Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Basset T-valve fitting
« on: August 15, 2011, 08:36:17 PM »
Take the fitting out and get a pic up of the inside of it. It should be o-ringed and have a seat machined in for the ball to seal to. I agree, looks a little like an AN adaptor threaded in there, in which case, a new valve would be where I would go. Better prices on that kinda stuff from Tom at JBP or Jim at Cyclone than using CP Performance, just FYI.

Actually, pretty good, But Terry, system voltage should be in the 13.8 volt range when the boat is running and the alternator excites. You run a magneto and that is a different animal to be sure.

But I would agree the ignition switch could well be the problem, or wiring from it to the coil, or, as stated, the ballast itself is fubar. Simple jumper wire or someone holding a screwdriver across the resistor terminals while you start it should be able to tell you that much.

All said and done, do you need to charge the battery often playing around with all this? I've found a LOT of problems recently with "tested ok" batteries that were actually junk (my Bluetop Optima being one of 'em)........ :banghead:

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: My Blower motor...Blew!
« on: August 15, 2011, 08:04:23 PM »
I would say the intake valve bitch slapped the piston more than once!  ;D  Don't think I've ever seen one actually wear a groove in like that......especially as fresh as it all looks....... :screwy:

Obviously, you're going to be going with dished pistons and not those Domed Speed Pros. Check out Diamond or Probe, personally. Cams, a lot of ways to go. On a mild build I would look at the old Crane Commander 292 or the Comp 301 Extreme Marine hydraulic grinds on a BBC (They still make them, under a different tag number nowadays, but work well with smallish blowers I'm told) Hopefully some of the expensive hardware in that engine are salvageable.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Ray

Edit, you should be able to find pistons to get the compression down to a more reasonable 7.5-8.5:1 (Low maintenance pump gas engine) even with your small chamber heads. Dunno if they're open or closed chamber, what you have. 990's are everywhere and reasonable compared to the $2k for aluminum if you don't have the change for them, but depends on what blower intake you have as well going from Oval to rectangle ports........but 650 HP should be easily attainable and on the low end of what you actually end up with, depending on blower condition, etc ......... ;)

Projects / Re: Looking for advice.......
« on: August 13, 2011, 08:16:03 PM »
Welcome to SCJB  ;D

You'll probably like something in the 20'-21' range.  Hallett and Eliminator both make a popular hull that should be easy to find depending on how much you are willing to spend.

The 18'-19' boats are plentiful but after a season you will be looking for a larger boat anyway, so start off with something you will enjoy for several years.

As for engine you can't go wrong with a Chevy or Ford.  I'm not a big fan of the Olds due to the oiling problems.

As for the jet I would recommend staying with a Berkeley (or one of the Berk clones).  If you find something with a Jacuzzi, the WJ is a good choice but stay away from the YJ model.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of jet boats.  :screwy:

Awesome advice! Actually, I'd probably open up the brands to include Nordic, Sleekcraft and Biesemeyer in the 20-21' range if looking at older boats for far less coin than a newer Eliminator is gonna cost you. A few Nordics on here, the Sleekcraft 21' I have ridden in and worked on, awesome boat, and the Biesemeyer, well, I own one. Yes, it's a little wet, but I still own it!  :banghead:

yah like sabotage I love it  >:D

LOL I remember an engine I picked up there.......in the end looked like it was hit by a pack of hyena's and vultures before I got it home........don't remember making any money from it though......... ;D

what are the 460 heads ray and are youselling them????

They're Edelbrock RPMS, Gord, and maybe. Not entirely convinced they're what I want to use just yet. Chris says they look good on his motor......whatever THAT means....... :banghead:

Keith, we could mount a few water cannons on the Hondo and have a "mock war"........That'd be a lot of fun!!!

Ray

683
I could probably pick up also, but I would hate the fact that if you were short parts, ie the heads, I would have to blame the seller, and start a big brouh ha ha >:D

Yeah........... much as I hate to say it Mark, gonna hafta trust the Chebbie guys..............vultures.........lol. ......... O0

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Spare parts?
« on: August 13, 2011, 12:08:46 PM »
........Small roll of solid core elecrical wire (Can be used to wire something in an emergency or to tie something up, replace a clip, etc), spare coil, spare Ballast resistor (If so equipped, even then, wired mine into a guy's boat once with an MSD6 to get him back to the dock, so I always carry one), hose clamps, squeeze bottle with fuel in it, piece of heater hose, and extra bolts for the cable connections on the jet.

Sure I'm forgetting a few not taking inventory on my boats......

Ray

Is it complete with a BBC manifold and a couple underdrive pullies?  My compression is a little high in the current motor  ;)

If I can pick it up this weekend I can get it out to BR.

LOL! No, no manifold. Its a pretty raw 6-71 takeoff I'm gonna fire up the Kira on and try my own hand at gasoline conversion and building with. The heads are aluminum 460's so won't do you any good either. But I DO have a set of blower pistons that should fit your engine nicely!

