. It just so happens that the gasket material I have is .030 thick. So one gasket later, I have .005 clearance, and everything is happy, esp me.  ;D

One side goes into the timing chain which buts up against the cam and has three bolts holding it in. The washers for the timing chain overlap the hole by just enough to secure a cam button (it has a grove cut into it for this).

The button itself has a roller mechanism, so the tip is designed to hit the stock timing cover and be locked down. The part hitting the cover shouldn't turn, but the roller allows the cam to turn normally but won't let it move front to back (the back is locked in by the rear cam plug).

The issue was I had nothing for the button to hit with the glenwood mounts.

The cloyes button comes with a hard washer to weld to the cover if you have issues, need additional length, clearance, etc. My plan was to run without that washer and cut the .700 aluminum stop until I had the proper clearance. Later, if it looked like the aluminum was getting worn - then secure the washer to the end for the cam to hit (obviously cutting the .700 diam part). This is why I actually made the stop longer than it needed to be - just in case I needed to do this.





My Milodon gear drive has only an aluminum bump like what I made, and they last a long time.

Marcsrollin - I got the V drive mounts for 100 bucks off of ebay - remember I'm building a BB mopar, so there aren't a lot of mount options available to me. They are exactly the correct width for my stringers, and other than no where to put a thrust button, seemed to be perfect. I'll be running the mounts "V drive backwards (which is forwards for the rest of us). They happen to match my valve covers, and the rear mount allows me to have a starter too (Mopar starters bolt to the trans, not to the engine).

HR56 - Took about 3 hours of milling to create this...

Just made my cam button plate for my mounts - 3 x 1.5 inch aluminum, dropped to 1.375 for 1/2 inch, then reduced again to .700 to clear the cam bolts.

Raised area and nipple to make it look less home made and more store bought...overall I'm pretty happy with it...3 hours of cutting...

If the Olds driveline bolts directly to the flywheel, then no, you can't use it. You will either need a 1310 driveline to fit your existing Mopar PTO, or a 1350 driveline and a 1350 Mopar PTO. Unless you are running real big power the 1310 will suffice. The 1310 driveline is easier to find used and new ones cost about 1/2 of what a 1350 costs.

You should have asked .  :D Your gonna have to get the points style . Chevy's sometimes have the same problem . HEI's are renowned for doing this , I didnt know having the dizzy in the right place would also be a problem for the ford's

I agree, if it was in the right place it wouldn't be a problem - the right place is leaned over in the front so it is out of the way of blowers, manifolds, etc - just like a mopar - it's perfect :-)

So my big question is - can I use my olds dl with a large PTO - if it is one of those olds specific ones. I assume that if it is a std 1350 one, no issue. How do I tell? The length?

OK, so I think I found what I have - http://www.rexmar.com/page311.html / http://www.rexmar.com/page126.html but no Mopar one is listed.

I see I have the std duty small flange PTO and the heavy duty large flange CV drive shaft.

Any thoughts on who makes a large Mopar PTO adapter? I don't know how long the small driveline would hold up (or are they actually stout enough???)

edit - after rotating the cv around on the pto, I don't know if there is actually a way to make it fit. all 4 of the bolts are the same location (give or take) as the crankshaft bolts itself, and there doesn't appear to be a location where all 4 bolts have enough material to create a hole to thread into.

I will have to either get real creative (like studs, etc), or use the small CV.

My BB Mopar has a flywheel / adapter with a 4 bolt drive shaft adapter - if you measure one way the bolt centers are 2 inches across, the other way 2.4 inches

The olds driveshaft / cv joint I have is wider and doesn't fit.

My question is - is the 2x2.4 a common size, and does anyone have one they want to part with?

How nessasary are they I wonder??? You are always going to have some sediment, and with the water flowing it would seem like it would just keep flowing on out. Maybe I'm wrong though...

A lot of times that "problem" can be solved by whacking it with a screwdriver handle.

That tube is a vent for the floatbowls, you cannot plug it without the carb no longer functioning. What you can do though, is take a piece of 1/4 inch hose, put each end to the float bowl tube vents. Make sure you then cut a hole in the middle on the bottom so the vent tubes are still vented to the air, but any excess fuel bouncing out (or from a stuck float) will then go into the the carb rather than onto the outside of the carb and manifold.

If you aren't worried about that, then you can shorten the tubes, and many times you want it at an angle so the air filter / spark arrester doesn't block the tube.

I know Mopar's have exactly that, a drain at the lowest part in the middle of the block on each side for cleaning the crap out. It would seem logical that other mfg have it too - but I don't remeber the 455 having one. I'll have to check next time I'm in the garage.

SO should I plug the vacuum lines that come off the base?  I have breathers on both valve covers so no need to route lines to the carbs.  Also will a vacuum gague give an accurate reading off these lines or does it need to be off the manifold?  The only way to check one off the manifold is to put a vacuum line plug in the 1 hole that is 1/2 way up the tunnel ram runner on the rear of the manifold...

Sorry for all the questions I will have, but I am determined to be more than a plug and play jet boater.  I want to understand how my equipment works and how to properly tune it.

A vacum gauge anywhere on any of the base lines (except the ported vaccum which will pull 0 at idle) will reflect the entire manifold. For the longest time on one of my tunnel rams, I used an old fogger boss at the end of the runner far from the carb. When I changed it to under the carb, there was no difference.

