Just don't use Vertglass or other polymer gel coat treatments. Might be OK if you're trying to spruce up to sell, but then the buyer is going to be pissed, because it just won't last. Ask me how I know.

Oooo.....too bad. I heard Pine Flat was down to about 25%, and when it's 100* at PF, it'll be in the low 80s at Shaver. Have a good time, but I'm still going up to Shaver for the week--anyone else want to get away for a couple days?

Like propless said, I would suggest you consider Shaver Lake--similar temps, scenery, fresh air to Bass Lake, but better camping and no launch fees. During the week, there are normally very few boats other than the fishermen. I am planning to spend next week up there working on my Sanger flat bottom project. Yea, Belmont Boats was know for its flat bottoms in the 60s. They were a custom manufacturer that built quality boats. I got to know the owner in 1978/79, but haven't been by the old shop (located just west of HWY 99 on Belmont--across from the cemetary) in many years. From what I remember, their jet boats were solid and fairly heavy with a long "crowned" deck, but with straight bottoms and a good ride. I used to see them regularly around the Fresno area, but very seldom see any--except for a couple major projects listed for sale in the past year or two. I have seen several pretty nice flat bottoms recently.

If you want, I'll check to see if there is anyone left at the shop, so give me a call--might save you a trip.

Holy Crack Batman.     Looks like you may need to pull the old wood out and replace with new and then fix the crack in the glass.  Then coat the new wood with a layer of glass cloth and resin.

If the crack extends up from the steering wheel to the deck, you'll have to redo it as stated, but it is a tough job. If the crack is just what is shown under the steering wheel, I would be very tempted to drill and bolt those 2 plates together, especially if you can get a decent bite on good wood in between the plates.

Hey, I lost a 1975 19' Kona Makai bubble deck/455 Olds/Je pump in Atscadero a few years back--probably the ugliest boat I've ever seen. Nice lines, but ugly gel colors (wood grain deck, silver and red metal flake) and condition (about 80 grit). I sort of sold/financed/gave it as a project to a friend, and didn't hear from him for about 4 years. The story of my life--in fact, I just found the pink slips in an old file today.

There you go, propless--you could be back in the water by next weekend.

I used 2 cherry pickers to, by myself, jack an 18' jetboat (no motor or interior, and drained tanks) off the trailer, turned it over and set it down on a dolly. Where in CA are you located?

Kind of hard to get oriented with your pictures, but it looks very similar to the crack/repair we did on my son's Sanger cruiser. Note in the first picture, someone previously tried to "bondo" the crack (gray stuff)--needless to say, it still leaked.


Ground out the bad glass--had to get rid of most of the strake before rebuilding it with new glass



Sanding/smoothing fiberglass work



Brushed on white gel coat



Finish sanding the gel.



After finishing the bottom, we turned it back over, cut out the poorly repaired floor, removed soggy foam, laid several layers of glass/mat to back up the bottom repair, and glassed in a center stringer and 2 additional supports for the new floor. Seems to me that it took a couple of weekends to complete the job. Have 2 seasons on the boat and haven't had any more problems.

$40K, holy crap! by the time you buy a trailer and put in a Bravo I with a 454 or a 502 you're gonna be in a $55K +/- boat , guess they don't want to have to build too many of them..

Yea, I hear you. On one hand, I'm just a cheap skate who has never paid more than about $6K for a turn key boat--about the same as some of the preformance boat guys spend on their stereos--and it sure sounds like alot of money to me. On the other hand, Sanger was getting nearly that for some of their wake board boats a year or two ago and I still hear of socal guys spending $50K+ for some of those newer rides. Actually, I think they are bringing it back because the ski boat market is in the tank and they are hoping to tap back into that classic boat crowd to keep their doors open. Sure makes me think about putting my Sanger v-drive mini up for sale. Probably would sell it for half the replacement cost.
