Saw this boat at the swap meet this last weekend, it's not really what I'm looking for, but wanted to see your guys input
The floor was soft in the back, and the carpet is cheesy home depot special.
It has a stock 460 (wish it was a 454)
Newish interior
And it looks like it's been clearcoated, the clearcoat was peeling.*looks like the boat is gel coated*

This topic is about a month old, but I feel I can contribute. Those are just standard AN/JIC fittings, any Big automotive warehouse carries them also (summit/speedway/jegs)
The nut should say if its a 4/5/6 an, I cant tell you that, but I can link speedway. You will need a flaring tool though that can flare 37*. They say they are for aluminum, but they work for steel line.

« on: May 22, 2016, 09:59:04 AM »I jumped on here to throw this out: just put my 455 back together and she won't fire. I'm not sure if I messed up but should the valves be lashed? I don't know squat about these motors so I need some guidance.
Depends on the cam, is it solid or hydraulic? Solid cams require setting lash, hydraulic cams require preload to set the plunger. Around 1/2 to 1 turn depending who you ask. I go 1/2 turn. And did you get the firing order right lol.

Round trip cost me about $800 in gas. But it was worth it. Got to go to the needles and havasu. Its gorgeous there. Well worth it!! Heres a pic of what i picked up. Original interior and original gel from 78Yea, your not TO far from me, I'm 3 hrs from KC. There's a few floats down by you I've looked at, but nothing trips my trigger.
And yea, if I got a turn key boat out there I could run it on a few of the local lakes befor dragging it 1000s of miles home. I know MO is different from NE, but how hard was it to get your boat titled in a different state?

There is a big inventory out here compared to your area.
Check out the IE craigslist boats section search "jet boat". A lot of potential for a starter boat.

Let's say you find a good hull with pump for $1500. But now it needs upholstery, engine, new cables (throttle, steering, shifter, diverter), new gauges, some wiring and a few performance up grades.
Upholstery $1500-$3000 depending on condition of wood and if you get the good guy discount.
Engine $2500-$3500 to overhaul existing core with minimal machine work and assembling it yourself.
Cables $200-$300
Gauges $150-$500
wiring $100-$500
Performance upgrades (intake, carb, scoop, ignition, headers, nitrous, roller cam & rockers, valvetrain, custom machine work...) $500-$30,000
Don't pass up looking at running boats because of cost. If you find a good hull to build, but have to purchase or overhaul most everything you will spend more than it'll cost you to start with a runner.
That $6000 runner isn't looking so expensive now, is it?
Yea, stuff adds up pretty quick, cars are the same way lol. Yea, a 6k boat doesn't look that bad after you add everything up. Most of that I could do myself (upholstery, wiring, machining). But I completely see your point.

I think a good question to start with would be. What kind of boating are you looking to do? Family fun or building a runner? Because then there are going to be different answers for different applications.
I'd say some good starter boats that you can put some power to would be, Eliminator, Bahner, Rogers, Miller and Southwinds. I'd look for boats with full stringers. I'm sure there are going to be plenty of other options people are going to add for you, but these hulls are usually pretty decently priced and are good all around hulls.
As far as pumps Jacuzzi's can be built, but in my opinion your going to want to look for hulls with either Berkeley (JC or JG) or Dominator.
This may be crazy, but I looked for a boat for 5 years before jumping on my Bahner. I got exactly what I wanted for my patience. What I mean is be picky about what your buying. And for what it's worth I'd pass on the Tahiti that's been sitting in the weather for the last 18 years. Good luck with the search.

Here where it snows and freezes, that boat has had LOTS of water in it, and lots of ice in the winter. The engine is locked up, and honestly, the pump probly is also.
Around here is mainly smaller lakes, with the occasional river. I want a runner, but I might also pull an occasional tube around the lake.
Welcome to SCJB
Even if you're planning on building your own engine, I'd still recommend buying a complete boat with engine (runner if possible) so you get all the accessories that will kill a budget quickly (alternator, starter, distributor, mounts, headers and the list will keep going).
Specific brands won't matter as much as how it was treated over the last 30-40 years. Look at the stringers and transom wood for rot or delamination of the fiberglass covering those pieces.

I completely understand where you are coming from as far as the accessories, especially if your not much of a mechanics guy. I have LOTS of engine related parts for cars/trucks, and most of that stuff changes over to boats, with the exception of the mounts/headers.
I was mainly looking at just a floater, because that means the boat is cheaper.

I've been floating around on here for about a year and a half now, mainly watching the classifieds, but occasionally looking thru the forum. never bothered to make an account until now.
Recently got out of college, and now with more free time, I feel its finally the time to pull the trigger on getting a boat.
I have a good idea what I'm looking for as far as hull design/shape, but not sure as far as brands go, There's a Tahiti in town locally, but it has sat outside for as long as I can remember, lets say the better part of 18 years. And he's asking entirely to much for it, But are Tahiti's a good beginner hull, or what brands would be a good mold for the entry level boater. * The picture is the general design I like*
A few things I've learned to look for:
*Warped hull from setting on the trailer to long
*1/4,1/2, or full stringer
*Stringer condition
*Floor condition
*Drive condition
*Glass condition(hull, not windshield)
Are there other obvious things I'm missing?
I didn't list engine related stuff because that's my hobby, so I plan to just build my own setup, and buy a boat without one.
What about drives? The 2 most common I see are Jacuzzi, and Berkley. Is one stronger than the other, and where can I read about the older drives power limits?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
