Ran a Race Kart engine business and team for 15 years, worked for a Nascar team for 3 years, and now back to running a kart team.  Gives me lots of lake time.   :)

The torque steer on an Outboard and I/O turns the boat to the left.  The Driver is on the right to help counteract that.  The torque steer on a V-drive turns the boat to the right so the driver is on the left.  Anyone who has driven a hydro or flat with big power knows how much left steering you put in on a hard launch.  Early jets were built by the same custom builders of v-drives so they simply put the driver on the left like a v-drive even though there's no torque steer.

That's how it was explained to me as a young pup in the 60's.  Of course real jets boat have center steering. 8)

Here's a couple for the hydro guys.....Don Yates in Rated X and Dean Willis in Royal Flush.  Royal Flush was fast, but scary on shut down.  Rated X was just scary.

I don't know how many of these they built, but Kurtis made a flatbottom jet back in the mid 70's.  I'm sure some else did too, but this is the only one I remember.

Man, that was a long time ago.  I know that Bill and Frank had a falling out.  I think they were together in the Southwest Paving Spcl. days, but split when Bill ran Going Places.  Frank did run a Mach1 and I think the bottom was the same as a Mod'ed up Southwind or original Placecraft.  I'm not sure though.  Those days were cool in BFJ because there were so many different designs-good and bad.

Actually it wasn't the Place Brothers and they built their own mold.  Frank Place didn't have anything to do with Placecraft, just Bill Place.  They started with a Southwind, but they did more than chop off the pod and change the deck.  They also dropped the sponsons which was being done on any serious go fast Southwind.  Without the dropped sponsons, it teetered side to side during a pass.  We we looking for a hull to replace our Hondo Pantera so Southwind hooked us up with one of the old Going Places tunnels-Bill had already started Placecraft.  Bill  later gave us a Placecraft.  You can see the sponson additions on the pic of the Southwind.

I'm ashamed to say it was a 76 Hondo flatbottom with a 396.  It was cheap.

I would think that even the worst tunnel is better than one of the old jet hydros.
I don't recall seeing a Hondo jet hydro run, but I watched Dean Willis (who developed the Sanger jet hydro) pretty much almost crash it every time he shut down.  Granted, it was faster than most of the BFJ v-bottoms at the time, but it was just plain scary.  When he shut it down it just bucked, bouncing from the sponsons the to tail very violently.  Rated X ran one also, a v-bottom grafted onto a Howard hydro.  It was never even fast.  As soon as the Southwind tunnel came out, the  jet hydro experiments pretty much disappeared. 

God, I'm old.  :(

I'm new on the site, but I figured I would throw in my practical 2 cents.  I have been a jet boat guy for almost 40 years from BFJ's in the 70's and 80's to building my own tunnel.  And just about the time I think I have these buggers figured out I find out I don't.  The only thing I figured out is to test, test, test.

I have a 21' Carrera with a set back pump, loader, shoe, ride plate, droop, and PD.  It runs just under 60mph with just me in the boat and rides awsome over 40, but porpoises under 40 even with the PD.  Thats fine at the river, you just go faster than 40.  However, the lake I live at now gets very choppy in the main channel on weekends so I spend a fair abount of time cruising at 30.  So I figured I would bite the bullet and give up some top speed to fix the porpoise and put on a straight snoot.  So go figure, it took care of the low speed porpoise and topped out at 62 with me and my wife in the boat! :screwy:

So all I can say is test, test, test.
