I can't help you w/ your problem, but this forum is full of helpful people that can probably give you some good ideas as to what's goin on. Sounds to me like whoever told you about the cracked piston just threw out a Hail Mary right there. If you had a cracked piston, that thing would run like crap all the time. The cracked header at #1 is of concern. I wonder if that cylinder got way too hot from detonation or something.

Trailers / Re: Trailer bunks: Choosing correct lumber

Replaced all 4 bunks today with a friend. Lifted the boat w/ a floor jack and did one side at a time. Bought the lumber yesterday morning @ the local big box store along with a gallon of Thompsons, 5/16" lag bolts and a pound of galvanized roofing nails. I decided to buy the carpet from Rex Marine since the rolls come pretty much pre-cut and this stuff is made especially for bunks. It was a pretty easy and stright forward job. The old bunks were crap! The stuff they were wrapped in was almost like the stuff you'd see on a pool table. Thanks for the advice ka0tyk!

Today I gave the carb a thorough once over and everything looks good. I had one of my techs here at work check to see if the squirters were working at the proper time and he said that it looked normal. When I changed the power valve, I gave the local carb shop my vacuum readings at idle and 2500 and according to him he gave me the correct power valve. I posted this problem on another forum and a couple of members mentioned that I'm probably having issues due to my current cam/intake combo. When I first bought the boat, I had a sneaking suspicion that the intake was probably gonna be an overkill. I'm fairly confident that I have the right advance spring/stop bushing combination in the dizzy so I'll leave that alone at this time. Either today or tomorrow I'll increase the primary jet size by one and I may switch out the #65 pv to a #55 again. At this point, I probably shouldn't increase the base timing since my total advance is already on the high side of the spectrum.

what kind of relay do I use and any ideas where to pick one up at? and what is the purpose of the relay? Just curious on what it does

When you wire up a fuel pump thru a relay what you are doing is running the pump on it's own dedicated circuit. It's never a good idea to run something like a fuel pump on the same circuit as something else because you run the risk of overloading that circuit. I imagine that is what's goin on with you boat. You're probably overheating the ignition switch in your boat and that's why the boat runs for a few minutes after things cool down. Summit racing and Jegs carry electric fuel pump relay kits. I'm sure that ka0tyk has his wired up thru a relay and he's really good at posting diagrams and stuff. If you're nice to him, I'm sure he'd be glad to help :)

Sounds like wrong pv to me....anything new(beside the ignition system)...when did it start??

I never really ran the boat w/ the setup it had when I bought it. When I bought the boat it had a Demon carb and Edelbrock mech fuel pump that were full of water. I switched to the Holley and I installed a new fuel pump. The intake is the same and I believe it's a Victor Jr. Besides that, all the other parts I replaced are just new parts to replace the old. Spark plugs are R44T which is what I pulled out of it. After I ran the boat a few hours with the 74/80 jets and 55 power valve the plugs were white. On this trip the engine stumbled bad from the fuel starvation. Things get better as I increase jet size. Now I'm at 77/81 and although things are better my problem is still not fixed. Just seems odd to me that this motor seems to like to be at 14 degrees base and still seems to be a little lean w/ the current jets.

not that its the plugs, but what kind of plugs do you use?

i had my timing locked at 36* and carb primaries at 78 and secondaries at 82 on my 750dp. i used autolite 26's and never had an issue. dizzy's will create problems. try another dizzy and see if thats your problem. i had a burnt cap/rotor once, but it still ran good and had the rpm's are 5600.

whats been change to your engine?

I can try 78/82 jets as opposed to the 77/81 that I have now but our motors might be set up completely different. My friends Hallett has a bbc and a way hotter cam than me and his motor likes 74/80 in his 750DP It just seems kinda odd that my engine is requiring so much more fuel when I have a smaller cam. I have a pretty agressive intake and my choke horn is shaved off. Could it  be that the combination of those two things is causing the motor to be lean since it's sucking in quite a bit of air?

Exactly what I was thinking. Timing sounds a bit "off" to me. I think it might be time to really look into whats going on in your dizzy. Not saying just replace it, but I'd dig a little deeper into it and see if theres an appparent problem there. Points diz or electronic?

Ray

Electronic ignition w/ an external coil. When I first got the boat, the distributor was rusted inside pretty bad. I tore it down and replaced all the guts.   It has a new p/u coil, cap, rotor, advance stop bushing and springs. When I installed the new p/u coil I followed MSD's directions to a "T" and I know for sure that the gap is set correctly. I have the advance set up to where it kicks in pretty early. If I remember correctly, I installed the softest spring that were in the kit.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Strange stumble with BBC

So my bbc has a strange stumble that I'm having issues diagnosing. Base timing is set at 14 and total advance is 35 The stumble is present when I first take off and again just as the secondaries open. The carb is a Holley 750 and I first started out with 74/80 jets and a #55 power valve. Now I'm at 77/81 jets and a #65 power valve. The problem seems to be there but it"s only abut 75% better. I pulled some plus today and it looks like the motor might be running a bit on the lean side. The plug color is like a light gray and nowhere near the white when I first started running the boat. The ignition system is all new and fuel pressure is within specs. Any ideas? I was thinking of maybe going down to a #55 power valve and increasing the primary jets by one. Also, the timing at 14 has me kinda nervous since factory spec calls for a base of 10 If I bring down from 14 to 12 my total advance ends up at 33 which is h=good but then the stumble off idle is worse.

i think they make the 6al still, they just made it low profile and kinda lame looking

Yup that's it. My '70 el camino has an MSD HEI dizzy on it and I finally decided to install a 6AL box just as the digital unit came out. I still need to research exactly what the differences are between the old version and the new. I can tell you though, that looks aren't the only things they changed. I may even end up looking for someone who has a good used 6AL or an NOS unit.