Besides, you put a blower on that thing, the peg-legged driver is gonna kick BOTH our asses.......... ;D

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: bad ignition coil?
« on: August 13, 2011, 11:10:55 AM »
You also might want to disconnect the tach wire at the coil.  Might have a bad tach sending a constant ground back to the coil, or the tach wire might be grounded somewhere.

Oh yeah, voice of experience there!

Also, I didn't see mention of a wire from the starter to the coil directly. When in the start (Cranking) position, the coil sould have direct 12V. When you stop cranking, then everything runs through the resistor.... ;)

Ray

687
Anybody coming through or near Fontana on the way to BR? I got a blower and set of heads in Chris's garage (Filterbiz) That if I don't get out of there soon, I think they're going to make an appearance on his truck...... :banghead:

Ray

688
If you're coming anyway, just bring the 888 with you, wtf?

You can ride with anyone to what we are doing, AND give the kids a ride in a race boat!

I just put together a brand new all aluminum 621 cubic inch engine, with a brand new Milodon gear drive and ATI balancer.  The fixed pointer in the Milodon cover was 6 1/2 degrees retarded.  That one really surprised me with the high dollar parts,, but I went back and checked it several times to make sure.

It's reasons like this I have my own initial timing method on BBF's and a Silver Sharpie marker.  I'm sure I can come up with one for BBC's too, if I ever really start really messing with them, but Barry's probably already got a short, sweet, easily field useable one to address stuff like this on bowties.

Never trust a timing mark, tab, pointer or the marks on a balancer until you PROVE they are right, is all I can add to this lesson. (Same with timing sets gang)  ;)

Skip, get the momo together, we got river cruising coming up in 10 days........

Been so busy with other stuff, and finances aren't what they need to be so sad to say, no, not much has been done on the poor thing. I went through the pumps here a few weeks ago, they are indeed rebuilt and ready to go, I had dropped off a few 460 Blocks to the machine shop and they informed those two were ready go go whenever I decided what I was doing for cranks, stroker, etc. The heads I've left here, I think I want to go aluminum in some form on these. Stringers are cut, trimed and ready for install.

My attention gets diverted into something else pretty easily. I'm like a crow, all you gotta do is wave something shiney or topless at me and I'm all over it..... :banghead:

Part of it has been my attention to rear driving the blower on this 10-71 deal Harry found me, having it disassembled and put together backwards, reclearanced and timed, and I think we got the logistics of all that worked out (No thanks whatsoever to Mooneyham who made the friggin thing despite Matt and Randy's best efforts, BIG thanks to Kimberly Gear in PHX who are more than happy to make any billet blower pulley I could possibly imagine and Sun Devil Superchargers, who I don't think fully understand WHY i wanted this done on a new blower....... ;)  )  I want to see this work in something I'm not going to kill myself in and probably do the same thing twin style with 6-71's and possibly set-back the pumps. Tom and Josh are excited to do the rear plates with integral idler pulley slot (We're going to use rail kits on this).

So the plan is there, once the floor is all in and we start building the interior, etc, I can get a little more excited.

Getting closer      So was wondering what everryone is doing about food ??? ???

Catfish Cantina had large stacks and huge cups, and the food was pretty good too........ ;D

But I'd be down for a BBQ deal. I didn't even pay attention if the grilles were still even there.....But I'd volunteer Chili again, unless Keith and Michelle are going to make it, theirs is awesome, and doesn't cause colon concerns the next day, in which case I'll whip up some Dead Dick's bean dip instead....or maybe both anyway for giggles.....

X2, get some pics up. The intake is the standard rounded keel Berk intake, worth something to anyone doing a jacuzzi/panther conversion, and the 12JC you should get a few bucks for anyway (worth around $200 as a core). Maybe some other stuff we're looking for in that thing.

If this boat is a tunnel hull or something I might hafta kill myself...... :banghead:

Well its in! Easy money. Incase anyone was curious. Its a direct swap from a sbo to a bbo. I was a little nervous...  it took me 4 hours to get the bilge cleaned up and all the oil soaked carpet out of there as well as the bilge painted. But she's in

Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk

Good work Daniel! I told Harry it would work fine.

More FYI. Parts interchangeability, external dimensions are almost ALWAYS universal on BOP engines. Meaning 350 Buicks are the same as 400 and 455 Buicks, same with Pontiac and Olds. A 326 Pontiac head will fit a 455 block. There REALLY is no Big Block/Small Block deal as dramatic as with Chevrolet.  ;)

Another FYI for Pontiac fans, the Olds rear motor plates also fit on Buick and Pontiac engines. And older Cadillac engines as well (Be kinda cool, and actually thought of a jet boat with a 500 or 525 Caddy motor in it.... :D )

See ya at BR!

Or bad starter, and the ground cable is smaller gauge than the positive cable.   If the starter is bad and drawing huge amounts of current, the heat will show up in the weakest cable/connection.

Could be. Whatever it is, get it fixed like pronto! Boats make good kindling......... :banghead:
