Oldsmobile's are power monsters. Nobody really likes them cause they're not the cheapest to bring the power out of. I have an 458 (Olds), built with Diamond pistons, Eagle rods, billet steel mains studded with a 5cap halo, studded & majorly worked ProComp heads, Victor intake, Holley  dominator, Lunati  roller hydraulic 322/601 with 112 lobe sep. All balanced, SFI'd, and ready to rock. Calculated, not SWAG'd, torque@ 588 HP approximately 600'ish.

To counter heat involved issues, run a fuel system/inline cool can. Dry ice if you're froggy or big block of regular ice and water. Drop inlet fuel temp up to  30-40 degrees before delivery.

Heat in the engine bay is normal, counter it effectively and wisely.

What's your cam profile and was it degreed in? Compression? How many hours on the timing chain? Oldsmobile's have a heavy valve train to roll over, stretch in the chain can result in your symptom also, due to cam  retard.

I used GM Delphi-Weatherpac connectors, from 1-6 pins all crimped&soldered with rubber seals. Got a kit on EBay for like 85.00, comes with male and female pins in 2 gauges of wire. Came with pin removal tool and case for all.

The motor would like it. No mass in the exhaust stream.

If you're runnin' an oil cooler, I'd say Tee it in on the return line. That way you know the lowest temp you will run, or on the outbound line to monitor the highest temp.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Blower vs nitrous
« on: January 03, 2015, 07:00:25 AM »
Just for fits & shiggles, remember on a bad weather day, the blower makes its own atmosphere, nitrous can't.  You've got a great setup as is, stud the top, new heads, give yourself a lil' more boost, and I think you'll be happier.

In addition, that goofy welded on "scoop" protruded 1" below the keel.  More apt to dig for gold with I think.

Jet Pumps / The Under-abundance of Intelligence

Started on the pump intake grate replacement, expecting some level of intelligence above breathing & eating.  But Nay! Sayeth the moron who's favorite line was,"..yup, done it ma-sef".....from who'm I purchased my vessel.

I removed his "modified" rock grate in order to install my SS loader into the intake.  This is what I took out and am installing.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Whos headers are these, I want a set
« on: September 13, 2014, 09:55:41 AM »
Those headers do make an audible difference in the exhaust note, a little higher and tinnier; however, the purpose is to bring in a little more back pressure to get more low end torque.  Sprint boats use them fairly often.

If that's Andy Miller from Olds Perf Parts, I got plenty of parts for my BBO from him.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Rebuild kits
« on: September 01, 2014, 05:33:13 PM »
On EBay, there's a shop selling a set of Eagle H-beam 6.735"steel rods for BBO for under or around $100.00.  I run them in  468" that's pushing around 575hp (BBO).
I built my own only reusing the "N" crank and block. They're reliable, and powerful.  Look for a book by Bill Travato (BTR Performance), Dick Miller Racing, Mondello, Rocket Racing.

Interior / Re: Recommendation on gauges please.....
« on: August 15, 2014, 04:20:06 AM »
I think I'll go with the Phantom all gauges.  I can get all gauges in the size I want. When I have everything done, and she's in the water, her name will be "The Ferryman", with an airbrushed rather mythical and evil looking guy on the bow. The motor is done and ready to go in, work on the stringers is in effect now.

I've got an Edelbrock Torker and a Holley marine 850 spread bore double pumper w/ manual choke I'm looking to unload. The carb will need to be rebuilt but a kit and 6 pack are cheap. Let me know. I switched to a Victor & marine dominator w/ a little giggle juice.

Kelly,

I also would suggest you pull your oil cooler water lines off and inspect the inlet and flow tubes to make sure they aren't all packed full of weeds/debris, this could also cause your issue.

I've had to make some changes to my set up that will cause another delay.  I've elected to go with KE Performance fully jacketed headers at a cost of around 3K.  The wife wants me to keep it all under the hood so she can climb her ass in and out over the aft end, I conceded. :banghead:  Then there's the bathroom remodel (forced)-had a pipe blow out this cold winter and fucked everything that's costing me close to 10K.  And then there's my father- a retired SSBN commander, retired Naval Electronics VLF COmmunications engineer, retired private pilot, retired pro mod hydro racer........just diagnosed with agressive colon cancer.  I have to take some time off from everything to try and help get his affairs in order and help my step mother  :(.

Here's how the motor sits right now:

I run a 75 Carlson CV21 w/ a 468 @ about 580HP.  Get rid of the water pump, the JE pump on your ride provides (should) enough water flow with sufficient pressure to cool your engine.  Ditch the T-stat or drop it to a 160F with 3 1/16" holes drilled in it.  Get a pressure gauge on your set up, you've got to know what kind of flow/psi your running in the water. The pressure blow off valve works well, but you've got to set it with a gauge.  A gate valve set at 1-3/4 turns should be sufficient. I know the lakes your on, I grew up and ran on Buggs Island & Gaston, good deep water.

I surmise the reason it runs adequately with the hose is the flow rate from your hose is making up for what the water pump can't do---it's shot.  I might also check the clearance on your impellar to the housing, it might be too much.  The previous owner may have done a quickie rebuild, i.e.- bearings, gland seals, maybe bowl bushings, and a gasket, depending on how froggy he felt.

Good luck!

I would recommend looking at this blog/forum   http://realoldspower.prophpbb.com/

These guys are hardcore oldsmobile as am I, and you can gain a lot of useful information that won't cost much on how to modify/maintain your BBO.

This is mine going in my '75 Glastron Carlson CV21

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Carb size
« on: April 25, 2014, 10:01:49 AM »
Couple of things here, (1) what's your cam profile, (2) are the carbs new, old, rebuilt, etc, (3) tuning a dual quad setup is tricky at best, (4) how many hours on the engine and is it freshly tuned up, i.e.- cap, rotor, wires etc.  You'll need a balance chamber to link between the two carbs to ensure they're both drawing equally.  So you know what the jetting is on the carbs?

Interior / Recommendation on gauges please.....
« on: April 12, 2014, 11:13:50 AM »
Gentlemen,

I am at a difficult juncture in my build and request your input.  The gauge set I like for my build (Autometer Phantom II) are not marinized per Autometer, yet the Autometer marine ProComp are available and the only ones they offer.  Livorsi has a comparable set of gauges, but look too much like the ProCOmp.

My question to all is this,  how many of you are using dedicated marine gauges vs. street gauges (non-marine) and for those of you who do not use marine gauges, have you suffered any failures with your system (gauge pack)?  If I'm spending all this dough, approx. to date $17K in parts and such, should I make it look good and the way I want it, or keep the system mainstreeam? :banghead:

Thanks,

Chris
