NICE lol.. I was gonna run a bigger pan but after setting the block back in there and doing some measuring I would have to change my motor mount set up. Dont really want to do that. I may sell the boat next summer and look for a fork or a tx19 something a  little more loud and proud lol.

ok , lets start with the first question. can you run to much oil?   that answer is dont do it. its better to run less than more. those lines on a dipstick. have full then slashes then 1qt down some have 2qt down. anywhere in the run range is fine . the full mark is basically dont go over or else! putting to much in is asking for all of your seals to fail. in your oil pan while its running there is a pressure with more oil than what is recommended that pressure will push the oil out an place it can!!! seals first then gaskets. also when your crank comes in contact with a bath of oil not only will it froth it , it also loses power. most oil pan manufactures will set you up with the right dip stick or help with the right length.

I dont need a new dip stick, all I have to do is put in the right amount of oil and wait for it to drain into the pan, then pull the dipstick & center punch it for full. On the dip stick it said safe and when it was in the pan it was like an inch and a half off of the bottom of the pan at best. I will either run 5 or 6 qts I think it will be ok. Thanks for all the input.

I haven't run the Rotella but I do run the Chevron Delo 400 15w40 (Both good quality diesel oils that I believe still contain zinc).

zinc :thumbup: thats why I was asking, I think this would be much better on an old school motor.

when i set my dipstick level i used the low side of the main caps as a reference for the "full" mark.  this put some of the crank in oil when it wasnt running, but once running and fluid was pumped thru the heads should be lower than the crank to prevent wicking it in the oil and creating a big frothy oily mess. 

curious what the experts say for oil levels... hopefully i did mine right.

I measured it at 6qts, i filled it with 6 and it had just started to crest over the shallowist part of the pan, I figured that the crank will not touch it there because if it did it would also be hitting the pan, as far as it sloshing, I think that sixth quart will be pulled into the oil filter & gallies as well so it should pull it far enough down that I should be safe. Im glad I found this issue  ;D


Oh yeah...One more question. Anyone ever run rotella 15 - 40 in their motor?

Found out why I spun 2 rod bearings.

I was messing with my stock pan this weekend  & was trying to find out how many quarts my pan should hold. I picked up the timing chain cover and set it on the front of the pan so I could see where the full mark on my dip stick was located, when I got to looking I noticed that I couldnt see it at all. Turns out it was way down in the pan. Long story / short ...the dip stick was too long (I bought the boat this way). It turns out I was only running about 2.5 - 3qts in the motor and it was showing full on the dip stick. It showed no oil pressure on the gauge but I just thought the sending unit was bad since the dip stick would show full.  :banghead:

Note to anyone buying a used boat, drain all the oil first & then fill it back up with how ever many qts you were told it uses & then check to see where it is on the dip stick. :mad: :screwy:
 
I also have a question (as I do at least once a week)

If I have a 5qt pan I should be able to run 6qts in it right, that would  leave about 1qt for the filter & 5ish quarts for the pan. Any agrees or disagrees on this?

5 quarts of oil will get HOT in a hurry at WOT.  I'd watch my temp climb and pressure drop with a 12qt pan on a 500ish hp BBC....in less than 8 miles...oil pressure was....well, not good.  Run a good oil like Total
Quartz racing 15/50 that can handle temps, at the very least.  Group 3 base stocks can't hang.

Good info thanks guys. Well im gonna assume thats what happened to me then, I ran it hard (Wide "F" Open---WFO) for a good 5-10 mins and the oil got hot and cooked the rod bearings.

So, invest in a accusump? Or invest in a oil temp gauge so my retarded a$$ doesnt do this again?  :banghead:

Also anyone know if a canton marine pan 7.75" deep will clear a stock motor mount setup with the cross member? & if not I am going to find out this weekend anyway, im gonna drop the bare block in w/the bell housing and measure, if it does not clear I am thinking of building my own crossmember to clear the pan & cutting out the stock one? Has anyone done this before or am I just that redneck lol...

The internal combustion automobile engine does use heat to some extent and which helps the engine make power and also the engine will last longer (reduced wear) if the operating temperature is higher than lake water temp.  With a wide open gate valve, most boats typically run at 120*-130* F.  If you start turning the gate toward the closed position you will eventually begin to see a water temperature rise in your engine (usually less than 1-1/2 turns open from fully closed).

You will get varying opinions on a good water temp for a jet boat; I like to run my engine at about 160" as controlled by the gate valve (no thermostat) while running hard. Then, upon entering a 5 mph zone the temp might spike to 190* (because water flow has decreased with decreassed rpm) and then it will settle back down to 170 or so. So I don't go any higher than 160* while running across the lake because I don't want to "steam" (boil the cooling water in the engine) when I enter the 5 mph zone.

The Kaase pump is a standard volume pump. Based on the way you run your jet boat ("wide open for 5-10 mins at a time"), I would strongly recommend adding an HV pump when you install the jet boat pan. (I almost always recommend HV pumps for 460 powered jet boats.) There's probably no need to mess with your engine program now if it's working for the time being...but do keep an eye on your oil pressure gauge.

larger pan is *always* better.  a million dollar high pressure or high volume pump isnt gonna do crap when theres no oil in the pan.

So whats your suggestion to me keeping a stock pan? They came stock with them you would think they are kind of ok. I just dont have the time to change my motor mount system in order to get a larger pan in there. I guess I could use my father in laws boat for the weekend (stupid fishing boats)& address this issue after the holiday.

$10 gate valve from local hardware store here. HD didn't have any for 3/8 or 1/2.

Ball valve is more on/off. Gates are what you want for flow control.