But, shouldn't you regulate the amount of fuel from the fuel pump to the carbs so as to not pump more fuel through the carbs than needed and therefore have unused fuel dumped out through the exhaust?   I have read that most people seem to think big CFM numbers means more power and in reality it just means waisted gas.  Most people over size the carb, be it car or boat.

There is a needle and seat on the carbs - think about the toilet in your house. Same thing. You have 60-100 PSI going to the inlet of the toilet. As long as you dont overpressurize the house to 200 psi, water will not flow unless the bowl gets low (like when you flush).

A carb is the same thing. The fuel is pressurized to the float bowl, which acts as a mini gas tank. There is a needle and seat which shuts off the inlet flow of gas when the float bowls are full. As long as the fuel pressure doesn't push the needle open, it will work as planned. Above 9-10 PSI this can get pushed open. A mechanical pump and some of the lower flow electric pumps are preset to pump a maximum of 7 psi.

For the most part, changing PSI will not alter your jetting (there are some exceptions I'm not going to get into now). Jetting is where you are either being rich (dumping fuel out the exhaust), correct, or lean (melting a hole in your piston from the lack of fuel and the heat it creates).


There is more to carb CFM and requirements than just RPM. Intake manifold, head cfm, valve diameter, cam duration, all play a part. I have a 454 that needs 450 cfm max - while one of my 440's needs around 900 and the other 440 needs 1700. Factory 440's with a 5500 rpm shift point came from the factory with 1300 CFM. The same engine also came with a single 625 CFM 4bbl.

If you run a single plane you should run a smaller carb than if you have a true dual plane. This is because the engine only sees half of the carb. If you run a tunnel ram, the manifold makes the head flow better, so you need a larger carb.

If you are running a dual plane and want to experiment, try different open carb spacers (1/2, 1 and 2 inch). This will allow the engine to "see" a bigger carb, and make your intake look bigger. If you gain RPM, then you know you needed more CFM (or a different runner length).

I'm leaving some stuff out so this post isn't too long....but you guys get my drift..

I agree. It should be the same pressure at both carbs.


There isn't enough line there to cause a pressure drop from primary to secondary, and unless you max out the pump volume wise, there isn't going to be an issue.

1:1 Linkage on pri/sec - no acc pump linkage on secondaries - 50 cc pump - non cathedral bowls - definately a 660 center squirter carb in my opinion.

Hey Speedy, glad to see your gettin her back together. I wondered how you ever came out on that deal. Chances are if you would have got them to fix it ,you'd just have to redo it anyway to get it right. RE the whole chain deal I've always cris crossed the 2 chains under my tounge to hopefully "cradle" it so it can't fall to the pavement in case there ever is an mishap.


Yea, me too. Snapped them like a 30 year old twig.

So far 100% out of pocket.

On another note, the engine is coming along. Here is a pic mocked up with the TR - I have a single plane with an 850 dp on it too that i will also be trying out.

I dont remember right off hand what brand it is, I knew they would make noise quiet or noisy, so I got the quiet ones and I do have a gasket that I coat lightly with black rtv. It left a pretty good indent where the ends of the pins hit, so I am going to check into some kind of (teflon or hard rubber) to put into the ends after shaving them down. If that dont work I see how many hops I can get out of them skipping across the lake  ;D

Rubber - I wouldn't do that. The rubber will wear, and you will have that in your oil. HR56 asked a good question - if the gears are not solidly mounted to the shaft then you may want that press fit to keep them in place. If it is excessively tight, just cutting to clearance may be the way to go.

BTW pete jacksons are really loud - even the quiet version. An old trick is to put a nitrous direct port nozzle right at the gear (the old style with only one opening, not the mix style fogger) and plumb it for oil. This will drench the gear in oil and keep it silent.  On bb mopar's this is done easily through the fuel pump boss - you would have to figure out how to do it on an olds.

Those carbs could also be 450cfm 9776's with 50cc pumps.  But its hard to tell from the pic.  the 9776's are a stripped down inexpencive version of a 4160 style carb with mechanical secondaries but only one accelorator pump (not center squirters).  Designed for 2 x 4 applications only, decent for the price but the 660's definetly are the hot ticket.



I agree (I originally thought that too - I have a pair of those 450's on my tunnel ram), but that 50 cc pump made me think otherwise. The 450's (and the 390's for that matter) have such a small verturi bore that the secondary pump is unnessasary. If the pump was bumped to 50cc, it would probably only run right on a really small ci engine (that really over carbed)  - as you would have major bogging out of the hole. That was my thought anyway.

A pic of the other side would really help (the secondary linkage is a tail tell sign) - one without the scoop would be the nail in the coffin. They are probably one of these carbs:

390 mech secondary
450 mech secondary
660 center squirter

The 850 center squirter comes with cathedral bowls so we can eliminate that.

Technically no, but they are based on the DP carbs and have 1:1 ratio (pri and sec open together), and the acc pump shoots from the center rather than the side. These are race carbs typically, and designed for a 2x4 application. They are good carbs. Most people would still consider them double pumpers...

also, can anyone tell in the pic wether my holleys on there were double pumpers or not? they dont look like it although what do i know? lol...all i know is that they were 650cfm.

No vaccum secondary canister - BUT I dont see a secondary acc pump. The main pump is a 50cc unit, leading me to believe they are 660 center squirters (mech secondary).
