Thanks guys for all the help, and Chrisx2...sory to hear of your issues at the moment.  Take care of the family first! 

1. I am going to check all my lines this weekend for any plugging or debris.
2.  If al lines good....I am ditching the t-stat, and going with Mondello's reducing washer in place of t-stat.  Hopefully that will slow down the water enough to allow it to cool the block.
3.  I am installing an (on the way from e-bay) wter pressure guage 7 adjust my reduce valve to get 10-12 lbs with reducing washer in place of t-stat.
4. If all that suceeds in my hot idle cure.....I am going to remove the stock water pump this upcoming winter, and install a blocking plate and go with that & either a reduce washer or 160 t-stat next summer.

My setup is ancient.  It is basically the 73 Carlson factory setup. I have attached some pics & a factory diagram. I have a pressure reducing valve ordered from Berkeley to put in the supply line at the gate valve. Hope the pics help all understand it. Its really the factory setup.
 
As to sand in the block....I must admit as a nearly 40+ year boater, that's a new on me, but I've seen it mentioned in several forums. This boat has always been in western NC. Around here we have deep inland lakes that average 30 to 60 ft deep. I've never heard of blocks full of sand in this area. Is this something peculiar to jet drives? I've had a sea-doo since 95, and it's not a problem on them around here either, that I know of.

This is one of those mysteries that (according to the previous owner) "never happened to him". According to the previous owner..it ran flawlessly and all I had to do was put it in the water & have fun. Famous last words in the boating world, huh!! In the meantime, I believe I am going sans t-stat this weekend and only run a Mondello reducing washer in place of t-stat to slow the water down in the block for cooling & see what happens.

Thank you guys both for the replies.

1.  On the sand issue, I don't think that's it. I run a deep mountain lake in western NC with an average depth of 40 to 60 ft. Never seen that be an issue in this area on any type of boats. (unless it's peculiar only to jet drives, and I've had sea-doos since 95, and never seen it an issue with them on this lake either)

2.  I have a CP pressure reduce valve in front of the gate valve at inlet.  It is supposedly "preset" to 10-12 lbs.  I do not have a water pressure gauge (yet)....one is on the way via ebay this week.

3. With the pressure reduce valve, I run the gate valve wide open.  When running in the lake, the reduce valve 'spits' a little water out of the discharge line....but very very little.

4.  With a water hose, I usually turn the gate valve only 1 round open.

Hope that give you a little to go on.  Thanks much for the quick responses!  I'm trying to get her sorted out before Mem. day weekend.

Hello all,

I am not in SOCAL (wish I was), but am still hoping for some west coast help on the east coast.  I have a (new to me) 73 CV-19 Glastron Carlson. I am a newbie on jets, although I've been around stern drives & outboards for half of my 52 years ....but this jet drive is a new animal to me.
 
This boat will idle all day on the trailer with a water hose connected at 160*. But when I put her in the water, and engage the jet drive at idle, it will peg the temp gauge at 220 after travelling maybe 200-300 yards at no wake speed to get out of the marina. When I get it up to 3000 to 3500 RPM's it will drop back to 180*. But if I idle it down to no wake speed to approach a dock....the temp hand pegs again FAST! It also puffs considerable steam (white smoke) out of the exhaust discharges when it's this hot approaching a dock.

 I have checked the compression twice, and it only varies by 20 lbs from hi to low (165 to 185lbs on Olds 455 with 425 "B" heads). I am running a CP Performance 180* marine t-stat. For the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, I am considering backing down to a CP 160* t-stat --or-- removing the t-stat and just running a Mondello reducing washer. I have had 3 new marine t-stats in her. I have replaced the water temp sending unit, and had 2 known good water temp gauges in her....all with the same result.

The Berkeley jet drive was rebuilt last year by the previous owner, so I don't think (hope) it's a water flow problem. This one has be stumped! Does it sound like a possible bad water pump on the engine? (it still uses the stock Olds engine water pump) But I don't see how...as it runs cool on a garden hose. I would think if it was a bad water pump, she'd run hot all the time. It's very much acting like a faulty or stuck t-stat. But what are the odds of 3 bad t-stats in a row?!! I'm also wondering if it's maybe a water flow issue <?> Any help on this will be VERY much appreciated!!  It really has me baffled!
