Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 454 alternator replacements

Hey guys quick question hopefully i can find a proper replacement.
Alternator took a dump on the boat last season so took it apart to see what i had and replace with a newer better one.
Its off a 1994 hardin marine 454.
Original alternator is Prestolite 8em2002fa
37amp
12vn
Only wires connected are positive output and i noticed it also uses an exciter wire.
Which is what is confusing me everything new i can find has more amperage but cant find any with an exciter wire terminal.
Most say single wire alternator. Is the exciter wire needed or can it be bypassed or not used with the newer self exciting alternators?
Just looking for a suggested replacement hopefully that will work.
