That thing mounted on your main bearings might be a crank scraper.

Actually, good point. Haven't seen one of those used in a LONG time..........

But post some pics. Teh one in the pan is all you need.

I have a 454 with a milodon pan on it with a windage tray built into it. When I took my motor apart to rebuild it I noticed it had another windage tray mounted off the bearing caps. Is it normal to run 2 or the one built into the pan is all you need?

Ummmm........NO!

The No Wake Zone / Re: Understanding English Can Be Difficult.....
« on: July 07, 2011, 10:01:20 PM »

No English dictionary has been able to explain the difference between the two words COMPLETE and FINISHED, in a way that's easy to understand.
Some people say there is no difference between COMPLETE & FINISHED.

I beg to differ because, there is:

When you marry the right woman, you are "COMPLETE."

And when you marry the wrong one, you are "FINISHED!"

And when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are ...

"COMPLETELY FINISHED" !!!

Very well said!

In addition though, in searching for the "complete" woman, you can just give up and be "finished" with that.

Then she will always say she was "finished" looking anyway and just married the first "complete" ass she found.

At the same time, you can have a "complete" love life but she needs to be "finished" by someone else,,,,or vice-versa......

Lots of ways to decipher these things.......Like when she says "you just don't do it for me anymore" and you say, "yeah, I know, that's why I'm doing your sister"...........

Well I tried to upload a few pics but it said it took to long or file was to big..Ill try and get it figured out!

Best bet is to open a Photobucket or similar account, upload there, then just directly cut/copy/paste the IMG link here.

I have yet to have any luck downsizing pics acceptable to directly upload on these sites.......not singling out this one, it's all of them.

You have a good boat there! Beerjet knows far more about them than I do.

does anyone have any headers for a ford 390.. i keep looking and i cant find anything....

Should be the same as the 428 no? Those should be a plenty, although most are probably v-drive headers, they should work.

Pull the valve covers and look for bent pushrods/broken rockers. Compression and leakdown test would certainly be in order before you run it again. Should give you a better idea about what happened and whats going on in there.

Black smoke......flame out the exhaust....cracked header.......bent exhaust valves possibly?

If all that checks out, I'd be thinking ignition timing/Dizzy problems.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Strange stumble with BBC
« on: July 06, 2011, 07:04:08 PM »
So my bbc has a strange stumble that I'm having issues diagnosing. Base timing is set at 14 and total advance is 35 The stumble is present when I first take off and again just as the secondaries open. The carb is a Holley 750 and I first started out with 74/80 jets and a #55 power valve. Now I'm at 77/81 jets and a #65 power valve. The problem seems to be there but it"s only abut 75% better. I pulled some plus today and it looks like the motor might be running a bit on the lean side. The plug color is like a light gray and nowhere near the white when I first started running the boat. The ignition system is all new and fuel pressure is within specs. Any ideas? I was thinking of maybe going down to a #55 power valve and increasing the primary jets by one. Also, the timing at 14 has me kinda nervous since factory spec calls for a base of 10 If I bring down from 14 to 12 my total advance ends up at 33 which is h=good but then the stumble off idle is worse.

Exactly what I was thinking. Timing sounds a bit "off" to me. I think it might be time to really look into whats going on in your dizzy. Not saying just replace it, but I'd dig a little deeper into it and see if theres an appparent problem there. Points diz or electronic?

How about the youngest (20) person to win a world championship?  And then he went on to win it 5 more CONSECUTIVE times.  Oh yeah, in the most physically demanding sport in the world.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you .  .  .   Joel Robert

Since you went MX there, Now that I think about it, What about Bob Hannah, his rivalsl Marty Smith and Broc Glover?  Were it not for Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmicheal, those guys records would still stand after 30 years!

I don't think heats the problem. POssibly a ground? or the ignition switch itself. Sometimes there's a LOT run directly off the ignition switch without relays that can cause issues. First hand experience with THAT!

Took the boat out with the new goodies and it ran great especially with the new carb. My problem is the Holley electric fuel pump was running fine then when running across the lake it just dies and the fuel pump shuts off. I turned the ignition back on and nothing from the fuel pump. So I waited a few minutes and tried again and fired right up. about five minutes later the same thing, let it sit and then it will come back on after cycling the key a couple times. Could it just be getting hot, it is hot to the touch not enough to burn you though. It is bolted on the stringer next to the motor mount, could it be too close to a heat source and just shutting itself off. The pump is new and a new filter and all new lines.

One other question...I just realized my transom housing on my jet that was installed here locally hangs below the bottom of the hull about 3/4" on each corner on the bottom. That has to be creating alot of drag and affecting my top end especially.  Not sure how much it would increase if I fix it but could I just cut off the excess and smooth it out to match the line of the hull?

