A close relative had a real lousy experience with those guys! $13k for a 14.5:1 540 and it spun the main and rod bearings right out of the box. It ran on the water for about 15 minutes and it lost oil pressure. We never even got on it. On teardown, we found that the rear main bearing installed was the wrong bearing, the oil hole in the bearing shell only slightly aligned with the oil hole in the bore. It wiped out the crank and required an align bore. After several calls and being told we installed the engine incorrectly(we dropped the engine in complete minus oil pan and the intake, right out of their shipping box!), they told us it wasn't their problem. We couldn't even get a gasket set out of them!!!

Beware of those guys!

From what I've read . 2sav is right on about the oiling mods . That is really the achillies heal of the olds . Other wise a very good motor also . I'd rebuild it as cheap as you can (do it right of course) along with the proper oiling mods and it should be very reliable for a long time . The aftermarket is not very kind to the olds as far as price goes , which is why lots of folks dont step up an olds . They are most 70's boats for a reason . Just cover all your bases .

Im getting ready to do a rebuild on my 455 olds. Depending on what the machine shop say's its al'ready.30 over and i wanna stay right there if i can. Gonna grind the crank and add a nice cam, i might go rollers but not sure right at the moment. Thats about it. Why get crazy on building a 455 when its still a 455? Now on my 454 project im gonna go nutz or should i say bankrupt   good luck, i will follow this maybe i will get some ideas here too
 Oh ya i forgot to add , installing restricters too. Its a must.
