Hi all,

Finally picked up my first float a couple of weeks ago! Went with the 1982 Rogers TR that Joe Podowski (JP Marine) was offering. His personal rig. Bought the boat with a n/a BBC that he had at the shop instead of the TT power plant. ( see:  For sale: Twin Turbo Rogers Bonneville Original and Pristine)
Joe is a pretty good guy. I came up with a punch list of stuff I wanted for the re-power, including a couple of minor repairs & he took care of all the items I requested without adding to the purchase price…. Overall I'm pretty stoked with what I ended up with. Doing some tinkering of my own on the BBC.  If all goes well, we'll be getting it wet sometime in April….

Thank's to all the great folks here at SCJB for the support & suggestions that have been offered. It's all truly much appreciated

He's asking 10K essentially w/o power (BBF in pieces).  Spoke to the owner a few weeks ago & didn't seem like he would take less than that, but , who knows... Kinda wish it was closer....


That your Rogers in your avatar?  The color scheme on that is super groovy.  Any chance you might want to sell that thing?  Been looking for a nice origin condition Bonnville for a while now & have not found one that is super nice (that's for sale).
I can put 12K on the table....

Yeah, It seemed like a pretty sweet boat. Traded a couple of e-mails with the owner & se sent a couple of pic's (of the transom & pump) that weren't in the CL ad. Looked real clean & was definitely garaged & covered.
The color scheme didn't do too much of me & being that is was an 18' & not a TR, the price seemed a bit too high.
Whoever ended up with it go a real nice float.

The owner texted me a bunch of pics last night, including pics of the boat at the shops that did the gelcoat repairs & pump work, + descriptions of the work done.  It all looks pretty legit.
Even though the hull & rigging look pretty complete, and in good condition, it is a project.  The engine being torn down is an issue.  Without confirmation that all the parts he bought for the internals are all there & correct, it's a bit of a question mark.
I would think that he would sell the boat without the engine but it seems like he would looking for a bit too high of a price to make it a good deal. I mean, the 460 isn't worth that much on it's own in it's current state, so essentially he's selling the boat without power.....

You are talking about the 1976 Rogers for sale in Houston?
No didn't buy. I am talking with the owner, getting some background on the current condition of  His Rogers TR, & the work he has had done to it since he purchased it in 2014.
Seems like he started with a real nice boat. It had some cracks in the gel (on the freeboard around where the gas tanks are) that he had repaired correctly, + got the hull all cut & buffed. Professional work done on the pump.
cut out the gas tanks & reset them to be more removable. Sounds like he went through just about everything else & repaired or replaced. Guages, cables, carpet, etc.
The 460 is in pieces, though.  Apparently some of the machine work on the block & heads has done, parts for the internals purchased, it that sounds like as far as he is going down that road.
I am trying to figure out, whether what he might want for the hull/pump, the cost of getting the 460 together, a trip out to Houston to inspect it, either shipping or driving it back 1,500 or so miles is going to somehow fit in my budget.
It looks, as of this moment, that that boat might be out of my reach financially, but, ya never know….


BTW. What was your cousin's take on the boat?

Saw that boat in person a few weeks ago. It's at JP Marine in Lakeside. Real nice original condition hull & interior. Not 'pristine' as the copy states, but probably close to as good as it gets.
FYI: He wants 10K without power. A bit over my budget, but might work for someone who has a BBC sitting around…. ;)

Not sure how you're going to use the boat. From the cockpit stand point. That foot difference in overall length is all in the back seat.
That being said, if you plan using the back seat, I'd stick to a 19' TR. 

Unless you go to an 18' Super Cyclone (flat deck) you'll get the back seat back.
The 18' Super Cyclone and 18' Bonneville share the same bottom.
When Roger made the bubble deck it took 6" or 8" out of the cockpit.

Thanks for the info. Esp. the hull info. Did not know the Super Cyclone & 18' bubble shared the same hull..
The 19' TR would be my first choice, a bit harder to come by, though.
Going to use as a family boat, although a pretty small family, just me & the wife, a couple friends once & a while. Back seat is important, but don't need a ton of room.