First, you really shouldn't be running a "Red" on a boat. BUT, that being said, is it running through a relay that may be failing? Possibly the ignition switch itself? COULD be a bad pump. Everything else OK on the engine? I mean Oil Pressure, etc? Not uncommon to see them wired through an oil pressure switch. I'd be leaning towards it being wired through a relay that's going bad, or as you suggested, I doubt the thermal inside it is cutting out, Mine is mounted on the fuel pump blockoff and never had an issue with it.

On the  Transom adaptor, yeah, cut it off. Personally, I'd mark it and remove it then do it, but if you have a steady hand, have at it. The transom adaptor is really only even there to keep water out of the boat. There's really nothing structural about it.  ;)

Ashley or Courtney Force  ;D

LOL! X2!!! Not too far off on the Danica one either........ :sly:

Met Kenny Bernstein years ago. Friend of mines dad built/repaired his F/C chassis for him in Seneca Pa. Mike Kachek. Helluva nice guy! But probably the one I'd like to have met and spent some time with would have to be Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins.  My uncle knows him. He built engines for my uncle back when he was racing a Studebaker, then later a '65 GTO and then a 68 Corvette.

Guys like what, in his 80's anyway, but invented Pro-Stock drag racing in general, even built winning Nascar Grand National engines, Sprint cars, you name it, he did it. Far more famous as a driver! Still holds a record for number of consecutive runs without a missed shift, I beleive.......

she can get you on the lease, as thats a written contract between you and her with all the terms and yadda yadda.  you cant just stop payment and leave.  most leases have a clause where it says what happens if the lease is broken.  most of the time its like a first and last months rent.  check your local laws and read your lease paper carefully.

http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/landlordbook/index.shtml

http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/landlordbook/moving-out.shtml

as far as the other junk, you dont owe anything unless its described in the lease.

Not necessarily. There is probably nothing in the lease abiout RV's or boat parking or whatever, Save the Voicemail and anything else you have pertaining to this Brad. Hopefully you still have some receipts and shit for what you DID do for her there. The thread, I remember and can be used as well. As I remember, your place had enough storage out back for not only your junk, but mine and Ron's as well!  But you have no HOA and nothing in the lease, probably, about storage of ANYTHING, as long as the place doesn't look , well, "trashy" for lack of a better term. Probably stated more like "Lessee agrees to general upkeep, maintenance and general appearance of said property" or something similar.

A good, solid, I would say concrete, arguement can be made that "if I wasn't allowed to park an RV there, then why the RV hookups and RV dump facilities ?"  Be the same as renting a house with a Pool and then being charged, a year later for use of the Pool.  :screwy:

Hearing the arguement, as stated, if she goes after you for the money and tries to ding your credit, I doubt there's a judge in the land that would side with her. If she DOES ding your credit, there's counter suit material.

Just my .02, but sounds like the VC needs some quick cash. I'd also get with the tow company to see if you can get any documentation about her trying to have it towed to her place, if you don't have it already. THAT is just setting off all sorts of bells and whistles. Make sure your shit is locked up tight, boats have substantial hitch locks, etc. I don't think Charlie is done with you yet.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: holley 4160 600 stumped!!!!!!!!
« on: July 03, 2011, 04:32:00 PM »
yep set the float level first thing! power valve was brand new. going to check it out anyway. needle and seat were too. walked thur the whole carb before i put it on. which is why i thought it maybe fuel pressure?

Could be fuel pressure, maybe. You've narrowed it down quite a bit, actually, but to be honest, too much fuel pressure would probably lead to uncontrollable float levels. So I seriously doubt that's it.

I'd be pulling the primary fuel bowl and metering block and checking the metering block and main housing for straightness with a machinist's block or rule at least, then checking for gasket failure, etc. Sounds to me like fuel is getting into the air bleeds or idle circuits, now that we know it's the primary's. Hopefully the secondary side is all ok.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: holley 4160 600 stumped!!!!!!!!
« on: July 02, 2011, 11:51:47 PM »

Actually, not so much on a 4160. It just has no secondary accelerator pumps and the vacuum control merely allows the throttle mechanism to engage the secondary throttle plate when conditions are "right" . There is NO secondary metering plate, per se, on a 4160, as the 4150 has. Totally different animal to tune. But YES, Correct on Vacuum drawing the fuel, but so is  the 4150. So many HATE the 4160 and declare the 4150 the "way to go" it drives me crazy.

Post some pics of what you have. I kinda had this on Pickle when I first bought it. Turns out, the, well, whats a good polite word for "jackass"?.........anyway, mounted a screw into the mechanism to make it act like a "mechanical secondary"  Seen this mod on the net as well. Not a good idea.

4150's have their place. 4160's do as well. Sounds to me, and just thinking out loud from reading this a few times, That it is either a carb linkage problem, as Electrowoman pointed out, not allowing the carb to return to "idle"  or "reset" state, OR a needle seat problem. Not much else can cause secondary problems on a 4160, short of warped bowls, throttle plates, vacuum leaks, etc. The normal crap we deal with on any of the Holley's.