Im still new at the jet boat thing as well. What happens if you leave the gate open and it runs lake temp water in it the whole time? Is that a bad thing or does the engine just perform better with a little heat??? :screwy:

I know I either asked this before, or I have seen this on here before (ive slept since then). On a motor that will turn 4500rpms what type of oil pump should I use?

A. Stock or
B. High vol

I run the hell out of my boat (like wide open for 5-10 mins at a time, is this bad?)& only have a 5qt pan (or at least thats what im guessing) it is a stock BBF pan, Im not sure if staying on it constantly will pull all the oil from the pan (until its starving for oil), anyones $.02 would help. Something else I pondered on was getting a KAASE oil pump because they are alot more durable but I am unsure if he makes a standard volume pump or not.

Anyhow any info would help, trying to get it back together by memorial day weekend. Thanks- the.perv

Worse case...The bearing clearence maybe to tight, when they heat up they expand, if they are to tight they have no where to go. Just my guess...

Does it ever die after you have been running it for a while? Maybe pickup in the distributor.???

P.S. I hope im wrong, but this did happen to me. I bought the boat that way. Now im rebuilding the motor...& when I pulled it apart it seemed to be a fresh rebuild.

  Thanks.  Is there anything I need to disconnect at the drive/pump connection?  I think this is pretty straight forward.  I just want to fix the oil leak and freeze plugs with out messing anything up or having to do major adjustments after reinstall.

Just the tail end of the bell housing, the drive shaft yolk should slide out as you ease the motor forward.

Now that its months later I have pulled the bbf460 out & found that it is .040 over (468ci) & I killed two rod bearings (1 & 5). I do not know why, the oil pump was in good shape as well as the oil pump drive shaft. I am looking at a 521 stroker kit & since its .040 over it will be about 524ci. I have read alot on here & understand that my hopes of 70ish were probly high (due to weight of hull) but I can settle for 60ish MPH. So I will try to keep you all informed as the build starts.

P.S. Any thoughts on roller cams & roller rockers (does this make motor more durable)??? & since its a JE pump should I change out the impeller to stainless steel?

I have through the transome log exhaust, the headers are aluminum. Do they have, to have water running through them? I'm guessin they do, but im not for sure.

Next question... Do the log headers have something built into them to keep the water from sucking back into the heads? I mean it would suck water back in if the over lap was just right wouldn't it???

perv, you have a fine cruiser and i would tend to keep it that way. you can build a 500hp engine that is very reliable and still run the log exhaust. if you want to go fast find a different hull jmho...

Thanks Ralph, hey I was looking at some pics of your boat, it looks very very similar to mine, Is a nordic and spectra similar hulls?

If you really believe all that , you are just lying to your self cause you have one! There is a reason why they stopped making them a loooong time ago! And a reason why you will never see one at any race , circle or drag!

Sweet I started a riot lol j/k... I dont have a need to drag race my boat, I guess I just want to have a little somethin in case I felt like going fast, thats all... Ill just rebuild what I got, freshen up the old motor and call it good. Its still fun and shoots good roosts.

Spectra hulls are typically very well built but heavy hulls, you may want to lower your expectations a wee bit...

A heavy hull, coupled with a somewhat inferior performing pump package and I think you are going to be floating in Disappointment Bay....

To get these pumps to work takes quite a lot of thought. Being an "insert" type intake, the ramp is both short and steep, this really limits the performance expectation reality.

It can and has been done, but I think it would be more realistic to shoot for a 65 MPH family cruiser and use the money you saved to find a "Hot Rod". Realistically you would probably need to be in the neighborhood of in excess of 750 HP and have made numerous changes to both the hull and the pump to achieve the mid 70's with what you have to work with thus far. Whereas a different hull and pump package could do it with less than 600 ponies....Food for thought. :thumbup:

Hey no biggie, thats why im on here lol, to look & learn.
Maybe it would be best if I rebuilt the pump I have & gave the old 460 some spruceing up and just make it reliable. Im not to worried about it, at least if it runs we can enjoy the lake (in a low murmering voice...& maybe sell it and buy a eliminator or youngblood fork lol...

It is a 77' Spectra 18', It has a mini day cruiser look to it. Ill try to get some pics. I would say it's a hog compared to a sanger or witchcraft that sits out of the water 6 inches. But its paid for lol...& its pretty clean for a 77'

Before I broke it I would guess it ran about 55-57ish @4500, thats the max it would turn

By the way, what pump is a good pump? Other then the JR???@6k
Can I do anything with this pump? Or is it a paper weight?

you can get a dished piston to keep the c/r  down with the 72cc chambers that most aftermarket alum heads come with. the pro-comp is available in 72 and 95 cc combustion chambers as well as the edelbrock heads ( both standard valve layout). both flow less than the other heads i stated before... they make off the shelf pistons for the stroker kits for the p-51 and newer scj a or b heads. ( both have non stock valve layout)

there are many options for the bbf, do your research befor buying your parts.

Let me ask you, if it were your boat with a 460 that needed rebuilt, what would you build in order to run 70ish & be as reliable as possible, oh & run off pump gas???(c.i., carb, cam, heads etc) Oh and I gotta keep the logs, I have 2 small kids, the old lady wouldnt like dry stacks lol...

So Tim, what kind of flow are we talking about here on the Ford heads & on the pro-comp heads??? Are the pro-comps aluminum? Also cumbustion chamber sizes? How much for a finished set of the pro-comps???

-Like I asked before, what will it take to make a boat do 70ish-12345, do I even need to get huge displacement, or can it be done an easyer/little cheaper way???(if not I understand)

-Also I havnt asked this yet, is it possible to have a boat that fast (70ish)running off a 750dble pumper? If not how big?(sorry all I know is fuel infection systems/nothing about carbs)