Hey all,
Still looking.
Kinda narrowed down my criteria:
Roger Bonneville 18' or 19' TR.  Original gel, interior, running gear in excellent condition.  BBC or BBF.  Berkeley. Turnkey boat.
I now have a budget of 10K. Got the cash & ready to deal. Could go a bit higher for the right boat…
Anyone out there have something that fits the bill?

Is that a possibility? Valve float at 4,200- 4,400 rpm? Worn valve springs or lifters? I mean, if you're floating, that's it for rpm's. 4400 seems a little low for that to happen though,unless there are some worn or damaged parts?

Try putting a larger .150" needle & seat, on at least the secondary bowl. Also , couldn't hurt to put a high flow power valve in the primary MB. AED has a '4 door' power valve that seems to work pretty good.
Extensions on the secondary jets couldn't hurt either.  Just some things that help make the carb as efficient as possible…..

A couple of suggestions:


The surging & popping at WOT 'sounds' like a lean condition.
Seems like you are getting timing advance, 24 deg. all in sounds o.k., so I would just concentrate on the fuel system.
Have you checked the spark plug coloring yet?  It's a good indicator of, among other things, if you are running lean or rich.
The best readings are obtained from new plugs . Change them out, run it through the entire rpm range, & see what you get initially. It'll help with your diagnosis.
Make sure the plug wires are good. Older wires that have dried out or cracked insulation can potentially fail under higher rpm with a load.
Have you pulled the secondary bowl to see if there is any junk in there? Also check the secondary throttle blades to see if they are opening all the way, & that all your linkage is moving freely.
The power valve is already doing it's job at WOT since you are probably pulling 1" or less of vacuum at that point. You should be good with a 6.5 or 4.5……..
At any rate, it wouldn't hurt to pull the carb & do a rebuild.  You could do that yourself. Holley rebuild kits are pretty inexpensive……

I kind of knew (thanks to folks here at SCJB) that the 15k he was asking was over the top. I offered 9K to see if he would come off the mountain, + I have that in cash.
The way I see it, especially with older stuff, everything is negotiable.  If he would have said no to 9, I wouldn't have gone to see the boat at all.
I am just figuring out what boats are worth, and I'm looking for a boat to keep.  If it was something that I totally was in love with, I would pay over the going rate……….

Hey guys & gals,


Continuing on the boat hunt.  Went to see a 1978 19' Hallett bubble deck today. (see on site pics)


Original Owner. Bought late in '77, picked boat up in 78', HN ends with 78-1. Has been garaged all it's life except for last couple months, been outside under a towing cover + waterproof cover.
Rebuilt BBF, & pump., both done by Blair Speed Shop about a 1-1/2 years ago. 10 hrs on both motor & pump since rebuild. Imco fuel tanks. Place diverter.
Hull & stringers solid. Gelcoat in relay good shape. Minor chips on bottom edge of dash & a few marks under the keel but nothing major. Could use a cut & buff or at least a polish.
Interior redone. Carpet good. Upholstery in good shape. Done with period correct tuck n' roll.
Steering cable a little stiff, might need replacing. All other cables good.
Overall seems like a pretty clean, well cared for boat.


I was wondering if it would be possible to get some feedback, opinions, suggestions  from you all?
Thoughts???

**Owner has advertised for 15K on CL.
   Called him a couple weeks ago, offered him 9K, he got back to me last week & said he would take the 9. 
   After seeing the boat, it seems to me 9K was still way too high. Offered him 7,000 on the spot & he declined……
   How off am I on the $$ ?

I'd say Holley all the way.  Edelbrock carbs are really only good for mild street use, not much more than that.
In my opinion, the best option is to get a custom carb built to your engine specs. Most of the custom carb builders use Holley main bodies anyhow. I have a Pro Systems carb on my SBF. Didn't cost much more than a Holley HP.
Once I got it dialed in, the thing works amazing…. :)