Please get this, that BOTH the 4150 (Double Pumper) and the 4160 HAVE primary accelerator pumps. What they do is when the throttle is Mashed, off or near idle, or "hit aggressiveley" is dump a bunch of fuel in nearly immediately. The 4150 has the ability to do this even on the mechanically operated secondaries (Meaning it CAN do both at the same time, if necessary). The 4160 does not have this ability. The metering blocks on a 4150 are there to SPECIFICALLY measure and meter fuel on both ends of the carb. Not all four corners, that's what a Dominator does. Why the 4150 requires a LOT of plug reading, and tuning.

4160 works on a VERY different principle. Secondarys can ONLY open, controlled by the diaphragm and spring, when vacuum is where you want it. The butterflys will then open relative to throttle position, BUT fuel will only be introduced as vacuum says it's necessary, based on the spring used on the secondaries (Hopefully set up after a few plug readings), the jets used,  and vacuum available.

Understand that under a mashed and held full throttle, a 4150 acts the exact same way as a 4160 after the first few seconds. Fuel will NOT be pulled from either bowl unless vacuum exists to suck it out. The accelerator pumps only exist for increasing throttle position changes. No matter how quickly. Yes, the 4150 shines from idle to balls out, because it has two, can open the secondaries imeediately, and...........IF the engine vacuum supports it.........suck the fuel from both bowls. The Dominator does the same thing, but on all four corners being able to be tuned independantly.

Long way around your problem, but you got something leaking from the carb Needle/seat area is where I'd be looking on the secondary side. Could be warped bowl, warped or bent main housing. Could actually just be an old Nitrophyl float so soaked it never actually floats and holds the needle open all the time.

Jet Pumps / Re: My TRIM A JUST MOTOR is dead

You can use either drivers or passenger side, just need to reverse a couple of wires... ;)

mid 70's GM power window motor..

Very true. But it WILL change the orientation of the motor, I think, so if there are any clearance issues, just be aware.

Jet Pumps / Re: My TRIM A JUST MOTOR is dead
« on: July 02, 2011, 10:37:22 PM »
I heard somwhere that the motor is a power window motor from the passenger side of a 75 Cadillac DeVille. Not sure if this is true?, but if it is, I would think that one would be availible at NAPA, or AUTOZONE, ETC.ETC. Mine is out of the boat, and when connected to a 12 volt source, it just makes a buzzzing sound, so I am pretty sure it it dead. The gearcase spins freely. The brushes, and armature of the motor itself look fine, but for some reason it will  not turn. There are none on ebay right now. If anybody has a fix for this let me know! Its 4th of July weekend, and my boat is down as of 9:30 Saturday night!

Yeah, it sounds right. '75 Deville used the same power window motor as a '75 Malibu, Chevette, Vega or anything else GM made in the '70's and through, I think, '84.......just so you know.  And no NOT necessarily available at Auto Zone or NAPA. Pretty old there. You're into "classic restoration parts" now for them.

I'd pull the motor, you have a square drive or 8 point socket? Try turning it over manually without the motor. The device could be jammed, or the short cable from the unit shot, a lot of things. Sounds to me like the motor is trying....... ;)

Again, pictures would help.  As it so happens, I have a couple, working, laying around I could be talked out of.  The ones I have though are the ones set up to work with a trim guage.

Jet Pumps / Re: My TRIM A JUST MOTOR is dead
« on: July 02, 2011, 10:24:09 PM »
Where do I get a new motor assembly for a TRIM A JUST settup?  The Berkeley website says it is no longer availible.  I would also consider going to a manual settup, and just getting rid of the TRIM A JUST all together. I don't know if I can do that with my JE pump, but I would if I can. Until then, I "need" a new motor asembly, so any help would be great! Thanks, Rick

Post up a pic of what you have. If it's what I think it is, it's just a power window motor from any 70's early 80's passenger side GM vehicle. That is if it's JUST the motor. I'll get the part number from one of mine in the morning. They're in the shed, it's dark, and I don't wanna right now.......You can look at your motor and it should have a GM part number either cast into the aluminum part or in the plastic cover part.  :sly:

You CAN just switch it to manual. But really depends on what you have. IF you have the JF version of the Jet-O-Vater, not so bad, new longer cable and manual handle will work fine. Cheaper, and easier to rob a power window motor from PIck-a-Part, or even new. Good news is passenger side windows, especially the back ones from like a 4 door, station wagon or Suburban. aren't used that much and should be in pretty good shape.  ;)

Obviously, best solution is a Place Diverter, which are made for the JE/JF pumps, but a WHOLE lot more expensive than fixing what you got. Yeah, they're better, giving better range, more "roost" ability and handle better, but a roughly $650 solution (That is a bargain basement price)
