Engine Mechanical / Electrical / oil pan problem
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:11:59 AM »
i just had the motor rebuilt and put a milodon 10 qt pan on my olds 455. the problem is...... there is a small hole on the top part where the welds come together. looks like a defective pan. :screwy: is there anyway to fix that without pulling the motor and taking the pan baack ??

also when the motor is hot its hard to crank... im thinking the startor is getting to hot and may need a rebuild ??

Didnt even notice. I was adjusting the ball valve off the pump to get more heat in the motor. I wasn't worried about burning myself as I'd rather do that then fall in the green dirty ass water over there. I swear I saw a diaper in there yesterday

Yeah it's odd even. But I thought it didn't start till may first. You can put a boat in anyway but it's usually only for fishing. Any more then ten miles and hour and they bust you. Since the lake is so small they have a good watch. And with a loud boat they follow you. Wasn't worth it so I'm gonna go back today and open her up

congrats on the boat. i have a 73 kona just reuilt from ground up. it has a 455 olds also. any grinding noise from the bottom end is not a good sign. could be bearings. have you checked the compression ? i would start there. good luck

i think i figured it out. i had the gate valve on the wrong side. i need to put the gate valve on the water line going to the basset t and then to the headers right ? the cyclinders filled up with water and got in the oil. good thing it didnt start. i got all the water out but now i gotta suck all the oil out. went and got a small cheapy syphone yesterday but didnt work worth a shit. i gotta see if my buddy that has a mechanic shop will let me borrow his sucker. got oil and filter yesterday just need to get the oil out and hopefully it will fire up. annything else i should do ?? i dont really need to run water to the headers when its on the trailer correct ? it just keeps the headers cool and muffles right

finally got the motor started and went to hook up the water to run it and check timing. hooked the hose up to the water line and it floods the motor  :banghead: :banghead:   no idea why it did that. when running it with the hose before pulling the motor it worked fine. anything different now that i am running stacks and not through the transom ??

its ALIVE!!!!  ;D got it running last night. dont ever count out the simple things cause they just might be the reason. in this case 7 of my plug wires were not seated down all the way on the cap :banghead:. i guess you live and you learn right ? i have a video but wont let me post it on here. saying its too big. no idea how to downsize it. ill try some more later today for you guys.

this is how i covered the transum holes. my dads a plumber so he got these metal pipes covers and we got 1 inch thick aluminum bar drilled and taped it for the screw to screw into, put some silicone all over it and stuck it on. cost about 20 buck for the covers and had a buddy drill and tap the aluminum bar.

i bought the wires already done and ready to go. the cap and rotor are the ones that were on there. the guy thats helping said they both look good.

mobboss : yeah its turning counter clockwise when it cranks.

mash on it : firing order is correct. when re did all that a couple times last night. cranked it til it spit on number one and dropped in the dizzy towards one and nothing. we have spark in the coil and the coil wire to the dizzy cap. then nothing. wheres your shop at ? i heard bad things about the hei dist. my buddy thats helping me said hes had nothing but problems with hei and nothing but good things with the conversions :screwy:

we replaced everything. we also tried looking at the guide to see about what to do if it doesnt start. checked all those and still nothing. the most we got was a burp thats it. we checked it and its getting the full 12 volts. the only thing i can think is the secondary on the distributor isnt sending the signal to the plug wires. were gonna try using another distributor today and see if it starts.

iv heard the hei distributors are junk. they crap out all the time.

well i had the motor re built about a month ago and just got everything back into the boat and ready to go. we re did all the wiring as it looked like a monkey did it the first time. its a miracle that the boat ran at all. anyways we got everything together and went to start it but burned up the resister. 12 volts was going to the distributor but we caught it. bought a pertronix ignitor kit to get rid of the points and put it in last night. still wont start. we have power getting to the coil and into the distributor but no power to the plugs. :screwy: no idea why. :banghead:  we shimed the distribtuor as well but still no luck. anybody have a problem like this ? anybody have any ideas ??? just wanna get it on the water