85
I have a 6AL w/ a 6k chip in it. I have both an MSD coil and distributor however, I'm not running HEI at the moment. E-mail the MSD tech dept. and they'll tell you what you need in order to run HEI and a 6AL. On a side note: MSD no longer makes the 6AL, it's now called Digital6. Supposedly it's a better unit.

Trailers / Trailer bunks: Choosing correct lumber
« on: July 05, 2011, 12:37:05 PM »
Need to replace my bunks like yesterday and I know nothing about this subject. One friend says that I need pressure treated lumber and another friend says no to the pressure treated but he can't remember the reason why. Also, I looked at 2x4's but they look to be thicker than what I currently have. Is it possible that my trailer bunks are 1x4's?
Thanks in advance

I have two on my boat. The main is an automatic 750gph pump that if needed I can control via a standard push/pull switch on the dash. The back-up is a manually operated 500 gph unit that is also controlled via a standard push/pull switch on the dash. The automatic has power running to it at all times as long as the battery is connected. I have two 3/4" water dumps located at the rear of the boat. As HaulsBalls stated, a 500gph unit w/ a 3/4'' hose moves plenty of water.

SoCal Lakes / Re: Holiday wknds. and SoCal lakes
« on: June 30, 2011, 12:57:30 PM »
Of the lakes mentioned the only one I have any experience with is Elsie.  If you stay at the campground/motel the night before, it would be easier to get to the ramp at dawn.  The weather is warm and so is the water, so why not make the most of the day?  There will only be a handful of wake boats there before 6 and the ramp is huge.  The boat traffic won't really pick up until around 7 but by 8 all the smooth water will be gone.  By 10am it will be pretty busy at the ramp but there is a lot of parking.
Most weekends Sunday is always busier than Sat. but I don't know when/if they are doing fireworks or anything else at the stadium.  That could change things.  They used to launch the fireworks from a barge and so everywhere was a good seat at night.  If it was me I would keep the boat at home for another weekend.

That's the plan Stan  :)

How do I find out what kind of heads are on my BBC. There is a casting # on them. Does that have any meaning? I'm currently running the Delco R44T spark plugs and the motor seems to run fine. Of course, if I can get it to run better with longer plugs then I'd be game for swapping them out   ;)

stay home and keep your wife out of the boat till the baby comes....jmho

No can do my friend, she enjoys boating way too much. I wouldn't be surprised if she wanted to go boating the day before going into labor. LOL

SoCal Lakes / Holiday wknds. and SoCal lakes

Can anyone tell me how busy the SoCal lakes get over holiday weekends? My wife and I are debating on whether we should hit up Castaic, Piru or maybe Elsinore this Sat and Sunday. My wifes almost 5 months pregnant and she doesn't feel comfortable about launching the boat if the ramp is super busy.

get a pressure regulator WATTS plumbing makes one part number X65B. you can set it at 20psi.
Use it instead of a gate valve. I have one on my boat with water jacketed lighting headers and they stay nice and cool.
Plus you wont have to worry about too much water pressure entering the engine block.
Best ninety dollars ever spent.

Maybe you can post a pic of that regulator installed.....?

94
Going to do the hot water dump and cold water to risers route... but also have to take risers and pipes to be cut and rewelded to create the chamber that was accidently chopped off the first time.

I usually move quick but my gma died yesterday and I've been focusing my time with my family lately.  Sorrry!

Very sorry to hear about your loss.  :(

95
So what was the final outcome of your little project. Did you go by your diagram or did you end up installing a tstat? Inquiring minds wanna know :)

96
Very informative. I've always been a 455 fan although I've never owned one. I printed out the article in case I ever got a boat w/ one of these engines. Glad to see that theres a light at the end of the tunnel for 455 owners! Thanks for the post.

Why do you think that is?

Not knocking the Royal Purple, but they have better marketing than oil....My buddy uses it and swears to it, but I am not convinced. ;)

GT

Spent a few minutes researching and found 2 sites that state that RP's viscosity index rating is 129 *** note to self*** Research VI ratings tomorrow  ;)

98
Skip,

I did some hunting around and I found out that the VR1 50 wt. VI is only 105, whereas the Amsoil Racing 50 wt checked in at 140....The higher the number the better at retaining it's actual viscosity at different temps, thought it was interesting...funny thing about the blends too, they tend to drop off at high temps but  interestingly enough, Castrol Syntec for example does not publish the VI, or at least make it easy to find... :-\ .....Something to hide????

GT

What do you think of Royal Purple? Before I switched, the engine would cruise at 45-50 psi when hot and then drop down to 25-30 psi at idle. This was with a conventional Chevron Supreme 10w40 we sell at the shop. After I switched to Royal Purple my bbc now cruises at 50-55 psi hot and drops down to around 40 at idle. I checked RP's site and found no info on the VI rating.

Boat Showcase / Re: Lexan splash guard
« on: June 14, 2011, 12:07:50 PM »
Without sounding rude, can I ask what the purpose of the splash guard is? Is it to keep water from coming over the transom when letting off the gas or something? I don't know on your boat, but if I had that thing installed on my Rogers I wouldn't be able to get to the water filter, msd box or diverter pump which are all located on the inside of the transom.
